Does science impact the world in a positive way?

What is the benefit of a scientific discovery? The only benefit I can think of is that a scientific discovery can have applications that make society wealthier. But it seems like society is already too wealthy, so what good is a scientific discovery?

Life is evolutionary competition. Science gives one an advantage in this competition. And morality enables science. When morality fails then science fails as we see in the recent covid response. Moral societies should use science to their advantage.
