The difference between the Northeast and the South is that "the system" is significantly worse in the northeast than the south. A consequence of this is that people in the South are generally loyal to the "the system", show respect to "the system", follow all the rules, and get upset at people who don't follow them. But in the Northeast, the system is so bad that there is a significant portion of the population that reacts by circumventing it. Black markets are ubiquitous in the northeast, and you hear people talk about how they bought something such as a fake vehicle inspection sticker or a fake vaccine card from the black market. But in the South only weirdos do illegal things. So ironically, I think the next generation of "rebels" might come from the Northeast, which also happens to be where Trump is from.
