Had a hard time seeing the rainbow flag because I had never noticed that the Azov patch also has the black sun in the backdrop. They did a ‘rebrand’ a few years ago and supposedly ‘retired’ that old patch. Because that fixes everything. Wait, it wasn't a few years ago, it was in May 2022. And only because Russian propaganda was “exploiting” the old logo.

Zelensky is a puppet with no real power. He doesn't have any control whatsoever over these militias and they literally threatened to overthrow him like Yanukovich if tried to force them to respect the Minsky Accords. The Azov Battalion hasn't existed since late 2014.

There is an Azov regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine. The regiment has no political affiliation and has recently abandoned the insignia of the Azov battalion, including the black sun and the thing that was claimed to be a stylised "NI" but that looked an awful lot like a wolfsangel in mirror.

I'm sure the similarity is neither accidental nor unrelated to why they don't use it now.

However, Azov always claimed that it represents the “idea of the nation,” and which unites the letters “I” and “N” in old cyrillic script. And the cross-piece of a wolfsangel is very short, because it's not functional, just where the chain used to be attached. Whereas in the "NI" of the old Azov Battalion, it's longer than the hooks.

The cross-piece of a wolfsangel is very shorter than the books, whereas in the "NI" of the old Azov Battalion, it's longer than the hooks. The N shape on the wolfsangel is in mirror compared to the NI of azov, and the corners aren't the same height as the stems of an N.

The black sun is, as far as I'm aware, unambiguous. When it was a militia, the Azov battalion was headed by white supremacists, and some of the people who joined shared that ideology.

But since being absorbed into the national guard of ukraine, they have new leadership, and no political affiliation. Hence the abandoning of Nazi-symbols.

Regardless of their ideology or lack of, they have been known for acts of torture, murder of POWs and civilians, coating bullets in pig fat to kill Muslims, desecrating corpses, and many other barbaric actions. And the Zelensky decided to trade them, instead of the 20 year old conscripts who are still stuck in Russian prisons. Both countries are despicable shitholes with no respect for human life.
