What changes for the average user? I can't say I've ever port forwarded a VPN, and I can only recall doing it at all a handful of times back in the day when online gaming was difficult.

I'm not really too well versed on VPNs, but my experience with gaming and such leads me to believe that this would only be an issue if you wanted to host a server of some kind through the VPN. Their explanation of why they're discontinuing it seem to support that as well.
If you're just using it to browse the web and such it shouldn't matter.
