Google Analytics alternative?

Does anyone know of a Google Analytics alternative that doesn't suck? I need cross session user tracking, which means cookies. I need dimensions, metrics, and calculated metrics. I need to be able to record data from my server using an API. Is this too much to ask? In today's idiocracy, it probably is too much to ask.

Mixpanel looks promising. Matomo looks like a mess.

I went with Mixpanel. It is surprisingly good.

There's an open source and private alternative out there, I forget the name
