problem with hydrogen is that it takes 9kw of solar to produce 1kw of hydrogen which then has to be refrigerated for storage consumiug more power

[–]Canbot 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

It does not have to be refrigerated. But you do need a high pressure tank.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It also diffuses trough literally everything if not kept cool enough. Which is a problem because H is highly explosive (in combination with oxygen in surrounding air).

Well ventilated storage area.

In think the stations store it as water and when you go to fill up they use the electricity to separate it there and then.

you think? so you really dont know? omg.

you can make hydrogen at home or standing in a forest, if you have a DC source, water and some baking soda.

It ain't easy, I assure you.

Hydrogen has a rather hard to control combustion. It as well as the ignition timing are extremely dependent on piston geometry and materials.

Engines retrofitted for natural gas (CH4 in a very wide sense) are way easier to use with hydrogen. Especially when they have spark-plugs to control ignition timings better.

We are in the process of refurbishing an all-fuel engine model from Brazil and still scratching our heads often.

Nat gas has the same problems than hydrogen, in a smaller scale and hazard levels. Its still much more dangerous than traditional gasoline.

Id argue even electric is far more dangerous given that an explosion can cause a much bigger fire from the battery's components.

you did not tell us how you came to the conclusion that we are not going to run out of oil for a couple of generations?

even if that were the case, that is a pretty sad situation.

zombeh says that the world will run out of oil in the year _____.

fill in the blank, if you can.

fyi, when we run out of oil and we run out of fresh water, there is no legislation that can fix that problem.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's fairly well accepted that there's about 40-50 years of oil left at our current use based on the known oil fields. A generation is what, 20-30 years? What exactly is wrong with my statement? Or are you just picking a fight? I said there is finite oil on the planet, meaning limited in size or extent, like there is finite water on the planet, are you a retard?

[–]chickenz 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (54 children)

A diesel engine can be ran on cooking oil. The problem is that it requires two gallons of diesel to produce one gallon of cooking oil.

When the oil runs out and the machines stop running... You will have a complete breakdown of everything around the world.

Mass starvation is coming, this is the reason for the fake pandemic and the shutdown/ lockdown.

The oil is running out and so is fresh drinking water.

[–]Canbot 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (51 children)

Fake and gay.

Peak oil propaganda has been more disproven than muh climate change.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (42 children)

The earth clearly has finite resources, to believe that they are unlimited would indeed be foolish. It just won't run out in our lifetime, or for several generations to come, or our consumption will never exceed availability.

[–]Rah 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

There is a theory natural gas and oil are periodically expelled from the Earth's crust, and are still being formed and will always form to this day. Just how much isnt known yet, but it shows how this theory was never explored, given we haven't exhausted major oil fields.

[–]chickenz 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (40 children)

It just won't run out in our lifetime, or for several generations

you do not have the data needed to make such a calculation. Ie, you are guessing..

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (35 children)

Yep. Lots of or's in there. We haven't even mapped the bottom of the ocean, we're hardly going to know every oil reserve on the planet. Nobody has the calculation.

[–]chickenz 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (34 children)

There are clear signs, indications that we know that we are running out of oil.

Not only are we running out of oil, but the oil drilling process produces pollution that are creating irreversible environmental damage.

[–]brimshae 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (33 children)

we know that we are running out of oil.

The 1970s called and asked to leave a message. They want their "muh ten more years until we run out of oil" back.

The 1980s left a message on the micro-cassette answering machine. They want their "muh ten more years until we run out of oil" back.

The 1990s left a message on the digital answering machine. They want their "muh ten more years until we run out of oil" back.

The 2000s left a voice mail. They want their "muh ten more years until we run out of oil" back.

The 2010s posted a grainy Youtube video. They want their "muh ten more years until we run out of oil" back.

Then again, you're too young to remember that in the 1970s we were being told we were all going to freeze to death.

[–]chickenz 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (32 children)

the titanic has hit something, sir.. we are taking on water, sir.. we dont have enough lifeboats, sir. the titanic eventually sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

the rich do not care if they destroy the earth for future generations.

Then why are you buying what they are selling about global warming?

[–]chickenz 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (17 children)

global warming will most likely not have any effect on my life, because my life expectancy is short..

but, the glaciers are melting... the perma-frost in canada is melting.. the bees are losing their internal compasses.. those issues alone could cause catastrophic situations.

people that want to believe that everything is ok, you cant debate them because they will argue until the titanic is sunk.

ok, i am using data from NASA.. they say that the oceans have risen 101.4 millimeters(approx four inches) since 1993..

(*) florida just had one of its worst ever hurricanes with catastrophic flooding.

fyi, florida could easily just disappear from the maps, it could become useless land.

https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/sea-level/

*Key Takeaway: Global sea levels are rising as a result of human-caused global warming, with recent rates being unprecedented over the past 2,500-plus years.

if you want to debate the numbers that are produced by nasa, i have my popcorn ready and waiting.. the microphone is yours.

using the wayback machine, nasa said in 2014 that our oceans are rising by 3.17 millimeters per year.

running out of oil is gay?

everybody gonna be gay then.

there is a fixed amount of oil and we are running out fast.

the oil companies want you to believe that oil will last for ever and ever and ever.

there is a fixed amount of oil in the earth, and the oil companies are going to bullshit you until they have sold every last drop.

the rich dont give a fk about you or your children... the rich only care about their money.

btw, you dont really understand money, do you?

i could explain it to you, but you would only argue.

we are running out of oil, just fyi.

If a seller is going to lie about supply they are going to claim that it is lower so that prices go higher.

[–]Canbot 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

btw, you dont really understand money, do you?

You just said the dumbest thing anyone could ever say about supply and demand and you think I don't understand money. Even as a shill you have to realize how stupid you look right now.

[–]chickenz 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

when children lose debates, they resort to calling names such as stupid, etc..

keep in mind that it is your university that taught you about supply and demand, and that university is now borderline bankrupt. that is just something for you to think about.

running out of oil does not only mean that the price of oil will increase.. it means that the price of EVERYTHING will go up... and when the prices reach a certain level, the economy will go full retard like venezuela did.

also, regarding the worthless nature of your university educations... there is only one reason that we have been listening to biden considering "forgiving" student loans... it is because the students discovered that their university educations were worthless and that they were not able to even pay back their massive student loans..

ie, the economy is crumbling and we are running out of resources and this is why the governments of the world have taken drastic measures in the form of a fake pandemic and a global shut down.

good afternoon.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This is believable. Corporate greed 😐

[–]jet199 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

The thing is there is loads of second hand cooking oil from restaurants which isn't being made just for fuel so doesn't count.

[–]chickenz 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

did you know that there are people that make a small living by acquiring second hand cooking oil and then re-selling that to processing plants?

yup.

i did a bit of reading about this, but i lost interest... the word is that you can simply strain the old grease oil thru a pair of cotton pants or shirt and then pour it into your diesel tank.. the problem arises when in cold weather, the grease solidifies... you gotta put some kind of heating system which keeps the oil from becoming a solid material.

and, vegetable oil is not the big solution because in the process of growing the crop to produce the oil, you need to run tractors, etc, and that requires another fuel, most likely diesel...

basically, our best option is to pretend that we have an endless supply of oil and then just keep riding the titanic as it sinks.

[–]jet199 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

Excellent.

So I can buy my van and convert when they build enough hydrogen stations.

[–]monks 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

it requires electricity to produce the hydrogen and then hydrogen is used to produce electricity, both stages produce a loss of energy... ie, it is a very inefficient way to do things.

it is like the idea to run a diesel engine on vegetable oil... when we bragged to the saudis that we were going to become independent of their oil because we can now run our engines on vegetable oil... they laughed at us, because they know that it takes one to two gallons of oil to produce one gallon of vegetable oil.

we only have one choice now and that is to turn off the combustion engines and start riding donkeys again.

[–]jet199 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

The vast majority of electricity is not produced using hydrogen though. Mostly nowadays it's renewables.

Nothing will ever be perfect but it can get better.

[–]chickenz 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

we are experiencing a steady breakdown of our resources.

hoover dam holds back lake mead, which is almost so low that the hoover dam can no longer generate electricity.. ...and omg we just had an explosion and a fire at the hoover dam, isnt that weird?

lake mead is a major source of water for the surrounding area, including california and arizona, etc.

Hydrogen assisted diesel has been a thing for awhile. Dump trucks and stuff seem to increasingly have them fitted. They generate they hydrogen with fuel cells doing electrolysis from their alternator as they go. They don't use anywhere close to 90%, but anything is significant in the long run.

It works best in diesel due mainly to it being easier to retrofit. Adding the hydrogen assist screws with your timing, which gets funky. I've helped with a couple (poorly done) builds to put small hydrogen assist fuel cells into older carbureted gasoline trucks. It works out pretty easy, you just are limited on how much assist you can give, by how many problems it causes and the vehicle you've chosen's ability to be adjusted/adapted to that.
