In some of the bigger stores in my country (the UK), they have a screen at the entrance that shows the view of the security camera. Recently, I've noticed that more of them now have a green box that tracks someones face whenever it sees it. This however does not show the green box around someones face when that person is wearing a mask. It makes then unrecoognizable.
It's pretty terrifying to think about what the companies will do with the information they scan off of your face, your race, your weight, height etc. and the facial recognition which is probably sent to a government database somewhere. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that the stores in other countries do this secretly without the customers knowledge.
Also growing your hair long will help with the system failing to recognise your face (as long as the hair covers your face) (Thanks lockdown!)
Bonus points for the things such a system can do, it can call the police if you act suspciously, making sure that everyone follows "allowed" behaviours. It can track you when you're moving pretty fast, such as running and eventually driving as the technology progresses. It can pull up a profile of you detailing your name, age, occupation, other "misdemeanors" etc. (I know this because I went to a security expo and this was one of the star attractions, I believe a Canadian company is the biggest player in this market). It sounds like I've watched one too many dystopia sci-fi movies but to be honest I find those boring. I guess because they're 90% based on real life now.
Keep your privacy, wear a mask!
