Campers are missing out if they only experience nice weather. There's a primal excitement to storms, and rain showers lead to beautifully vibrant leaves and rapidly flowing waters that give a little extra oomph to the place. I love the warmth of hot cocoa and a cozy sleeping bag, sheltered from the elements but feeling it all around. Plus the shared suffering strengthening a bond when things go awry.

I remember when I was a kid: my parents took me and my brother camping and I woke up half submerged in water, because it rained all night. We had to go home, because it was starting to flood — and it did flood. Looking back, that probably contributed to my thalassophobia.

You are stronger for it, yes?

Eh, it wasn't a hardship, just a scary event. The worst thing that happened was that I got my clothes wet.

Yeah, the LED vs old lighting thing really hits home. That old shit is so weak and inefficient, and we had crappier batteries back then to top it all off. Modern lighting tech is really amazing.

My phone battery lasted the entire 24hrs too without recharging too. Pixel 5 5G. It has some odd Lithium hybrid battery I think. Charges fast too. Top notch spyware.

Funny enough I don't get 5G normally, but I did driving to some tiny out of the way town.

Next time leave the dog and take the cat. Trust me.

As someone who wants to camp with his cat, why?

[–]TripleZ 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I was being sarcastic. IDK, maybe you could. I've only ever owned barn cats. I wouldn't take one camping with me because they'd probably wander off never to be seen again.

My Gizzie is a pampered indoor cat too, not sure he'd appreciate that or I'd ever see him again. Might get lost.

Yeah, I was kidding. Don't take your cat camping. Cats aren't bonded the way dogs are. He would probably wander off.

Love em both but yep, cats are assholes

Glad you had fun. Sounds like a blast. I was worried it would be miserable because of the cold, but it sounds like everyone had the right mindset (except the dog, haha)

The lake had fish in it too with perch and bass, but catch and release fishing only. Even if we could've caught our dinner though I learned a long time ago not to count on that lol. That's how you go hungry.

It is great to have wholesome family moments. I'm not really a kid person but having a niece is great. We don't have a kid, she doesn't have parents. Works out. We end up doing a lot of fun stuff together. Amusement parks, concerts (pre covid), stuff the wife and I wouldn't pick to do of our own volition.

Bass also doesn’t taste good. Yellow perch on the other hand is pretty good.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I love bass personally.

Breakfast was chili and sausage. Nobody really ate the chili but me but everyone liked the sausage. We didn't pack a ton of food. We forgot a can opener too but that was for the chili. There was enough to eat, but not as much as we probably felt inclined to eat. Except me, I'm not a picky eater. And I did the shopping.

Has anyone ever used a ProBoard BBS? They do have some nice features.

Can't wait to go camping again, been too lazy during the holidays.

I'm also really glad I went because the kids were originally planning on going alone and I don't think they're prepared for that quite yet.

And it didn't occur to me I had never gone camping with the wife. That's another good reason to have gone. The kids joked it was like a honeymoon for us. I told them in that case I hope they brought their earplugs.

You sound homosexual.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 5 fun2 insightful - 4 fun3 insightful - 5 fun -  (2 children)

I've been told I'm 35% homosexual.

[–]mongre 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Is there a margin of error?

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm sure, that's just an estimate.

The second of the three fires was the last log and any dry pine we could find. Everything was pine trees. Smokey as hell but the kids enjoyed setting stuff on fire, as kids often do. We burned paper trash too. Then the owner stopped by with wood and we had one last proper fire. Had to zelle her payment, lol. I didn't think to bring cash.

We bought walkie talkies for the ride up there too since the kids were inexperienced drivers. Also it was fun. I felt like we had a convoy! Saw a dude hauling a jacked up 80's Grand Marquis with a strap to a truck and people leading and following. On the highway. I guess it's cheaper than the proper way of doing that.

[–]mongre 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

You still sound homosexual.
