U.S. gun-related deaths versus alcohol-related deaths

In 2019, there were 78,927 deaths related to alcohol. These include deaths from drunk driving, overdoses, liver disease, and more.

In 2019, there were 39,707 deaths related to guns. These include suicides and gang-related shootings.

Drunk driving took 10,142 lives in 2019. 517 deaths were from "mass shootings" in 2019. A mass shooting is defined as 4 or more victims at one location excluding the perpetrator. Gang-related shootings of 4 or more victims are included in these statistics.

US has some of the strictest alcohol laws outside of Shari'a countries.

World's highest drinking age. Restrictions on public drinking that are absolutely rediculous when compared with civilized countries. Restrictions on mailing alcohol to a friend.

It's basically like Dubai.

Some ideas for stuff that can maybe be used more safely than alcohol:

  • relaxation: nature, music
  • social: volunteering for something you care about together, movies, board games, nature, museums, astronomy
  • drinks: tea & tisane, herb/fruit flavored water
  • cooking: vinegar, tomato, salted cooking wine/beer/etc
