16 Levels of Piano Composition: Easy to Complex by magnora7 in videos

I agree. Too much complexity (as she defined it) ended up being more of a demonstration, than actually being listenable and interesting. Or perhaps it's just because she crammed too much complexity in to such a short piece, and if that level of complexity was spread out over a 3 minute piece, it'd be better?

I think in the end, each type of complexity is just another tool that can be used. And just like carpentry, you don't have to use every single tool every single time you build something.

Hurdy Gurdy (The medieval wheel instrument) by magnora7 in music

[–]magnora7[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

From wikipedia:

Later on, the organistrum was made smaller to let a single player both turn the crank and work the keys. The solo organistrum was known from Spain and France, but was largely replaced by the symphonia, a small box-shaped version of the hurdy-gurdy with three strings and a diatonic keyboard.

In the eighteenth century, the term hurdy-gurdy was also applied to a small, portable barrel organ or street organ (a cranked box instrument with a number of organ pipes, a bellows and a barrel with pins that rotated and programmed the tunes) that was frequently played by poor buskers, street musicians specifically called organ grinders.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the mid 18th century origin of the term hurdy-gurdy is onomatopoeic in origin, after the repetitive warble in pitch that characterizes instruments with solid wooden wheels that have warped due to changes in humidity or after the sound of the buzzing-bridge.[11] Alternately, the term is thought to come from the Scottish and northern English term for uproar or disorder, hirdy-girdy[7]:41 or from hurly-burly,[7]:40 an old English term for noise or commotion. The instrument is sometimes more descriptively called a wheel fiddle in English, but this term is rarely used among players of the instrument. Another possible derivation is from the Hungarian "hegedűs" (Slovenian variant "hrgadus") meaning a fiddle.[12] In France, the instrument is known as vielle à roue (wheel fiddle)

So can you elaborate on an easy economy tempered with overworked people?

Imagine you have 10 million dollars. Your career choices don't really matter that much and you will still have a just fine quality of life. Many baby boomers experienced a very easy economy, that basically allowed them to rest on their haunches. Then when things actually start going bad, like in 2008, they don't know what to do and aren't prepared, despite having many opportunities to prepare. Abundance makes many people intellectually lazy.

Critique regarding people: recently people seem to not engage at all, no matter the subject. This seems to be a growing issue in my area, and may not reflect people generally.

I think this is true, and happens when the economy is too easy for too long. People get lazy because they do not see the need (nor really is there one) to pay attention to all the complexities of the world, and most people are overworked and underslept and tired as heck, so they don't devote mental cycles to anything outside their immediate life, as a self-preservation method.

The media is definitely corporate-owned and trying to influence our minds constantly.

You're probably right about the central bank, although governments can create crashes too, both with inflation and deflation. But the government shouldn't be in trillions of dollars of debt to a private entity, that's the real problem. Because then it's not free to make decisions, but instead has to follow the commands of the people owed trillions.

Reddit and declining relevance; the racists and the bigots were right about one thing. by HopeThatHalps in Reddit

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I more or less agree with everything you said. Reddit is going IPO in 2020 so they're trying to make themselves more marketable, but like you said, it's becoming much more of a "curated space" than a real-world community. So ironically as they try and clean up their image more and more, it becomes less and less appealing to normal people who find they don't fit in anymore.

Reddit's traffic is actually doing fine, but there is a lot of evidence that they are gaming their numbers. And if they're going IPO, and their company valuation is based on traffic numbers, why wouldn't they? During the 2016 election reddit was the #6 most visited site on the entire internet.

We hope here to have a space to agree to disagree, where people can say their part and not have to face the wrath of going against the reddit hivemind, as we have no downvote and the site is designed to lessen echo-chamber effects, including the addition of mod rules that limit the deletion abilities of mods instead of it being a free-for-all. You can read more information about this from the links in the footer of every page.

I had the same migration path from digg to reddit to saidit, and we are doing our best to learn from the lessons of the past.

Thanks for the feedback. In response I'll say there's plenty of porn content all over the internet, there's really no reason for me to have to sift through porn constantly to figure out what is legal and what is illegal porn, which could get us shut down. There are plenty of other sites that offer this content, and we don't plan to change our policy here because it would not benefit the site.

Secondly, the downvote system is often used by the trolls, to control what looks popular and what doesn't. The fact saidit doesn't have a downvote prevents this downvote brigading, which is extraordinarily common on reddit and destroys the quality of the information stream. This is one of saidit's primary features.

Having 2 ways to upvote is more options than most other sites out there, and furthermore you can sort by funny content or insightful content if you prefer, which is a feature reddit doesn't offer.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Human speech may have a universal transmission rate: 39 bits per second by magnora7 in science

The final sentence struck me:

Also thinking about how low a bitrate 39 bits per second is... it's maybe no wonder most animals haven't developed speech. It's a very subtle information gain.

I wonder how many bits per second come from body language and other non-verbal cues.

Also I wonder if it'd be possible to come up with a cell-phone encryption method that only uses 39 bits per second, if that's actually capable of representing human speech.

Saidit.net Canary #9 by magnora7 in SaiditCanary

[–]magnora7[S,M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

I just want to add an addendum to this Canary for clarity and transparency: We did receive a DMCA notice many months ago regarding a video streaming sub that we were forced to shut down in response (or else saidit would be shut down). We also received fake DMCA notices for another sub, but we recognized those as fake (because they originated from cloudflare rather than our server company) and took no action. However this all happened while hosted on US servers, and very soon after it happened (but not because of it) we moved the servers to Switzerland.

So technically I could consider removing the following lines:

We have not been contacted by any lawyers

and

We have not had any censorship problems with the server company

because the DMCA notice we got through the server company probably originated from a lawyer (although we don't know that for sure) and our server company's hand was forced (they have a "black box" kind of policy where they just pass along the DMCA notices, they don't make any decisions as to the validity of them). So technically our server company was censoring us via the lawyer request, although they were only requesting the removal of copyrighted material.

If we didn't remove the offending content (they cited 22 links all in the same sub) then the entire site would've been shut down. There was a lot of discussion about this as it was happening many months ago.

So technically I could remove those 2 lines from the canary. However, since our move to Switzerland, we no longer have any obligations to the original DMCA request originating from some lawyers, as we're outside of the US now (as well as the fact we fully complied with and resolved the original request to ensure the longevity of the site). So the 2 lines I could potentially take out, I am leaving in the canary, because of the fact they only were a problem for a period of about 1 month, and were completely resolved with no leftover issues, and furthermore the laws themselves no longer apply, due to our relocation outside the US. Given the relocation to a new set of national laws and a new server company, I consider the clock "reset" on those two lines. While I could see the argument for taking them out I have decided to leave them in as we are currently functioning as legally unimpeded as we were when the site originally launched, and the period during which we were affected was very brief and no longer applies.

However they're finding with Trump that his words are so disconnected from his actions that listening to his words is entirely useless at best, and purposefully misdirecting at worst.
