I liked this wiki article. I learned that the "pied" in pied piper means "multicolored" and is referring to the clothing the piper wore.

And I had no idea this story potentially has a real basis in reality, in a town that has a street and church mural after the event. Pretty wild!

On the plus side, most people now have been exposed to a forum before, so it's more now a problem of migrating cultures, rather than people just learning what a forum is for the first time. Which was the case for the the usenet September 1993 example that created the phrase "Eternal September" after AOL came in to existence and flooded usenet.

Now it's people who have forum experience migrating to other forums. Which has positives and negatives. People are more sophisticated in their understandings of forums in general, but also some people bring bad habits from other low-quality forums.

It's about narrative control. You control the minds of the people, then you also control their actions by extension.

It's always about power and control with those at the top. That's why they're there in the first place, they've made their lives about acquiring power and control over others, and disregarded morality in the process because it only limits them

Not even just communist, but authoritarian technocrats.

There's all shades of authoritarians pushing their censorship. If you want to see right-wing authoritarian censorship, go to thedonald.win and post something like "Zionists control this website" or a factual negative thing about Trump, and watch it disappear.

The left-backed censorship is just more obvious because they have control of more major websites, like reddit. But sites like thedonald.win and voat show that the right is doing the same thing if given the chance.

So I think it's really an authoritarian vs anti-authoritarian thing, more than a right vs left thing.

It's like this political cartoon: https://grrrgraphics.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/march_of_tyranny1.jpg

[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The larger an organization gets, the more their focus shifts to minimizing liability.

Small organizations take risks, because they don't have a lot to lose. Huge organizations like reddit can only fall and have little room to grow, so the entire game then becomes minimizing any liabilities that could harm future profits.

So "free speech" means literally nothing to reddit. Any speech that creates a liability for them, is something they want to remove. And that's all they care about anymore.

Can we talk about authoritarianism? by dykeotomy in censorship

[–]magnora7 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Congrats on seeing through the left/right fake divide, and seeing the real divide. Those in power trying to control everyone, vs those being controlled. It's the only real divide there ever has been, imo. Authoritarian is the perfect word, because it transcends the left/right divide completely. Which is why the media will never mention such a thing, and keeps focusing on lesser divides like race, gender, religion, and left/right. As long as people are focused on these lesser divides, the authoritarians running the show will not be challenged. This is the power of divide-and-conquer.

I honestly can't imagine anything more important to talk about. So much of modern society comes back to this concept.

Marking spam and removing are separate operations an admin can do to remove a comment. I am not sure the difference between the two, honestly. Maybe when it's removed it does mark it as item._spam. Does item._removed exist as a classifier, I wonder?

Very nice, I'm impressed. I think your approach is good, to send an API add-on to display the comments page in "modlog" mode. Smart.

I am not quite sure you have the right lines in builder.py, but you're very close. I think that code is for deletions, when a user deletes a comment of their own volition. We are looking for removals, which is when an admin or mod removes the comment. I think the code to filter out removed comments would probably be around that area in builder.py too. If you find that part, then we'll practically have the solution.

Then lastly we'd have to figure out how to intercept the API call and do the correct action. routing.py has most of the API handling. So somehow that switch needs to be able to be flipped by the correct API call to a comment page.

Definitely getting close... keep going and we might actually get this feature developed!

You literally cannot mention TheDonald.win without your post being completely shadowbanned, and this seems to apply for many other alternatives too. And this occurred on an already-existing post, not a new post. They searched old posts to nuke them. The whole list of alternatives that was stickied at the top of /r/redditAlternatives was deleted and d3rr had to re-write it like this to get past their new keyword filter.

This is insane! What website forbids even the mention of their competition? They've gone full authoritarian

They literally just completely nuked the list of reddit alternatives on /s/redditalternatives

https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/hi97fz/list_of_active_reddit_alternatives_v5/

Now you can't even mention several of the sites without your post being shadowbanned, so d3rr had to make up stupid words and spacings to get past the keyword filter, just to keep the list alive. Pretty unbelievable they've sunk this low, to be honest.

Here you go sir. You could probably search "removed" in the codebase to find where to start finding the code for removed comments. I think the "removed" flag is written in to the database in its own column for each comment. Good luck, let me know if I can help

Not a bad idea. We've got a to-do list that's already 95 items long, and your project idea would probably take 5-10 hours minimum. I'll add it to the list. If someone wants to help, our code is all open source and we could use help to develop useful features like this.

I see what you're saying, but I'm not sure what the alternative is. Just leave the comment up? If we leave every comment up that's removed, then what's the point of having moderators at all? You see what I mean?

Hey welcome! I've left reddit too, I used to write articles that would get to the top of /r/conspiracy but now they get consistently downvoted in to the gutter. So I know how you feel. Happy to have you aboard!

They've already gotten one.

The previous comment they made was

strike 1: "I would kill her not even kidding.. This is in the US could he not just shoot her and get away with that?"

He broke the rule twice now and got a warning after the first time. He's broken the rule twice, quite openly too. He's banned.

I am removing people advocating violence. That is all I am removing.

You're banned for repeatedly advocating violence after already getting one prior warning. Goodbye.

Exhausting is the perfect word for the political side of reddit. It's like arguing with a wall. A wall that hates you, haha.

I think we should use real words, instead of slinging slurs like children which only escalates the situation. But perhaps escalating the situation is your intent? I prefer peace.
