Yeah. I mean literally every big government has an online hired presence, at this point. As do most big corporations.

For example, Monsanto (now Bayer) is known to have a hired shill pool that is running forums 24/7. They look for negative mentions of their company and products, and then their shill network works those threads to make Monsanto and their products look better. Including forum-sliding negative comments and posts.

Now multiply that across hundreds of companies and governments, with thousands of incentives. And basically you get a ton of noise, that is trying to drown out real discussion. And now with AI bots, this process is automated.

Yeah basically every forum is under attack, by lots of different groups, all the time. Especially now with AI commenting bots that can flood forums with nonsense. It's just how the internet is now, and I'm frustrated by it tbh. A far cry from the internet in 2003.

Saidit gets about a third of a million page load requests a month, and probably half of those are fraudulent (originating from malicious DDOS attacks). During a heavy attack day we might have 10x the page load requests of normal, during which probably 98% of the page requests are fraudulent. Cloudflare ensures (most of) those fraudulent connection attempts stop at cloudflare and don't hit our main server, which is how we're able to stay online.

We've been DDOS attacked multiple times daily for 5 years now. As a result we can never turn our DDOS protection off. So someone out there is setting aside resources on the regular to do this. For years.

I remember the day saidit opened to the public, before we had a registration captcha set up, someone used a script to register all the active usernames from the subreddits where I showed people saidit, and then they auto-registered thousands of usernames, and stole everyone's usernames who might've migrated. Just to frustrate migration and growth of this site. They did this literally hours after we opened the website, they had an automated script ready to go.

This place has been under nonstop attack since day 1, via every method possible from hardware attacks to social engineering, it has honestly surprised me how bad it's been over the last 5 years, I would've never guessed it was this bad. Whoever these groups are, they really don't want forums like saidit to exist.

Yes I agree in theory. But in practice, the internet backbones are already owned by a small handful of "Tier 1" Internet Network Service Providers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tier_1_network#List_of_Tier_1_networks

L3 Technologies being the biggest, and has been for a long time. Every backbone cable is owned by these big companies, and they all have government connections and so on.

And it's known companies like AT&T basically have "black rooms" set up at the internet backbone connection points, where the three letter agencies have their own equipment set up to sniff and intercept traffic, and AT&T isn't allowed inside. Read about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A

Anyway, things are bad, but it's not futile. I wouldn't be running saidit if it was futile.

But in the short term, things will probably continue to consolidate (or remain consolidated) and it makes me honestly question the usefulness of the internet over the next few decades. It may eventually just turn in to TV, where you can't really interact with it in a serious way, it just pushes ideas at you all day. That seems to be the direction it's heading. And the AI bots now flooding every forum with garbage content isn't helping, so even websites that don't want to move in that direction are being forced to by malicious traffic.

But on the main point, I'm sure the current cloudflare thing will be fine over the next few weeks and months. Cloudflare seems competent and motivated. The long-term direction of the internet as a whole is concerning though, to say the least. Thanks for the chat. Have a good one!

Yes, in the long term either cloudflare will improve, or an alternative to cloudflare will arise. But in the short-term there is a cat-and-mouse game going on which is impacting the whole internet.

The DDOSers are too powerful, and nothing is reigning them in. I think attacking public communication lines repeatedly should be a jailable offense. I mean if someone went and cut the internet fiber lines, they'd rightfully go to jail. So why is jamming them with made-up data packets 24/7 so no one else can use them any different?

Anyway, things will probably be back to normal in a day or two, I'd guess. Have a great Sunday!

In the future, this means that if cloudflare were to suddenly disappear or go out of business one day, then basically every forum site including saidit would be exposed to endless DDOS and go down forever until a new cloudflare alternative arose and people switched over and got everything set up again. And there just isn't a good cloudflare alternative. They basically have a monopoly. It's a pretty weird and precarious situation. Not great for the future of free speech, or the internet in general. But no one has really made a viable cloudflare alternative, because it requires owning tons of bandwidth which costs a lot of money.

Looks like maybe the problem is this recent popularization of a new attack method of generating the DDOS attacks from within cloudflare's trusted network. So cloudflare is having to clamp down to counter this new type of attack, hence all the weird new little authentication stages and whatnot.

A few years ago we were hosted in Switzerland and our server company there actually forcefully dropped us as a client because the nonstop DDOSes were so bad it was impacting their entire server farm and eating up all their bandwidth. Like we were breaking their whole company.

Running a forum is surprisingly heavy-duty. Saidit is a fortress. And forums that aren't, get destroyed. It's a real problem for free speech

Yeah I had the same issue with posting comments returning a 403. Refreshing the page and commenting quickly seems to fix it. They must've added some sort of timeout. They must be having a particularly bad attack, I've not seen some of these limitations before

That's a great question, and I wish I had a great answer. Unfortunately as a user I don't think there's much you can do other than to be patient with the cloudflare stuff, and keep an eye out for bad actors. And help others with these things.

The problem is with the fraudulent traffic, and I don't know how an average user could help that. Push for legislation to prosecute DDOSers? Run a new forum website using the saidit open source code? That's all I can think of. If anyone has other ideas, I'm all ears

Just FYI this setting is automated by cloudflare and means we're under attack big time. I also noticed another big forum I frequent is also in lock-down mode today as well, so it's probably internet-wide. I wonder if it's election bots/shills getting started for this upcoming election.

It is frustrating, but the alternative is that we get DDOS'd so hard the site goes down. So I know it sucks, but just be happy the site is up at all, because most websites in our position wouldn't be online anymore.

This data doesn't even include deaths that died within 14 days of getting the shot, as they weren't counted as "vaccinated" so the numbers are likely much worse!

And furthermore, the spike protein and mRNA was supposed to go away in a matter of weeks. Instead they're finding the mRNA is put in to DNA through an enzyme called reverse-transcriptase.

They said it would stay in the muscle cells near the injection area. But (especially without aspiration) it will get in to the blood. And because of the nanolipids it's coated in to get it inside of cells, it can also cross the blood-brain barrier.

So people are having mRNA go in to their heart cells, and brain cells, and begin making spike proteins.

And studies now show that in some percentage of people, the production of spike proteins NEVER ENDS.

So any health condition, such as amyloidosis, that can be caused by too many spike proteins coagulating in one area, will just get worse and worse. (Although I have read NAC, Nattokinase, and bromalin (aka pineapples) all help break these spike proteins down, so that might help if you are having weird heart or circulatory issues after getting the mRNA shots, but I am no doctor, I am just repeating what I have read so do you own research.

Furthermore it seems in some people the body adapts to the spike proteins, and begins to see them as part of the body so the immune system ignores them. Then upon infection of a new strain of covid, they get it REALLY BAD. This has to do with the igg4, and the disease is basically ADE (antibody-dependent enhancement) which people warned about from day 1. That's what the ferrets in the mRNA injection studies died from. ADE upon reinfection.

Almost as many people have died of the shots as have died of covid. That's what this video is saying. 150k died of the shots in the UK, and about 200k died of covid in the first year and a half of it in the UK. So the medicine has almost killed as many as the disease, and the death count overall is nearly doubled.

Yet even despite all this data, governments and corporations are STILL recommending this? It's truly unreal. The data is out. This is no longer a matter of question. This is a public health disaster, perhaps the worst in history. It's time to speak out.

Changing management isn't going to suddenly create more advertising buzz... if anything the opposite, because I've been promoting this site endlessly, for free, for years now. I mean fighting in the sense of arguing and posting tons of comments and posts that hijack entire threads and forums. Like for example, a thread might have 90 comments, 40 are russian shills arguing the pro-russian side, 40 are US shills arguing the US side, and then 10 are actual real people. Because the different shill groups try to shut each other down they get caught in arguments with each other, and those arguments end up making up the bulk of some threads. Especially if it's a contentious MSM hot button current issue for both sides, then it goes wild and normal folk can barely get a word in edgewise.

Unfortunately, what happens is people make subs with very questionable names and then upvote themselves and those subs to the front page daily for weeks, and begin posting actual legitimate news in those fringe subs like it's the main sub for the whole saidit website, and then over weeks and months new users see awful sub names on half the posts everyday and it absolutely drives people away.

It's a way to subvert the website, by making one fringe extremist sub take over the front page. And it's very hard to get rid of once it takes root. This has happened twice. So we have it this way for a reason. I wish we could have it defaulted to /all without this problem occurring. However I totally understand the desire for easier access to information.

That's why we added functionality so users can change their frontpage to 'all' by default in the 'preferences' button by your username. Guests without a username who want to view it can go to https://saidit.net/s/all as well. Thanks.

Agreed, although I'm not even sure what a decent compromise would honestly look like in practice. Just a complete walkback of everything they stated in the last few months? Even then, the problem still persists that made them try it in the first place, the motivations and people that caused it are not changed at all. Leaving reddit and planting roots on other forums is the only true way forward, imo. The huge power reddit has over the information flow of the current internet is insane, and that is the actual root problem underneath all the other problems. It's too centralized, and the power is being abused. Instead there needs to be many more forums that are all frequently used. Putting all our eggs in one basket was never a good idea.

I have to say the current strike method has succeeded in generating quite a bit of conversation though, which is good.

Monthly is a good idea too. Also a strike should have a goal and if the goal is accomplished the strike should end. I assume the goal is "end the API request fees" but several 3rd party services have already been killed off, so I'm not sure what a win looks like at this point.

I think the only real win is migrating off of reddit, because reddit is obviously culturally broken at the root, and it's not like the CEO is magically going to start behaving properly because of this strike. We know where reddit stands, and it has been this way for a long time, so we should be acting on it by migrating to other platforms.

Minus the bots and shills, I really wonder how many human beings are active on that website every month. I bet it's 1/10th of their stated number, they're trying to drive up valuations and metrics with bot activity, and reddit has done this from day 1 when they made tons of fake accounts to make reddit look popular, until it actually was. Saidit never did that. So reddit has a long long history of fluffing itself up to make it look like more than it is.

But overall I agree with the strike. I just think that a strike shouldn't have a fixed ending date, or they'll just wait it out and go back to normal. Also this should've happened years ago, there was just never enough of a unifying event until this API fiasco.

True, or it even could be just someone from a subreddit that hates one of the subs that migrated to saidit... could be a lot of things, but what is clear is that the attacks are sophisticated, and basically every forum these days suffers from these attacks. So really I think it's something more about controlling discourse on the internet, than about reddit specifically. Which would make sense that governments would have such programs, it's not expensive and yields a high return in terms of social control. And the JIDF, shareblue, Cambridge Analytica, Chinese shill groups, russian shill groups, Langley Air Force Base groups (which I believe one day was found to have generated 60% of reddit traffic), and so on are well-known to exist and operate across many forums, and they are all trying to control the whole thing of course so they can control the narrative. And they're all out-competing each other, and meanwhile normal people are drowning in propaganda and nonsense generated from all this activity. And the whole internet is slowly being ruined in the process, because the signal-to-noise ratio is going to crap with all the deliberate nonsense being posted so often.

Interesting technical analysis, I will think about that some more, thank you. They are obviously somehow able to get replies despite the IP changing with literally every request and jumping beyond any normal IP bounds of any service like tor. I don't know exactly how it works. Honestly it's beyond anything I've ever seen, it may be some gov't tech, who knows. It's quite obviously not some dumb script kiddies, there's no question about that. They know what they are doing and have lots of software specifically for this. I have also seen they have software that does automated account registration, and automated comment and post deletion after a saidit account is banned. They're quite obviously well-prepared, and a lot of this was unleashed on day 1 of saidit's launch, wherein a group on reddit literally scanned /r/conspiracy for regularly-commenting usernames and then registered all those usernames on saidit in order to frustrate the migration and scare off new users. They registered something like 5,000 accounts in under a half-day, on saidit's opening day, before we turned on a more advanced captcha system.

Saidit basically had to become a cyber-fortress just to exist, I probably personally spent over 1000 hours just on saidit cybersecurity alone. I learned how to write Cloudflare API bash scripts that send self-autogenerated IP ban lists (which I also wrote a script for) from our server to the cloudflare server, without having to use the paid service, just to save money. D3rr and I used every trick we know to get saidit as secure as it is, and he's even better with this stuff than I am.

Basically my point is, this is a very high hurdle to jump over, and it's little wonder a lot of reddit alternatives implode quickly. You have to absolutely have your stuff together from day 1, or the site will be taken down from malicious attacks that are just free-floating around the internet. Most people can't do this, and most forums fail. Especially if the forum is related to anything controversial.

This itself is a way to stifle the free speech of the masses. You literally have to be a cybersecurity expert just to run a dang forum in 2023. And that's not even mentioning the actual code of just getting the thing running in the first place. And then the critical mass problem of attracting enough users. The hurdles are too high, so it's little wonder there are so few viable reddit alternatives. It's not a good state of affairs for the internet and culture in general. And with with the improving quality of automated AI posting and commenting on top of that, I worry about the future of anonymous text-based forums.

It's kind of been blowing my mind how slowly reddit has collapsed, especially compared to digg which basically imploded overnight. Reddit did a good job containing the damage of public revolts compared to digg, despite all their other failures

As someone who does know what this looks like server-side, I can't understand why they would have an outage due to low traffic either. Unless they have some system that depends on bot activity that they're suddenly not getting or something like that, but it seems highly unlikely. My guess is they're probably panicking trying to compartmentalize and contain the damage from the strike, and making technical mistakes in the process, and blaming it on users

It's worse than that, these attackers can spoof any IP. Trillions of IPs. They often choose Tor node IP ranges to spoof, it seems, to overlap with real traffic, as a means to try and get us to ban tor and to also cover up their activity. They also spoof other IP ranges, but tor is their favorite.

No we can't change it, because turning down tor limitations results in tons of spam accounts and spam posts that make this site even more unusable.

Try having a fixed IP, or just turning off VPNs. VPNs are largely just honeypots anyway...
