Meh, not everyone is under china's influence. China is fragile, as ever. China's Empire shatters every 100 years, it's practically on a schedule. Seems we're about due again... CCP always overplays their hand. They've already destroyed so much of the foreign goodwill they've spent 3 decades building. Truly a shame. Maybe they can rediscover their honor if the people (like Hong Kong) demand it.

It could be faked, but if it was faked it wouldn't be the Chinese gov't doing the faking. It would be like the US gov't, just speaking from a motives perspective.

But the most likely case is that this is real footage, and China is probably very unhappy it's out there.

That's the thing about doing so much totalitarian stuff... eventually some of it gets noticed

Nuclear fission starts reacting and doesn't stop and if cooling isn't done right it can melt down (continue to burn forever). This is different than an explosive mechanism.

No it's not. The only difference is the density.

It's like gunpowder laid out out will burn, but if you pack a bunch together it explodes. Same thing.

The only "thing" I have to talk about is cybersecurity and how to run forums, which might be interesting in itself, but I'd probably have to write an article about it first and hone it down to an interesting set of factoids. [–]magnora7 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I thought The Island was a good movie, most people didn't like it. The people were tricked in to staying in to this perfect area and then they would randomly get selected to go on vacation to "The Island" which was actually an organ donation center, where their organs would be harvested to give to people who had paid money to reserve backup organs. So the main character escapes after realizing this, and they run through the real world, which is a kind of post-apocalyptic desert area.

I thought it was pretty compelling and had some great action scenes, but most people didn't seem to care for it for some reason. Kind of like Equilibrium, which I felt was overshadowed by The Matrix (which was also very very good)

Yeah good question, how did they even discover it was his in the first place? How did they link the account with this person? It must've been pretty clear where he felt there was no plausible deniability.

Which makes me wonder if they did IP tracing on those comments and tied it to his name, which would imply a gov't investigation, would it not? They'd have to get the IP from that website, as well as the IP of this person from the ISPs.

It's either that, or some of his comment were things that gave away his identity... like he posted something about him being a writer for tucker.

But the article doesn't seem to specify by which method he was figured out. I would really like to know the truth on this aspect of it.

Someone had the idea to sort subs by the ones with the newest posts or comments, that'd be kind of cool.

I think browsing subs by new is the best way to find new stuff. But yeah popular is kind of borked because the subscription numbers don't mean all that much because we auto-subscribed everyone to every sub for the first year or two when we small, to make sure people wouldn't miss any content. But after we stopped that, the subscriber numbers remain, so maybe we need a new algorithm by which to sort popular

I mean half of it is just human nature, and the other half is a workplace that has no protections for employees.

It's a giant industry farm, just like china. Yet somehow most people are content to work within it. I can't say I really understand the mentality. Everyone is a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" as Steinbeck put it, just waiting for their chance to make it rich.

It's really the same everywhere in the world to varying degrees, but in the US they've perfected it to a science and made it the cultural norm.

I don't think the founders of voat had anything to do with reddit

Founded in April 2014 as WhoaVerse, the website was a hobby project of Atif Colo (known on Voat as @Atko), then a student pursuing a BSc, who was later joined by Justin Chastain (known as @PuttItOut).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voat

I've been playing close attention to all this since it started and that's the first time I've ever heard someone say that reddit founders also made voat. If you have a source on that though, I'm all ears

Voat probably is a honeypot or something at this point though, I'd agree with that.

Yeah I'm super happy they got all their tech issues sorted out. I went there yesterday though and was kind of saddened by the vibe compared to a few weeks ago. It was more neutral and random a few weeks ago, now it's kind of a stream of similar information and memes without a lot of depth. It's okay, and they might be able to balance it out later somehow, but now that they've solved the tech problem they have to solve the cultural-hijacking problem. I think not having downvotes is crucial to that, and one thing I really am happy we did for saidit. Having downvotes makes the hivemind feedback loop happen much faster, and just like voat, ruqqus is seeing the effects of that I think. It's not all bad, I was just surprised to see the quickness of the change though. Saidit has undergone similar changes though at times, so I understand and I wish them the best. It's tough to balance everything. I am so glad we don't have downvotes though.

Yeah I agree it shouldn't matter either. I think it intensified with drug tests, which were mandated by insurance companies, because health insurance in the US goes through the employer. So the companies, through the insurance companies, demanded drug tests from everyone. Which meant that off-time wasn't fully in your control anymore.

Employees being a reflection of the company they work for has always been a thing though, and I imagine Tucker isn't too happy about how this make him or his show look, especially at this critical moment for him.

But I agree, he used a pseudonym for a reason... I find it disturbing a person can be fired for what were supposed to be anonymous comments made while he was off the job. Comments that weren't even violent and didn't break any US law.

But ultimately it's a PR game, and they're in the business of PR, and the office politics make sense that he has to go for the organization to remain dignified-looking to the public.

US "free speech" only really protects from the government, unfortunately. If he had a gov't job, he probably wouldn't have gotten fired. Corporations aren't really bound by much in the US, and that's the main problem. It's dog-eat-dog monarchy-style organizations in the American corporate world. If you make the king unhappy, you are banished. That's usually how it works. This guy made Tucker (and his news station by extension) look real bad, so now he's gone. It's all about the optics. Which is why those who can shout the loudest have such a disproportionate amount of power in this culture. "The customer is always right" and for Tucker his customers are viewers and ad agencies that don't want to be associated with the antics shown by this writer.

The good thing is we live in an era when people can at least communicate these thoughts online, even anonymously if they need to. I think having this open worldwide communication that didn't really exist 30 years ago, or the hundreds or thousands of years before that, has really changed the game and added a lot of counter-balance to the powerful attempting to control the narrative.

That's part of why I believe so much in the power of things like saidit, where people can actually say the thing that needs to be said but everyone is too afraid to say. And have conversations about it. And understand it better.

I feel like I have a lot more sympathy for mods. Do all mods experience stuff like this? Why is it like this?

Haha yeah. About half the people I moderate will work with me and are wonderful people just trying to do their best.

The other half blow up in my face at any action of moderation, have an emotional meltdown about free speech and how saidit is ruined.

Then about half of those harass me directly through PMs. About 10% create another account and break rules again straight away. About 1% post deliberate garbage to saidit (gross porn or worse) to deliberately mess up the site, so I have to ban that user too, remove all those posts, then I have to ban their IP.

Then about 1% will turn on a VPN and do it again with another username, and then I have to ban their new usernames and their VPN IP range.

And then about 0.1% will go to other websites and write a spin story to smear saidit and me over the event that just occurred (usually as an expose about how saidit hates free speech, even though they were breaking site rules by advocating violence, but they always leave that part out).

This is basically a normal day for me. People are basically either nice about it, or they go apeshit and go up this huge scale of escalation. But I have a process for it, and I just apply the process. It's routine at this point for me.

I can understand why the admin at voat just let it all go to shit, because some people use so many emotional tactics to try and get their ways, and it's kind of exhausting. But that's the point, they want you to be so exhausted by their antics that you tacitly allow it just so they stop throwing tantrums.

And then some admins and mods react way too strongly the other way to this pressure and go on drives to purge out these people (because they are tired of dealing with them) and I think that's what we are seeing on reddit right now.

It honestly takes a very careful balance to deal with the troublemakers, but not go overboard. That's why we have the pyramid of debate as a guide, and we have our rules set up the way we do.

There's just no pleasing everyone. You will always have some people on the anti-censorship side that that will cry crocodile tears that they can't shout fire in a crowded theater and yell open threats to kill people. And you will also have on the pro-censorship side the people who can't believe the "horrible" things that you allow to exist on the forum, as if it should be a carefully curated walled garden that never displeases their particular worldview, and you're responsible for that. Both are obviously untenable positions. But as an admin or mod, the challenge is to balance all this.

It's surprisingly non-trivial.

Nice that's awesome! I'm adding it to my wallpaper pool, well done.

The only way I could possibly think of to improve it, would be to add a few obvious VHS tracking-error-like distortion lines. A bit of left-right warping and light static across a narrow vertical band like this: https://forum.videohelp.com/attachments/4663-1292117477/frame56.jpg

Or another (more extreme) example: https://mediaarea.net/_/img/QCTools/image64.jpg

That'd really lock in the VHS effect, along with the subtle and uniform VHS lines/static you've already added

You're right it doesn't mod any subs. I wonder why it has posts at all? I find it confusing, I should figure out how this system works.

I guess the automod we have is currently being used to re-post things to ensure alternate sources, or ensure things don't get deleted. But just copying posts doesn't require mod privileges.

It's funny as an admin if I try to look at /u/automoderator's IP address, it gives me an error page. I guess that makes sense since it doesn't have an actual IP, just funny though.

I have force-added /u/automoderator to /s/DropTheT right now and we can begin an experiment, as you'll be the first to have automod actually have mod privileges.

Maybe if you don't mind, if you figure out stuff that actually works, perhaps you wouldn't mind documenting it on the saidit wiki here: https://saidit.net/wiki/automoderator You should already have permissions to do so, and we'd appreciate any additional documentation from anything you can figure out at all (even if it's just linking to reddit-based resources because everything is 99% the same) because this is new territory for us.

There have been a lot of benefits to it as well. Just like every other tool, humanity is going to have to learn how to use it correctly and in a beneficial way. Right now we're all toddlers with cellphones, mesmerized by the shiny apps. Some day we will grow up and use it like the tool it is, but we're going to have to make the missteps first to learn what not to do

Infantilizing mainstream culture makes people easier to control. And as long as the world can support such an ideological bubble, it's often easier in the short term for most people to act like children, instead of having to think and work.

But eventually this laziness and lack of connection with reality, ends up causing resource shortages. And then once your bubble is popped, but you never learned how to grow up, then you're really in trouble. That's the position a good portion of America finds itself in, and for many there are no more debts and loans they can take out to keep the bubble afloat.

The main issue is that it lacks rhythm.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm curious what you mean exactly. It seems tough to establish rhythm in only 3 words, but that's not really something I'd considered before either

Right above where it says "moderators of /s/" that's where the force add option should be.

I think you're right maybe it's an admin-only thing. I don't know how to access /u/saidit-bot to accept things. I can force add /u/automoderator to your admin team if you want.

Does every sub use the same user /u/automoderator? Another option would be to go to the subs shown in https://saidit.net/user/automoderator/ and ask the mods of those subs how they got it to work.

Thanks, I wish I could read the whole article without giving them my identity though...

I found one everyone can read: https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/10/media/tucker-carlson-writer-blake-neff/index.html

So basically they found out a hidden online username of the writer, dug through years of posts, and then the worst they could find they're firing him over it. Some of it is pretty bad, but this also seems like cancel culture destroying more targets they don't like. However some of the stuff the guy said is pretty cringey. Nothing violent though. How did they figure out this guy's pseudonym in the first place though? And no one seemed to care to dig in to this until the guy got popular enough to be worth taking down.

Awesome! I'm glad you got it figured out, thanks for letting us know the answer.

I have literally zero idea how to use the automod, I've never once messed with it, I'm sorry.

I think you can add automod as a mod by using "Force add" rather than invite. There's another box next to the invite box that is 'force add moderator' and I think that's what you need to use for automod.

Please read the rules: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/j1/the_saiditnet_terms_and_content_policy/

And carefully read the mod rules: https://saidit.net/s/SaidIt/comments/w6s/saidit_rules_for_moderators/

And you will see they're doing it correctly. Thanks
