Saidit, what if we showed who voted on everything? by magnora7 in AskSaidIt

[–]Tom_Bombadil 8 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Sounds great. I've been wondering who the hell is voting for that MartinTimothyesque bullshit.

However, Froglich hates that idea.

Edit: I have changed my mind. Does anyone know what the Reddit rationale was being leaving vote counts anonymous. I'd be concerned about a future big brother crackdown where voting info could be used as evidence against someone.

Here's some historical situations that may be similar in nature to a future event.

  • Red scare McCarthy-era. People were targeted as anarchist, or socialist, or people who might vote for "socialist proposals"
  • The 9/11 Muslim hysteria where thousands of Muslims were rounded up and jailed for as many as 6 months without probable cause, or any evidence
  • There was a hunt for anonymous a while back, so dissident programmer types may draw additional scrutiny.

The last 2 were within the past two decades in the US, so that's not ancient history. Who knows what other events occurred in other countries.

Up-votes may actually be more risky than actual comments. My guess is that up-votes would be manipulated as metadata. Prosecutors can create broad assumptions about intent, and there's no way to easily clarify that intent, or refute it. They'll use one-sided gotcha questions like, "have you quit beating your wife yet, yes or no?". That can catch people off guard and sunk their defense.

I'm going to have to agree with OldManCorley on this one. There are unforseen risks that could easily outweigh the short-term benefits.

Intentional sabotage cannot be ignored forever. Certain agent provacatuers do need to be addressed. Other groups have already taken the lead on this, and dealt accordingly.

One idea I had was to create one of those bots that chime in with "and my axe", etc. A custom version could be created to haunt the posts of certain repeat offenders.

Something like:

"Free speech is not a core value, when it is apples solely to statements that an individual approves. Free speech is a value when it is defended for those who use their voice to make statements that that one despises. Saidit supports free speech in all forms.

Unfortunately, certain groups or individuals have been posting comments that we cannot find any factual evidence to support. Attempts have been made to contact these individuals, but without success.

These voices have not been silenced in the interest of our commitment to free speech as a value. Saidit does not condone or endorse messages or the message history of {agent provacatuer XYZIJK}.

Please use your own critical judgment when considering messages from XYZIJK; AND MY AXE!!!.

-There I SaidIt!

Just a thought. What does the group think?

One last point of consideration. Dissent voices should be carful considered.
Good call OldManCorley. You changed my mind.

Hey Froglich. You suck.

Edit 2:. I didn't read the updated comment before the previous edit. I agree with major that ignoring bullshit is the best way to deal with most commenting issues. Organizational sabotage is an entirely different issue.

Also, if implemented, can we call the 'my axe' response "the moat/sewer of debate" or "sewer of the pyramid" or "sewer of disgrace". Free speech Bot, or "free speech defender", or sumpting.

The Pacific Northwest is in the grips of a measles outbreak that has already sickened 52 people in Washington and four in Oregon, nearly all of them children. Health officials say the spread of the highly contagious disease—which had been all but eradicated in the United States—is being fueled by parents, sometimes with the approval of their doctors, who refuse to immunize their children.

Measles is not a deadly disease. It's very similar to chicken pox. Do you know of anyone who has died of chickenpox? Me either.

It actually boosts your immune system for your entire lifespan. I would have no problem contracting measles of given the chance.

Having a 2 week fever would suck. But with plenty of vitamin A, I would be fine and immune boosted for life.

Well, it looks like the bill that /u/Orangutan had posted had already passed into federal law on 1/14/2019.

H.R.672 - Combating European Anti-Semitism Act of 2017

Even if you disagree about this particular example, surely you agree in principle that lying about important things is bad, and that we should be checking for and calling out these lies.

This is the bill passed into law.

Combating European Anti-Semitism Act of 2017

This bill requires the Department of State to include in its Annual Report on International Religious Freedom information about each European country where there have been particularly significant threats or attacks against Jewish persons or institutions. The report shall include information about the security needs of such Jewish communities, U.S. efforts to partner with European law enforcement agencies and civil society groups, European public awareness initiatives to promote pluralism and tolerance, and efforts by European governments to adopt and apply a working definition of anti-Semitism.

This US law is designed to monitor alleged anti-Semitic activity in Europe.
However, it doesn't protect any other minority groups. Nothing about Arabs, Persians, Slavic, Hispanics, African, Asian, etc.

Why is the Congress passing laws requiring the US State Dept to monitor alleged activity in multiple countries in Europe?

The law exclusively benefits the Jewish community, while leaving out all other groups.

I didn't find any info that was false.

This is a crucially important feature, because it prevents nefarious agents from suppressing popular ideas that resonate with many people.

  • Controlling the terms of a debate through the comments section
  • Forum sliding (also controls the debate)
  • Vote reduction
  • Vote/voter influence/suppression
  • Others?

Please make suggestions to this list if you are aware of other methods of manipulation

Access to information should be a human right (IMHO).

Including subs that aren't subscribed to is a great way to broaden proles horizons. It's like a news paper. You don't have to read any article, but you can't know what you're missing without a headline.

Censorship by omission is the most common method of supressing info. Reddit is guilty of this heinous crime. This should be discouraged.

I like the current system, but maybe it is time for a change.

I would propose some TBD ratio similar to:

  • Subscribed 67%
  • World news / Current Events 13%
  • TIL/Science/ 20%
  • Conspiracy 5%.

I understand the desire for total immersion in ones interests. However, this can lead to group-think and isolationism. This should be discouraged.

Academic and intellectual communitarianism should be encouraged. Expand the communities horizons. They are plenty of fascinating wonders that we'll never experienced unless other enlightened individuals make the effort to share them, and there's a platform for exposure.

What do you folks think???

Does anyone else have any suggestions. :-)

"There’s a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people." – Bill Adama by magnora7 in quotes

[–]Tom_Bombadil 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

This is a myth. The police were originally formed to protect the property and power of wealthy men.

The goon squads of the late 19th century were formalized, and evolved into the police force. They still operate in much the same way. That's why black people get pulled over in nice neighborhood. Unarmed African Americans are shot in cold blood with no accountability.

A classic example of this is that video Magnora7 posted today of the police attack in France..

Notice how the cops always show up when peaceful protesters are tear gassed and beaten for demanding a better share of the economic pie. Agentt provacatuers, under cover agents, kettling, etc.

Some police are good people, but they chose a career as a glorified goon. Everything else they do is PR to make them appear to provide a public service.

That doesn't change the fact that they are Goons.

Don't let the PR fool you. The cops and the military have everything in common. One group steals. The other defends the stolen property.

Personal disclosure edit:. I'm a 3rd generation US Army veteran. My goon family had fought in WW2, Vietnam, and Iraq 2. I was raised in a goon family. Went to goon elementary, on a goon base.

I think I know something about being a goon.

The Easter island statues have bodies by useless_aether in AlternativeHistory

[–]Tom_Bombadil 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There are a number of additional interesting anomalies about the moai.

Interesting facts about the Moai statues.

All but 53 of the 887 moai statues known to date were carved from tuff (a compressed volcanic ash). There are also 13 moai carved from basalt, 22 from trachyte and 17 from fragile red scoria.

On the surface this isn't that interesting. The interested part is that there aren't any known basalt quarry's above sea level in Easter Island.

French diver Jacques Cousteau referred to a carved under water basalt quarry that he couldn't explain. (I couldn't find a link.) The implication being that the basalt Moai were carved from an ice age-era quarry when the sea level we're much lower, and thus the materials were accessable.

However, I did find s link to a different source that makes the same claim and more...

The Mysteries of Easter Island. Page 4:

Even on our preliminary reconnaissance trip Schoch found evidence that the earliest moai may have differed materially from the later moai. The earliest moai appear to have been more finely worked from harder basalts, compared to the volcanic tuffs of most moai, which date to later periods. The few surviving basalt moai have been found at deeper stratigraphic levels below other moai and the platforms upon which they were erected, or were reused in later structures—thus indicating the basalt moai are among the earliest on the island. Furthermore, at least one of the basalt moai (now housed in the museum on Easter Island) is of a very strange form; with an elongated head and well-defined breasts it is often considered a female while virtually all other moai are apparently males.
Another major puzzle, which is directly applicable to the chronology and dating of the moai, is the matter of where various moai were quarried. Quarries on the rim of the volcanic crater, where large moai were carved from the volcanic tuffs, are well exposed and still contain partially carved moai in place. We inspected these quarries carefully. However, the quarries where the few basalt moai were carved have never been definitively located, despite the small size of the island. Based on the geology of Easter Island, Schoch expects that any suitable basalt deposits would occur lower in the stratigraphic section, so low in fact that they might currently be under sea level off the coast of the island. That is, the basalt quarries might be under water. How could this be? It is difficult to conceive that the ancient Easter Islanders were quarrying rock below sea level. Alternatively, Schoch hypothesizes, the “lost basalt quarries” might be under sea level now because they are of extreme antiquity, and thus the basalt moai carved from them are extremely ancient. Sea levels have risen dramatically since the end of the last ice age, some ten thousand or more years ago, and if the basalt moai were quarried along the coast of Easter Island from areas since inundated by the sea, this could help to date the basalt moai, and is immediately suggestive that they are thousands of years older than conventionally believed to be the case.

Rongo rongo could be a global text or art form from iceage era civilizations.

Mnemonic pointed out that wikipedia is years behind on the Moai bodies, and that should have been easy as they have Moai with bodies in museums already.

Anyone care to guess how long it will be until mainstream archeology recognizes that human civilization likely goes back into the ice age??? 13,000 years, or more...

Or it could be bullshit. I doubt it, though.

Eliminate corporate personhood.

This will make owners liable for their corporate actions. Corporate owners get sued directly.

CO2 levels passed 415 ppm and Reddit declared the world is about to end. Ironically greenhouses keep the ppm at 1500 for optimum plant growing. by Orangutan in environment

I used to believe most everything you just stated.

However, I had not been notified that global warming stopped in the 97, and had been remarkably stable since then. "Man made global warming" literally stopped happening in 97.

Co2 has continued to dramatically rise since then (if you believe that parts per million can be considered dramatic increase). However, there has been no significant change in temp (for instruments that can't be tampered with). For 22 years...

If CO2 was a climate forcing factor, then we should see a linear increase in temp relative to the CO2 levels.

Fortunately, this hasn't been observed.

What has been observed are increases in climatologists climate model severity for future outcomes. These models have exploding with devastating predictions, that are far beyond anything were seeing in reality.
They are also routinely pushing out their predictions to start today, and severely occur in roughly 30 years. Yesterday's 30 year away impending doom, is 30 years in the future's impending doom. We were suppose to be underwater in 2020. These models are hoaxes.

All mathematical models are bad, but some models are useful.
Meaning that no model ever truly represents what is happening in reality, but some models are useful and can predict outcomes with reasonable reliability.

If a model cannot reliably predict outcomes, then it is worse than useless. These models exacerbate bad decisions.

The use of this type of pseudoscience modeling could be called "the garbage in, garbage out conjecture".

Current "climate models" have nothing to do with actual physical reality.

I haven't seen any strong evidence that CO2 is a climate forcing factor.

Curiously, the sun is treated as if it is continuously and uniformly stable. We know this can't be possible, because we have observed that other stars have tremendous activity.
Yet, we never discuss changes in the sun in terms of it's impact on the climate/weather.

As seen from above, it is all already lost.

Nothing is lost, yet.

There is a perfectly rationale reason for the continued use of these bogus models.
IMO the reason for this is actually much worse than the "global warming" threat.
