There are at least 6 common mental disorders, and numerous ways to piss off a kid. If I were to say a kid's interest in Barbie dolls caused her suicide because she had Anorexia nervosa or just because she thought she was fat, I'd be wrong, just as wrong if I assumed a kid killed herself because she didn't like not being a boy. It's normally impossible to claim that a person killed her/himself because of ONE problem. The girl you mention required psychological treatment. It's that simple. Her lack of ability to get well is what caused her suicide.

I'm actually quite concerned with the trend whereby children want to determine their sexual orientation before they're 18, and the tolerance of that idiocy.

What makes matters worse is the politicization of that problem, for the sake of additional Republican votes.

We agree entirely that there is a serious problem.

I'm not going to agree with anyone that a person can be murdered by gender ideology.

That's an incredibly broad assumption, and this example by the OP is ridiculous:

It's not intellectual, it's not honest, and it's not a crime.

The lady claiming that someone was murdered by gender ideology is obviously wrong and promoting obvious misinformation, whether she's aware of it or not.

Reddit doesn't have to support the spread of misinformation, nor should it. The content policy is in place to reduce the overtaking ot Reddit by very active, highly funded, misinformation propaganda engines, some of which are run by boomers collecting disability checks while criticizing the liberals who've made possible the disability checks. (Reduce funding for the disability programs and some of this misinformation sharing would go away, while the disabled are forced to find jobs.) This post is a very good reason for the existence of Reddit's content policy.

It's an opinion, by someone who made a graph to display that opinion. (I'm surprised I have to explain this.)

That opinion is that the distribution of booster shots, as well as deaths were somehow in similar peaks and troughs, which is impossible. Booster shots and deaths are not periodic, they're in broader trends that are not punctuated. Booster shots have been offered over a long 2 year period in Japan, without interrruptions. Deaths are also not interrupted.

Look at reliable sources for those broad trajectories of development (not OPINION), such as these:

Thank you, but this:

Here is the admission that the Ukrainian labs are very far from harmless, and at a minimum contain hazardous material that can be used as a biological weapon

Is false.

So do bio labs exist inside Ukraine, and is the US supporting them?

Yes, and yes. Ukraine does operate biological laboratories that receive US funding. The US undersecretary of state Victoria Nuland affirmed those facts in a Senate foreign relations committee hearing this week, in which the Republican senator Marco Rubio asked directly if Ukraine had biological weapons.

Nuland did not answer the question head on. “Ukraine has biological research facilities,” she said, adding that there was concern that Russian forces were trying to gain control of the labs. “We are working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces.”

Nuland’s comments were seized upon by far-right commentators as evidence of a secret plot. In fact, US funding to the laboratories had its roots in the fall of the Soviet Union, after which money was pumped into Ukraine and other countries to help them transfer scientific skills away from weapons towards public health.

The scheme was originally known as Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) but is now more commonly referred to as biological engagement. It has been successful in helping former Soviet and other countries fulfill public health obligations.

“This is one of the best things that we do,” Dr Gigi Gronvall, senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told the Guardian.

Most of the work of the Ukraine labs today, Gronvall said, involves surveillance of diseases in animals and people as an early-warning system for illnesses such as African swine fever, which is endemic in the region.

“We know pathogens don’t respect borders, so helping to put out public health fires before they become too big is an advantage to all of us,” she said. Do the Ukraine laboratories store dangerous biological agents?

As part of their work the labs do seem to hold dangerous pathogens. We know that because WHO is urging Ukraine to destroy any highly dangerous agents to avoid the risk of a disastrous outbreak should one of the labs be hit by Russian forces.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/11/russia-biological-weapon-claim-us-un-ukraine-bio-labs-explainer

This is an ADDITIONAL reason Russian should not invade Ukraine, or continue bombing civilian buildings.

Long before November 2021, the last booster shots were taken in other countries. In general, boosters were not necessary in November 2021. Japan did not conduct sufficient COVID studies of the causes of deaths throughout the COVID period and thereafter. Yeah because the reckless and pointless expansion of NATO isn't a thing.

NATO has been a necessary response to Russian aggression and the nuclear threat, OBVIOUSLY. WTF.

We've been the aggressor against Russia for 30 years, but that isn't a thing either.

While Russia did NOTHING as aggressors to other countries? How fucking delusional is that?

We looted the former Soviet Union the instant it collapsed, allowing and even encouraging apparatchiks and crimelords to flee the country and transfer their bank accounts to the West, letting services, industry, and employment collapse in their wake, causing widespread alcoholism, drug addiction, and skyrocketing abortion, but these are not things.

False - there was NOTINNG to loot.

The bipartisan use of Ukraine as a money-laundering service for the American political elite and their useless spawn, the vicious genocidal war waged by Kiev against the people of the Donbas, the idiot CIA's Maidan coup, none of these are things.

Corruption in Ukraine is a very complex topic, related especially to pre-2014 Russian corruption in Ukraine. It's a problem that takes a long time to address. And the CIA claims are absollute nonsense. And money laundering happens in many countries.

US-funded biolabs on Russia's border are another non-thing.

More disinformation from Russia, obviously. All countries have labs. All of these labs are relatively harmless. Really stupid to assume that you know what's happening in a lab, unless you have direct evidence.

The Democrats' insane Russiagate hoax, rejecting Putin's overtures and throwing them back in his face for decades, our use of Nazi catspaws against his country, NOT THINGS.

Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections has been proven many times. WTF.

Doesn't make any sense.

a brigade ensued, and a lot of people left very unhappy and upset while they pretended they were LEEROOOOY MMJENNKINSSSS!!!!

No - not at all what happened.

10 Saiditors commented on the turtle tax, and 3 Saiditors were particularly annoyed, noting how insulting it is and how moderators apply it for obviously frivolous reasons, to attack people who disagree with the WatB hive mind, and the shelled users assume it's a permanent penalty, and thus shelled users do one of two things:

1) Leave (because they don't want to be insulted with the 'I like turtles' tag that identifies them as hated users)

2) Stay on WatB because they have absolutely no self respect.

As we've discussed at length, Inuma, the standard practice is a temporary ban (noting a week or a month), rather than this permanent shelling insult against a user who merely does not agree. (Yes, you note that it's not permanent, but the new user who is shelled is not told that (another example of very bad management). WatB has dwindled from 90,000 subscribers to Saidit's 45 WatB subscribers, half of which are active, partially because of these insults, and also because WatB is mostly devoted to spreading misinformation, as we've seen for years.) Hope this brings people up to date. There was no brigading, by any stretch of the imagination.

It was never meant to be an identifying mark, although some do treat it that way -- it is merely an extra requirement on "certain people."

I doubt this intention matters to 'shelled' users. The result is not dissimilar to this

I explained this earlier, and won't explain it again. Essentially, I was at the sub for the period in which it was about this:

not a Bernie Sanders sub but it strives to emulate his WAY of building coalitions with political opponents on those issues where agreement can be found.

I don't know if anyone was 'shelled' at that time.

Within a year or two of the sub's creation it was hijacked by the right-wing misinformation one still sees today. I unsubscribed at that time. The quote above has been entirely untelated to WatB.

Also not in the side panel - or at least I don't see it there. The persistence with this issue - that visitors should automatically, magically understand WatB's unusual shell rules and whatever - indicates to me that those arguing with me about this have some form of autism. If WatB is not explicit regarding shell or ban requirements, they have no argument when shelled users complain.

I'm also not claiming this is a big deal. I'm merely pointing out the problems, and getting a lot of false responses (like yours in this case) that I've had to respond to.

I've been a Reddit WotB member for years - since the time Bernie campaigned (I helped him) - and still knew nothing of the turtle tax, types of bans, inside jokes, what's considered 'dickish' particularly at WatB, &c. A couple years ago I unsubscribed because it had been overrun with misinformation that's spread by the right and/or the 1% perhaps 4 years go. There have been some concerns on the sub that relate to Bernie. And I know that Trump's PR fooled people into believing that he was an outsider, somewhat like Bernie, and thus many Bernie voters were fooled into voting for Trump (who helped push the GOP agenda, as their puppet, harder than ever. I and others knew Bernie was unelecable after the DNC did not support him, and then Hillary failed to campaign properly, while also worrying potential voters. Trump got the anti-abortion vote, which was arguably the main message that turned Christo-fascist voters in his favor. But I digress.) Anyhow: I've visited WatB for years and didn't know what I've learned in the past few days about the sub.

Yes - it's expected to be permanent to anyone who gets the notice; and for the long period thereafter, the automoderator ban remains active, with absolutely no indication of a reversal of that turtle tax.

I'm seeing a major trend at WatB that many of the regular users don't want visitors to undertand WatB's approaches.

I know you're joking, but - if I may - for the others:

TEMPORARY bans for REPEATED dickish behaviour is at issue, not permanent bans for a few comments. (That's giving someone a second chance to be less dickish.)

This is better than the insulting, permanent 'I like turtles' tag on unpopular visitors who had no idea they would have to be self-tagged in this manner because they did not agree with other users in this echo chamber. (This just gets rid of people who have some sembance of self-respect and would rather not self-tag themselves with 'I like turtles' in order to have a conversation, which automatically prohibits mutual respect in a free speech discourse.)

Why focus on Biden? Have you ever played chess? Even a pawn can be very important in the game. There are numerous candidates to consider, many of whom need donations and other forms of support, and some of whom are arguably worthy for the job as politician. Step 1: elect new people and get the old ones out. Biden will be the only option if Trump or DeSantis are nominated - its that simple. You can predict now that the DNC will nominate Biden. So, move on, look at other candidates. Work with what's available. Help with the strataegy for your favorite candidates. Because you're in a blue state, your options are of course limited, but I'd argue that you have good Dems to choose from. Replace Pelosi, already, ffs. Discuss this stuff. the 'Democracy bad' argument id dumbing down the discourse. No, we are not powerless. No, voting for a good candidate is not boot licking. Focusing on who will be president is stupid. Focus on congress. They've been the dangerous ones. They corrupted the Supreme Court. They gave themselves and their friends massive handouts while cutting services. They're the ones threatening to cut school lunches for poor kids. They want to use YOUR Social Security money for their tax breaks. They want to kill healthcare, women's rights, education, democracy, minimum wage, worker's rights, unions, the environment, etc, etc. Don't support those assholes. Elect new, more competent assholes. NO, elections are not like a toy steering wheel for babies. Seriously

the lack of democraticness in our democracy

Yes - it sucks. We can agree it sucks. We can march in the streets and complain about it. Happy to do so.

What I think most readers are seeing here is an anti-democracy message, in general.

Here's the rub: since the start of democracies in ancient Greece there have been ways of criticizing approaches to all of them. They all have had problems. Not everyone is fairly represented in most democracies, historically.

Her article fits a series of anti-democracy complaints, especially from those who want voters to avoid voting or to throw their votes away on RFK Jr. or similar.

Her article would be much more appreciated if it noted something useful, something she recommends for the voter, something that will work in the US for most voters. I have a few ideas, but you've likely read them.

We would want solutions to the problems in the very limited democracy in the US government: "a federal republic and a representative democracy with three separate branches of government. It has a bicameral national legislature composed of the House of Representatives, a lower house; and the Senate, an upper house based on equal representation for each state."

I think we have to work with what we have.
