You know, this comment has entered my mind a lot since I read it 24 hours ago.

The media machine is doing simulated annealing on what narratives the public can support, both in a computational-simulated way, but also in a try-and-see way.

But also the public is doing the same, collectively honing their own narrative, seeing what sticks and what doesn't.

This is really what information warfare is about, and both sides are ramping up their information weapons and emotional weapons, to try and control the minds of others, to drive the world in the direction they think is best. Everyone is trying to do it simultaneously, and it's also the mechanism by which we collectively develop culture

Thanks for the thought-provoking comment

Media is in full divide-and-conquer mode because people were unifying about police misconduct.

The divide-and-conquer propaganda is unsurprisingly very painful to read, because it promotes feelings of alienation, and separation from your fellow man.

Just ignore the lies, even though there are so many. Just build something useful and meaningful, and ignore those trying to sway you in to failure so that they may win

I think when we're younger we just think we're good at spotting sarcasm because we're so confident in our world view. But in reality as we age we see the many shades of gray and how ambiguous many things really are, and how many different opinions people truly hold. I think that's what makes it so hard. It's not that our abilities have gotten worse, but actually that they've gotten better. We understand a broader variety of perspectives, so we can empathize with all the various viewpoints more easily.

“There’s a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.” Admiral William Adama by EndlessSunflowers in quotes

Even the Supreme Court said that "protect and serve" was just a meaningless slogan they weren't beholden to in any way.

This all boils down to justice for police. We have very harsh justice in this country, unless you are rich or police. Police shouldn't be exempt from law because that means eventually corruption will become systemic in those supposed to enforce the law.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised at how slow it's been. I expected them to pull a digg.com like 2-3 years ago.

But the fact they're driven by greed and money has become more than clear, so the removal of information that might threaten that income stream was always inevitable. That's basically the whole reason I knew saidit would probably work when d3rr and I first started making it. These waves of refugees will just keep coming and coming, until one day reddit is mostly empty. It honestly seems inevitable, given the lifecycle of previous websites like digg.com, myspace, xanga, etc. The harder they try to monetize, the quicker they unintentionally choke out their userbase by trying to control the information. And they only want to control the information in unreasonable ways because it affects their income.

This is one big reason saidit is run by donations and not advertisements, and why we focus so much on keeping our operating costs down. If we can avoid the bad incentives created by monetary desires, then saidit might have a true shot at being a place of real information exchange. It's working so far!

Just from interacting with them online for years, they're mostly 14-20 year old white guys who have become so extreme left they think communism is the perfect ideal, and don't really know about Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin, and the other communist regimes, or don't consider them "real communism" and think their revolution to put power in to the hands of new authoritarians will go more smoothly.

They're people with a lot of gusto but not much of a historical perspective. People who use guilt and shame of others to justify their misdeeds.

You draw the line when you feel that the argument is being presented in bad faith.

I agree that's one way to draw the line, but there's also idiots who argue very stupid things in good faith. And those things often don't deserve deep consideration either, or else you'll spend your life arguing with idiots about nonsense, even if it is in good faith. So there needs to be an additional rule than just the bad faith rule, imo.

You wouldn't believe how many negative connotations I read into your post simply because our messages here are text based.

Oh I totally agree, it happens constantly. I write my messages with the assumption that whatever I write will be misunderstood, if it is possible to misunderstand. Then I try to word things in a way to avoid any misunderstandings. Even just using the wrong phrase can trigger an emotional reaction in people that then closes them off to logic. And this mechanism just feeds tribalism, like you said.

You actually think it's okay that they shoot Americans on their own property, who aren't breaking the curfew law, just because someone barked an order? Wow, sad. Do you know what constitutional rights are?

Also if someone breaks the curfew law, they're supposed to get a ticket according to the law, not shot by a thug. So they broke their own new law, twice. And then you blame the victims and call them stupid? Wow

Yeah the national guard was litearlly right there in the same caravan, yet they didn't stop the police from acting like this. That's tacit approval, where's the accountability?

Since 2015, the number of unarmed black men being killed by police has fallen below 10 per year. More police officers are killed by blacks than unarmed blacks killed by police officers in 2018 and 2019. by muellermeierschulz in deutsch

Yes it is shameful that the US is closer to Brazil than Germany. Even if you adjust per-capita, it's probably still true.

The Franc in Africa is interesting, so many countries share the same currency there.

Also surprising to me is British East Africa. Some call it the "shilling" and some call it the "pound".

It's also etymologically interesting that the word "shilling" comes from the Old Norse, meaning "division" according to the map. And that's interesting because that's what online shills do today is divide people.

Still killing about 1000 people a year though, and 50% are white too, so it's not like this only affects black people.

In Germany the police kill about 0.3 a year on average. In the UK it's about 1 a year. In the US it's 1000. One every 8 hours

I'd be fine with that, sounds like a good solution. I guess it doesn't need to be on our main server, probably for the better it's not, now that you mention it.

Can it not share a server with one of our lowest-used servers though? Surely one of the two cheap ones we have could also handle the nab mirroring software in addition to what it's already doing? Or maybe we could test that out before we go disabling any existing features?

Like maybe we could put it on the IRC server, get nab running, and then turn the IRC back on to see if it can handle both? That'd save us $5/mo, which is $60/year so might be worth it

Oh it's fine, we all are just doing the best with what we have at the moment. It's perfectly fine that new info comes along, that's what the comment threads are for! Other people can then trace the progression of the ideas, and that's very useful for learning.

Police. It's a patrol with national guard at the front, police in the back. The Minneapolis police in the back are the ones who fired the rubber bullets and were acting crazy. Yet the national guard didn't step in to calm them down either...

The police are the ones who did the shooting. The national guard was up ahead in the humvee, and wasn't shooting at people. However they didn't exactly stop the police though...
