Heh yeah pirates or even government-paid pirates! Probably more secure in one the countries. I actually did ask people's opinion here, but no one responded.

I guess I could make a dedicated post about it, I'll probably do that tomorrow or soon.

Haha oh. No worries. I think there are still offshore options, but yeah it's probably best anyway to do something a little more protected and less random.

Although the idea of running a server farm on a boat powered by solar or a generator in international waters does sound like kind of an amusing business model, haha.

So I'm basically between Switzerland and Norway then. They are both the same price so it's basically down to which we think is better for the longevity and safety of saidit. I lean towards Switzerland, but I guess it feels a tiny bit like "feeding the beast" to have it there, because it's the storehouse of the money of the hyper-wealthy. And we might get slightly better ping in Norway because it's slightly physically closer to the US. Both seem quite secure from a government intervention standpoint. What do you think? It's basically a coin flip as far as I can tell. Unless you can find any compelling news stories about Swiss or Norwegian servers being taken down by governmental action

Yeah it's basically between Switzerland and Norway. And also off-shore is another option, in international waters. That's also the same price as Switzerland and Norway. It's a new option I just learned about recently. It might be good because there's no government, but that might also make it weak as well, if there's literal pirates that hijack the offshore rig the servers are on. But from a legal perspective it's probably the most free, but in some ways that makes it more vulnerable to outside influence instead of being protected. But an offshore rig would probably have better ping to America, where most of our users are.

But it's looking like probably Switzerland or Norway. Still thinking it over though and considering options.

Yeah it does. It's where the elite hide all their money so it makes sense it'd have super-strict and unbreakable security laws, haha.

Also Iceland was another good alternative, they take data security seriously and you know the country is in the hands of their people because they just had a revolution to re-write their constitution in 2009. But the servers there are 5-10x as expensive as Norway and Switzerland, so it's not a competitive option unfortunately.

Yes it definitely matters. It's very hard for them to shut down a server in switzerland, they have very intense privacy laws and the swiss government doesn't let the US government or other governments do stuff willy-nilly to data hosted physically in their country

The government pushed hard to get that removed from as much sites as possible.

Not in the US, where our servers are. And we might soon move them to switzerland or norway or something, which is even more safe

Those are the subreddit-specific rules. The only way to prevent that sort of stuff is by having site-wide rules against sub moderator rules

I don't want to have to moderate tons of porn, and I don't want people to be able to post illegal porn to be able to shut down saidit. Porn is one of the few pieces of content that can can be used to shut down the site. It's also everywhere for anyone who wants it so there's absolutely no shortage of it, it's probably the least shortage of any information on the internet. So we don't need it.

Thanks wizzwizz.

I appreciate you all who are being real and honest and well-spoken, and responding to the real core of what your debate "opponent" is saying when you get in a disagreement.

I've already seen some great debates happening on saidit where all the different sides of an argument were being stated very clearly and articulately, and it's amazing how much I can quickly learn! This is what saidit is for.

Sometimes we'll get steamed when we disagree with someone, but only engaging with the highest-quality arguments makes the culture of mud-slinging just naturally die out from people simply ignoring it because we know it's not worth our time.

It's a subtle thing to truly grasp, but I see lots and lots of people on saidit who "get it" and I'm proud of the community we've all built so far.

OP is wrong because that stuff bleeds over in to the front page and affects the culture and the way people behave on the site. There's just no reason to have it around. It brings almost only negatives, and very few positives.

It should be allowed on the grounds that the sub moderator ensures the content remains within the 18+ range.

I don't want to spend all day keeping track of this and looking at porn, or keeping track of mods who have to do this. Also there is plenty of porn elsewhere on the internet. The internet is like half porn. Saidit is fine without it. It doesn't add anything valuable to the community, and in fact detracts in many ways.

It also makes perfect sense to not allow porn because it can easily be abused as an entry point to cause federal agencies to gain access to saidit, or shut down saidit. It is a tactical decision.

There are plenty of other sites that will cater to your porn needs, but saidit is not one of them.

You can talk to /u/JasonCarswell, he designed the CSS for that sub so you can take inspiration from his design.

Having a native upload function would be interesting, but would also demand a much beefier and more expensive server. We'll explore it as an option and think about it. Thanks for the idea.

I think just to keep driving that wedge in deeper. Divide and conquer keeps people fighting each other instead of fighting the establishment ruling over them.

It's why subreddits like /r/enligtenedcentrism exist, where they basically make fun of anyone who is not a liberal extremist. And they've poisoned the phrase "both sides" by associating it with reactionary idiocy.

The goal now is to get rid of all the moderates, so only extremists exist anymore. Then it's much easier to run the re-election numbers because you're much more certain of how everyone is going to vote.

Basically, they want control. And the good way to get it is by controlling the minds of others, and the best way to do that is to destroy any moderates and any moderate conversations. Thus from the naive standpoint, the options seem to become "literally nazis, or the sane people". And of course then the latter is the obvious choice. They want everyone thinking like this.

And everyone who refuses to think like this, will now become "the bad guys who are shunned by society". And things just keep polarizing.

Noam Chomsky calling out Christian Zionism in the US as the main reason the US supports Israel by magnora7 in WorldPolitics

[–]magnora7[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah I would be surprised if Christian Zionism is older the Jewish Zionism. I guess you could maybe argue it in the sense that Zionism didn't really have any power until the Christian monarchy of England approved it and began backing it and funding it. But still the ideology of modern Zionism originates from the Rothschilds in the 1800s as you say. But it also has roots that go way back thousands of years, they just revived it and put money and power behind it.

Similar to the Knights Templar. They were a huge organization in the 1200s, then basically died out. Then someone in the 1800s brought back the name as a secret fraternal organization, but it's not really related to the original organization. I think you could perhaps make a similar argument about Zionism, and maybe that's what he means about modern Zionism having Christian roots. Kind of still a bit strangely worded though on his part, I don't know
