Yep. Some might have a niggling feeling that something is untrue or wrong, or secretly resent they’re being fed bullshit (as I did when I majored in a social science in the 90s, during what I thought was peak POMO). But then they’ll worry about grades - and now probably, excommunication from society - so they’ll have to keep quiet or change majors.

My brother (in his early 40s) recently flipped on our mom, as apparently he was a “latch-key kid”. Our mom had a career in healthcare. She loved her work, which paid for us to live (very well by the way). If she wasn’t home, an aunt or uncle or babysitter or parent was, total fabrication

when we were kids, she was late for dinner once or twice and hadn’t gone shopping (probably made up for it with pizza). Apparently my brother starved of neglect. (No chance)

She missed a baseball practice or two (likely there was an emergency); my brother was again “neglected”. Bullshit, she was there every Saturday, for his practice AND the other brother’s.

And yes, we hung out with kids in the neighborhood (did also have structured extracurricular activities), and our mom had friends. God forbid.

She didn’t stare at us every minute like he and his (younger) girlfriend do with their kid, which they can do thanks to their unemployment. He thinks he’s the pinnacle of parenting, and his girlfriend, who didn’t finish highschool, is the world’s best mother, because she bakes.

He actually tore into our 70 y/o mother with these pathetic and ridiculous lies, which he sincerely believes. I have no words for this person.

She asked him to get out.

He called her the next week wanting her “advice” on a ring for his girlfriend. No apology.

AND, he blackmails her with his kids.

Fucking tool. He’s very stupid and silly, and of course he’s reproducing.

I read the BM in the early 90s, haven’t since. I think probably it was the original! I remember thinking (about the book overall), “superficial, we all know this (much of it), but good to have out there”.

Vagina for men... wow. No integrity at all. Unless she’s terrified which is possible.

Depends on what the goal should be.

If we want to maintain the existing system, guaranteed minimum income since automation and free trade are tearing reams out of the workforce.

With so many people out of work though, I don’t see how women in their 50s can beat out hungry young hustlers who will stay late, work for peanuts - put up with all kinds of exploitative practice - and really believe whatever company “mission”.

Fact is anyone of either sex over 50 has to be jaded AF. I am and so is everyone I know, all my friends (early 40s) don’t GAF and basically want to retire. We have all seen and experienced too much bullshit to care anymore. Sorry to say it, but it’s true.

Micromanagers, narcissistic bosses with terrible ideas, the fucking men-children who steal your shit, backstabbers, annoying clients/customers/patients/parents/you name it.... who wants it. Who can even pretend to want it. Especially now when companies are supposed to be like families and steal your leisure time, gross.

Other than that there’s revolution which I guess might actually occur.

Same generation, also find it mind blowing

However the feminine ideal of the 90s was Kate Moss (anorexia wasn’t like a small issue) while now it’s Kardashian style - fake eyes, fake nose, fake ass, fake hair, corset, walking around in full stage makeup during the day; being expected to have zero pubic hair; being asked to have anal sex on a first date as a freaking fifteen year old, being CHOKED during sex, at ALL... instagram bullshit everywhere, that alone has to be a terrifying weight to carry.

On top of the forms of sexism we know. By which I mean experiencing the effects of sexism without necessarily being able to name it (because suddenly that’s not allowed). Because young people also have a HEAVY optimism and just world bias because they want to feel empowered (developmentally normal, fine), and want to dissociate from the older “terfs” (or “Karens” even) because being part of that team means being unsexy or dated. And really they all want approval and acceptance so eff that, right.

(A young libfem tourist here said I was a “victim” and “dated” for saying that makeup isn’t empowering. Girl is going to find out about the world by the time she’s 40. I saw sexism before then, but That’s how long it took me to REALLY work to shake off that desire for societal / male approval and be ok with not looking cute most of the time. And I grew up in the 90s, without all that porny shit infecting my romantic life and self concept.)

But I think the idea of stereotypes being limiting might reach them? Idk. I honestly don’t know how it couldn’t

I think people who have detransitioned are more threatening to the trans movement. Their existence destabilizes the TRA narrative (of self identification specifically, and just the whole logic of their rhetoric). If people are being transitioned who shouldn’t be, then obviously there needs to be more and better controls and screening over transition - and they don’t want that. It puts their whole MO into question. That’s why research on detransition has been quashed, it’s too dangerous.

Our logic and rationale are discounted off the bat because of sexism. They’ve painted us as a hate group, that’s all they have to do to dismiss us since callout culture emerged (and since mutually respectful platforms for debate basically don’t exist anymore).

The TRA PR campaign against actual feminists (and women) is accepted by mainstream leftism as the correct view. We’re labelled as hateful, we’re seen as having privilege. Whereas detransitioners are evidently sympathetic, being I guess one could say the underdog, I mean it’d be obviously punching down for anyone to criticize them as a group.

That’s amazing, you magically escaped the part of misogynist culture that objectifies women and says heels (which podiatrists universally agree are debilitating) are sexy and completely randomly chose to wear heels and do burlesque

That’s some special magic

Look we have to be willing to look critically at our own practices. You can wear heels and do burlesque but it’s denial and bad faith to pretend you somehow chose to do those things in a cultural vacuum absent of pressure.

Until COVID I wore makeup sometimes. However I was under no illusion that it was a free choice (free of pressure or consequences).

Wear a skirt, wear makeup if you want to - I’m not policing that. I am asking you to question the social context of those actions (more so the makeup tbh).

I’ve been a feminist for YEARS and wore at least some makeup all that time (with the awareness of what it does and is, I mean I didn’t lie to myself about it being a free choice). It took freaking COVID to get me to stop entirely. I might still wear it, if I feel like not wearing it would make life harder in a small but important way (Eg interview).

Collective action matters more than whether someone wears eyeliner, in my opinion, but not everything a woman does is feminist just because a woman does it.

Makeup could be neutral in an alternate universe where either a) men in whatever class of work we’re ALSO punished or even fired for not wearing makeup, b) men were actively encouraged to wear makeup at a rate equal to women, or c) no one was particularly targeted by a culture wrt makeup.

Since none of those is true and since actually what happens instead is that girls and women are inundated with images of women being objectified through makeup, in all media, from birth on, and since women are defined in our culture primarily as vehicles of access to sex, and since women are dehumanized on this basis, and since makeup mystifies similarity and justifies dehumanization, even if your mother (and mine fwiw) didn’t wear makeup, yeah no it’s not neutral.

Yes it’s a trap - but I think we can still disagree with a practice in principle, while having empathy for women figuring their own shit out in relation to it. Or figuring it out ourselves. At the same time, trying to see things as clearly as possible given material conditions.

Same thing as when we look at porn or sex work. No hate for women entangled in it - empathy for them, criticism of the system.

And we can look at one issue at a time and be complicated and imperfect and still at least aim to be consistent.

None of us is perfect, doesn’t mean we can’t recognize reality. See being a straight woman in a relationship (most comparable to the OP viz a viz social ties, family etc) or wearing makeup etc.

Saying “hey what about Western society!” doesn’t answer the question around veiling specifically. We can discuss Western sexual objectification another time.

As far as veiling, there’s no universe in which it will make sense to me that women and their level of hair exposure are responsible for men’s moral failings.

That said obviously if someone’s feeling pressured to veil (or is punished re veiling), one of course understands.
