What exactly happened to Ruqqus, what other saidit-like sites are out there?

Initially I thought of making my forums on Ruqqus as it had a lot more users than Saidit but when I finally got to it I found out the site is dead. Anyone know what exactly happened and when? Also, what other saidit like sites are out there, just so we can have a couple backups in case this one goes down too? You know, decentralization and all that. Not putting all eggs in one basket.

The ruqqus drama went down shortly after r/MGTOW was banned from Reddit. The influx onto ruqqus ended up being a bit unpalatable and they too were banned. This caused a lot of infighting which rapidly led to ruqqus being shut down.

Notabug.io is another nice alternative, though the person who manages the DNS here usually forwards traffic to r/saiditnet in the event of an outage.

I dunno about Notabug.io, it seems both primitive and confusing at the same time. And kinda desolate (even more so than saidit). Can you make your own communities/subs there? And like... how does it really work? What's its use case?

    I'm looking for something else than saidit to have a backup. If I'm going to put any effort into stuff, I just want to have an illusion of safety. Tho I'll probably shill my sub on a couple of places on reddit, I think there can be a few people who'd want to go there.

The ssl certs are still regularly updated, bots that censor offensive speech still work, submissions are still clearly oriented toward a certain objective, real users still post content every day, and the server is still regularly restarted. Did you have evidence to support your claim?

    There have certainly been efforts to disrupt the website. Have they been successful? No, their schemes are clearly seen through. They are incentivized to destroy the website, whether it is to use it as a surrogate for their own fork, or to protect the individuals responsible for the events that have taken place there in the past year, I know not.

    The last time I checked, the front page was full of garbage, all of which had been upvoted to 111 or thereabouts. When I made a post pointing this out, several accounts told me to fuck off and one actual account said that the creator was known to abandon the site for months at a time and that I shouldn't expect anything better. I left after that.

    I'm not sure what your definition of garbage is but I hardly think that a smattering of varied articles -- not all of which are political -- is it. The content doesn't change as quickly as on saiddit, for example, but it is generally fresh enough that I visit once a day. If there's anything to complain about it's the dearth of comments. As of writing there's not a single post on the FP that's higher than 40.

    I'm not saying notabug is great. In fact it's rather weak cheese. But it's not garbage either.

Perhaps it's rather crude as a description, but I am not seeing anything other than misinformation at that website. I don't see anything redeemable in the spreading of misinformation.

      Ruqqus leadership was subverted by discord trannies that convinced them to hate their own user base and start manually curating the front page, among other retarded ideas that no one asked for and often vocally opposed. This created a feedback loop of them doing things to seemingly intentionally alienate their users so they could then go in some private discord channels and laugh about everyone being idiots and not liking their big brained changes. Eventually they decided they didn’t want to admin the site anymore, but instead of handing the keys to people who did they chose to burn it to the ground instead. They had a side plan to continue developing the Ruqqus software as a FOSS project, but they couldn’t even do that right and deleted the idea of guilds entirely from it making it absolutely worthless for anyone wanting to make their own online community. No idea what happened to the admins after that, but I like to imagine that the second they deleted Ruqqus they got banned and blocked by their tranny discord “friends” and finally realized that they’d been played. Retards.

      Basically ruqqus said: “this platform is for freedom of speech”. And then they started banning people. Then all of us on ruqqus didn’t do anything but shit post. And then we all jumped ship. Now they divided us up into several different websites.

      I think Saidit is the best among them all. But I don’t think the majority thinks that. I shit on said it a lot. I’m just waiting for them to start banning me. And then I guess I’ll have to go live in the real world.

      I used Ruqqus primarily after I left Reddit. I liked it a lot, but then the site admins went full Reddit and started banning users and subs without warning or explanation. That caused a bunch of users to leave and killed the momentum they had.

      After that, I'm not sure what happened. I stayed on until they shutdown. I heard some rumors that said they'd been pressured to shutdown over their politics. Some suggested it was because they ran out of money. Some said they site runners just realized it was going to be a lot more work and more risk than they wanted to accept.

      Trolls on Reddit like to pretend that the site just got "overrun with Nazis" and that's what killed it. And while there definitely were a few of those kinds of people, those were the minority from my experience, and they were easy for me to block.

      I think the site was just an experiment that they lost interest in. However, the code for the site is open source, and a couple other sites are using it to host forums.

      Currently, other than Saidit, which is probably my main news aggregator, I like Gab.com and Communities.win.

        FWIW, I think Saidit is still too small to really attract the ire of the twit patrol. They know about us, and they think we're a bunch of nazis because we value discourse, but there are bigger fish to fry that will land them a lot more virtue points than some little Reddit clone that nobody's heard of.

        Ruqqus looked pretty promising when it started up. For one thing the interface was easily the best of all of the so-called Reddit clones I'd tried. But also, and more important, it claimed that is was all about Free Speech. Looks good, sign me up.

        But right off the bat you couldn't enter certain words in comments. I forget what I was commenting on but the forbidden word was probably nigger or something similarly 'incorrect'. The point being that the site was restricting speech right from day one AKA right speech is what we say it is. I'm all for a certain degree of moderation, because otherwise the place can turn into a fucking zoo for anyone trying to have serious discussions. But it's a thin line to walk and not easy at all to execute well.

        I hung around for a month or so just out of curiosity but the place just got lamer and lamer. At there start there were some good posts and comments, but any illusion of edginess and "this is a reflection of the real world" went away pretty fast.

        Apparently there was a lot of drama behind the scenes but I wasn't interested so didn't bother to try and get involved. When Ruqqus closed down it was no surprise.

        Reddit gets away with claiming to be for free speech but then moderating the fuck out of the place only because it's been around forever and has fostered a huge user base that supports that shit. Any site that wants to start today with the same approach is going to die long before it is large enough and perverted enough to be self sustaining.

        A place like notabug generally has good content. But if you say anything that goes against the group think you'll be downvoted to invisibility pretty fast so you know where the community in general stands. But at least the moderators don't get involved. So I don't bother to comment on posts on notabug, but I can still enjoy the content.

        Notabug doesn't have many groupthink issues, someone made a bot to downvote every post but their own until it's sunk to the bottom. And every time it gets upvotes, the bot downvotes it more.

        Just as I predicted, the admins' special discord clique became a cabal and they started acting like reddit. By August they banned a bunch of guilds, then explicitly denounced free speech, then deleted everything when everyone obviously didn't take it too well.
