Mischpoke, also Mischpoche, Meschpoke or Muschpoke, is a Yiddish term based on the Hebrew מִשְׁפָּחָה ([miʃpa'χa] 'family') meaning 'family, society, kinship', which was adopted in the early 19th century in the pejorative meaning 'riffraff, gang of thieves'. Century in the pejorative meaning 'riffraff, gang of thieves' was adopted into the German colloquial language.While the term is used in Yiddish value-neutral, the word in German often has a pejorative meaning. The Duden, which adopted the term in 1941, today defines Mischpoke as casually pejorative meaning "someone's family, kin" and "nasty company, group of unpleasant people".
