This is such a brave and wonderful show.
Of all the fantastical and thrilling elements in it, like wizards and monsters and a 3000 year old matriarchal power dynasty ruling over a dystopian wasteland caused by men, the most spectacular was the fact that everyone everywhere is comprised of the exact racial diversity of the audience that might watch this show in modern day America.
I am so sick and tired of lame old "logical" fantasy stories where towns full of largely sedentary people form families, interbreed and then look more or less like each other. If I wanted to learn about science I'd read a book! It's about time we see a show where the population of every town is 50% Caucasian, 50% African, 50% Asian, 50% Hispanic, 50% Indian and 50% whatever else I missed. How is that even mathematically possible, you might ask? Well, that's racist of you to even ask, and you're now on a list.
It's also refreshing to see a show with zero strong male leads. I'm so bored of men showing initiative and "protecting" people of their own accord. Who gave them the right? There are only two types of male characters in this show. Servants and evildoers. Just like in real life, men are only allowed to be strong and fight if they're following orders of their superior female masters. Only two male characters are shown foolishly standing up to their brave and wonderful rulers. One is a murderous psychopath who's a stick-figure stand-in for Christians (boo! hiss!) and the other wants to create world peace by being a murderous psychopath by using magics only the women are allowed to use. Show those dumb men their place, ladies!
Another thing I love about this show is how every one is literally gay. Let me just say. It's. About. Time. How am I supposed to know that being gay isn't a choice if Hollywood isn't showing, in very explicit pornographic detail, how literally everyone is gay? Even the characters who are mostly straight have to admit that they're a little gay, tried it a few times, and liked it. I wish I could teach myself how to be gay by watching this show 24/7, but sadly, I had to stop to write this review.
Now let's talk about the writing. I had to save the best for last. The writing is probably the best thing about the show. Look out Shakespeare, there's a new game in town! A rose by any other name wouldn't be as awesome as the writers of this show are!
You never know what any character is going to do or say. One moment they're saying something completely reasonable. Next, they're whining like a high school kid in a cheesy soap opera because the chick they slept with yesterday doesn't want to hold hands. One moment they're being very cautious in the face of extreme danger. Next, they're playing around with enchanted death dangers that can destroy entire cities. One moment two characters are the best of friends, telling each other they'll be there for each other, no matter what. Next, they're telling each other they hate them because reasons...which will be completely forgotten about by the next scene. It's a roller-coaster of fun! At least, I think it's fun. Watching this show makes me nauseous, but I assume that's just my frail body not being able to handle all the fun.
At first, I thought my 6 year old sister was secretly a writer for this show, but after extensive interrogation, I've determined she had nothing to do with it.
Overall, I can't recommend this show enough. If you want a clever, intelligently written show set in a novel fantasy world full of thrills and fun...well, go back and read Lord of the Rings for the 20th time you loser. If you want a derivative uninspired story about how Hollywood wants you to act and behave, then look no further.
