I loved Pippi Longstocking when I was little! It'd be cool to include books for all ages

Island of the Blue Dolphins might also be good for kids.

I read almost no books with girls because I was very male-identified as a child, but I had to read this one for school and remember the girl character being strong and independent.

Yes, it was a Disney movie, came out in 1964. They used to have the entire movie available for free on youtube, but I don't see it any more, only trailers and whatnot.
