Look, Emma Watson maybe one of the most privileged women, and she may spout some tone-deaf platitudes, but she's still suffered plenty of misogyny herself. I remember reading about how when she was still a child the paparazzi used to sexualise her, how a Peodophile was caught having photoshopped her face into pictures of child porn, how she couldn't leave the house on her 18th birthday because press were lying in her front garden because taking an up-skirt picture of her had suddenly become legal. I'm not saying we shouldn't critique her wishy-washy brand of liberal feminism (and her effective stabbing in the back of JK, the woman who made her) but let's not make fun of her or pretend she hasn't suffered from sexism herself. We're only hurting ourselves at that point.

Her having experienced sexism is no excuse for all her nonsense. Her not being able to leave her house on her 18th birthday is the kind of things that has happened to all child stars and celebrity regardless of male or female so that's not sexism. Same with Pedophiles photoshopping.

She's a full-grown adult now. If she has suffered sexism, but still she's going to keep up her blind contribution to more discrimination and sufferings of women less fortunate than her, then I can make fun of her for her moronic handmaidenry and wokeness. God forbid she gets made fun of. OMG did we hurt her feelings? Let us not forget to coddle millionaire handmaidens in case their fragile feelings get hurt.

But more likely she wouldn't give a shit what people are saying here. And she doesn't have to either because she's privileged enough to never have to care.

This. If you suffering sexism, that does not give you right to apply sexism on others. Same argument goes with transgender rapists, they are justified by news outlets because they were sexually abused. No. It is not how that works.

We shouldn't pretend Watson herself is out ally in any way, either. The awfulness she endured is inexusable, but you'll find that the women here are more readily able to comprehend that.

Watson IS rich and famous with a large fanbase and the things that she says have consequences. We can respect women without pretending they are in any way helping us.

Be a hooker. Or be a homemaker. Or be whatever. Blah, blah, blah feminism is about choice!

Choice-y choice "do whatever you want" feminism is bullshit. Many women don't have a whole lot of the choices open to men. It's an illusion of choice.

Here's the article to cite Ms. Watson's quote: https://unherd.com/thepost/emma-watsons-neoliberal-nonsense/

Once again the religion of "Empower," as the refuge of the dis-empowered. Even celebs cite it, because when rattled, they lose their cool, and fire psycho-babble cliches right from the hip. So, "don't shave your armpits," "run for M-P" and see what I care.

Now as you said it like that, I am finding big simularities in (neo) liberal feminism and "american dream". When people are fighting for few to become millionaires at the expense of everyone else, and giving up their own rights, just in hope that one day they will be one of those millionaries. Same with neo liberal feminism, "every women fight for herself, and we will go over their heads to be one of those few empowered women in power".

We want to empower women to do whatever they want, but please do not say you are a natal female, that is anti trans and is just going too far....in fact it is transphobic!!!!

It’s also empowering to use western European women to sell skin whitening cream to women in Asia, apparently.
