Almost immediately after the big march, the hats became deemed offensive. Why? Because 'not all women have vaginas omg' and also brown people don't have pink pussys (never mind that the color was symbolic of femininity, not literal vulvas).

One of the confounding things about this is that the meaning of "pussy" in this context was never clear. "Pussy" seems like an all-purpose slur for female genitals, and is used to mean either vulva or vagina, or both at once.

I always thought "pussy" meant a post-pubescent vulva, coz vulvas are soft and furry and many liked to stroke and nuzzle them the way we're naturally drawn to do with kittens and cats. But then I'm from an older generation to whom the idea of women removing our pubic hair so our mons and vulvas would look pre-pubescent was and is anathema. So I'm clearly way out of date! I realize that in popular imagination and common presentation nowadays, post-pubescent vulvas are no longer customarily furry.

Also, it seems that in recent years, the way even women talk about our own anatomy has become less precise. Nowadays, it's become common for younger generations to use the word vagina when they mean vulva alone, or when they mean women's genitals generally. For many people, "vagina" has been divorced from meaning a specific part of female anatomy and instead has become a vague catchall term akin to terms like "privates" or "the down there" used in the past.

To make matters worse, many of the TIMs who took over the women's march and have appropriated and redefined "feminism" clearly have absolutely no clue that the vagina is an internal organ separate from the vulva. Nor are they aware that the vulva has many separate parts including the labia, clitoris and urethra.

Prior to the second women's march in 2018, famous UK TRA Munroe Bergdorf, who was a London leader of the second women's march, famously tweeted to tell women not to "center reproductive systems," and particularly not female repro systems, in feminism coz that's "exclusionary" and not "intersectional." Then he informed the world that "not all vaginas are pink" - showing he had no idea all girls & women's vaginas are inside our bodies and they indeed all are the same pinkish color, no matter what our race, skin pigmentation, ethnicity, age etc.

Similarly, after Jazz Jennings had his first genital surgery he kept talking on his TV show about "peeing from my vagina," clearly showing that he'd never bothered to learn the basics of the female anatomy he supposedly spent his whole life from age two dreaming about and wishing for - and which he went to such painful lengths at age 18 to try to simulate through surgery.

Remember you guys? Everyone and their dog was frantically knitting them two years ago.

BTW, not to nitpick - coz in pandemic and lockdown days everyone's sense of time seems to be off - but in point of fact, it was more like four years ago.

The big pussy hat march was on January 21, 2017, the day after Trump was inaugurated. The original design/pattern was done in November 2016. And the release of the video and audio tape in which Trump was heard and shown in 2005 making his infamous "grab 'em by the pussy" remarks was in early October of 2016.

By the time the second march rolled in early 2018, the pussy hats were, dare I say it, old hat.

It all happened in protest against his “grab ‘em by the pussy” boast, didn’t it?

Tbh I’m glad they’ve disappeared. Not the reason - TRAs being their usual disgusting selves - but because I loathe the term pussy applied to women’s genitals. I love cats more than I’ll ever love any human, and a word that probably goes back to Ancient Egypt, a term of affection for them, is unusable in public. I’d be happy to see vulvas referred to as vulvas, not by any slang term.

From the website of the Pussy Hat Project

The name Pussyhat™ was chosen in part as a protest against vulgar comments Donald Trump made about the freedom he felt to grab women’s genitals, to de-stigmatize the word “pussy” and transform it into one of empowerment, and to highlight the design of the hat’s ’pussycat ears’. Leveraging social media and the close-knit nature of the global knitting community, word was spread and the fuse was lit.

https://www.pussyhatproject.com/our-story

The hats originated in response to the shaming of women by Trump, a man who is an exemplar of domineering, blowhard, attention-seeking misogyny in its more traditional form. And the hats quickly went out of fashion coz of the shaming of women by trans-identified men, who exemplify domineering, blowhard, attention-seeing misogyny in its latest and currently most fashionable form.

Website of Krista Suh who says she first came up with the idea: Krista Suhhttps://kristasuh.com/the-pussyhat/

The Pussy Hat Project and Suh say Kat Coyle, owner of Little Knittery, designed the pattern. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pussyhat-project

Thanks for the extra info!

I cringe a bit at the “empowerment” bit. Verrrry optimistic, like the whole “reclaiming slurs” idea - we’ve seen how well that went.

It always strikes me that Trump would fit perfectly in the trans movement. He’s already got the misogyny, the addled brain, the perversions, the dreadful hair, the layers of makeup ...

Thank you, feminism historian! I greatly appreciate your long view of history and insight.

They were created by a WOC as well.

Nobody has Barbie pink genitals. The pink was for femininity.

There were plenty of pussy hats at our local march this year in southern California.

Yep. Literally just men telling women to shut up about feminism.

Yes, that was the event, that made me start paying attention to the gender woo woo going on. I didn't understand how some of the feminists I was following wanted the pussy hats gone, because they weren't inclusive of males with dysphoria. Imagine my feelings when I discovered that trans didn't even mean transsexuals or that AGP made the vast majority of TIMs. I knew men were capable of A LOT, to subjugate women, but I was shocked to see, how willing many women are, to cater to and protect those men.

I was never a fan of them because I thought they made women look silly. But the TRAS deeming them offensive pissed me off and made me defend them.

Me too. I have put a lot of life-work into being taken seriously. It is impossible to be taken seriously while wearing a neon pink cat-ears hat. It looks like something a 5 year old would be in to. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I believe childish things have their place and time and need to be left behind in adulthood.

Over on the debate sub when it was still on Reddit, I was always accused of pushing respectability politics because I tend to think adults should be adults and that people have a right to not think of prostitution or porn as empowering or a real job. I honestly think this is why the right is winning. People also see more and more right wing women too in non traditional jobs and see left wing feminists praising porn and crap and think feminism has gone insane.

Just look at an average college campus libfem. She looks certifiably nuts. She looks like something a toddler drew. She's likely studying something that will never make money, a 'field' that only leads to a career in academics but probably not even that. She posts videos on tiktok crying hysterically over something Trump said. Then head over to the Campus Catholics club. The women are neat, conventionally attractive, and majoring in nursing or accounting. You're damn right the average person is going to take the political views of one more seriously than the other.

[–]questioningtw 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

it is the same with the prostitution/stripping/porn thing. The girl that actually goes to school and majors in something smart like healthcare, business, engineering while working as a server is smart. Thinking you are too good to work those jobs, so you make easy money stripping is stupid and of course people are going to think you are not very intelligent or have no discipline. it isn;t just women either, Reddit has this ridicoulus antiwork sub where a bunch of NEET boys talk about how awful it is they are expected to work, while on the bluecollarwoman sub is full of women who take pride in their work. Arg..i kind of changed the subject. Yes, how you act and look matters and that is not oppression in the slightest.

Yes holy Cthulhu thank you. These days being of the opinion that hard work, self-discipline, taking reproduction and sexuality as serious intimate matters (not playground games) and presentation of image are things that matter are akin to treason. Protestant values have been culturally shat on (rightly so in some wats) but the useful values it contained were thrown out as uncool and restrictive along with the dumb religious restrictions, and nothing replaced them.

[–]questioningtw 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I used to get so outraged at their all work is exploitation shit. As someone who has ALWAYS taken pride in her work that is just so damn insulting. Being lazy is not a virtue.

I went over there and read some of their drivel just now because apparently I hate myself. What a pack of delusional man-babies. Under communism, I will be free to pursue my interest in life-sized anime dolls fulltime! No moron. Under communism you will be forcibly conscribed to the army or else assigned to a factory job at which if you fail to meet your quota, you will be denied rations or shot.

Oh they are so ridiculous. The UBI forum is just as bad. The hilarious thing is Marx was incredibly PRO work----so pro work that he thought people would be happy to work for free! The fact is most people do WANT to work. It is human nature to want to be rewarded for your work as well. Automation honestly terrifies me, and I resent this....but we will all be free to sit on our asses all day. No thank you.

This is what caused my peak trans. Prior to that I thought transwomen were our allies. I was very upset about Trump being elected and initially the Women's March seemed like an amazing event where women were coming together to fight sexism and highlight the need for women's reproductive rights. The entire movement lost it's teeth and credibility when they bent over backwards to be 'intersectional.' People were upset that a white woman came up with the initial idea, so they brought in Linda Sarsour who was actively anti-semitic. They started using the image of women in hijab as somehow feminist. Then Tamika Mallory was brought onboard, a woman who spoke in glowing terms about Elijah Mohammed and the Nation of Islam - hardly a woman friendly organization.

Then transwomen started complaining about the pussy hats, because 'not all women have vaginas' and 'not all vaginas are pink.' You dumb ass fuckwits. The hats weren't supposed to look like vaginas they were fucking cat ears. It was a play on words. It was at this point that I began to see just how idiotic and incoherent mainstream feminism had become. I realize there had been a schizm between actual feminism (radfem) and this new ideology (libfems.) The nonsense around the Women's March made us look like idiots and gave detractors of feminism more ammunition to use against us.

If I sound angry it's because I am. I am over 50 years old and can't believe how far backwards mainstream feminism has gone. I've been fighting for women's rights all of my life and it's been in vain. I'm fucking furious, but also exhausted. I give up.

I'm even older, and feel much the same way. Furious, exhausted and defeated. And pissed off also at the way so many women who consider themselves "progressive" and "woke" and call themselves "feminists" have been involved in perverting and inverting feminism and rolling back rights, provisions and protections that women of previous generations worked hard for.

Don't underestimate them. They're not actually stupid - they know its a harmless play on words. They don't care. The intention is not the point. Weaponizing compassion and semantics to force women to bend the knee to their whims is the point, and they never pass up an opportunity.

Yeah, I remember this. Before all this I had a handmade black cat hat I wore all the time. Had to stop wearing it during this time because people yelled at me that it was offensive.

Also the inside of everyone's vagina is the same color, pink.

[–]wecandobetter[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Number of people who know that the vagina is on the inside where there is no melanin of any color = very low.

Everyone hates PETAS

Who does have a pink pussy? Maybe if you're white and it's inflammed and itchy, lmao

Feminism is being crushed right now. Holy fuck this is insane. Do not ever let this feel normal. It's not. Women are female. We have been oppressed on the basis of our sex.

[–]divingrightintowork 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah... It's not a woman's issue unless it impacts men.
