I guess Gentleman Jack fits your description

Came here to say this. Recently rewatched for the third (fourth?) time, absolutely worth it.

I saw some article about how the actresses are growing out their body hair for the second season. Yay for historical accuracy. Now I am even hoping Suranne will have a bit of a light mustache.

Hadn't heard there was gonna be a second season, that's awesome!

I would add another vote to this recommendation

You're asking for too much.

I was worried about that, haha. I've watched a huge deal of bad, overly sexualised lesbian side plots that are completely unrealistic, but I suppose that's the only way to appeal to as any people as possible. Lesbians are a tiny demo :(

[–]VioletRemi 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (33 children)

Not tinier than gay men, but there much more about them than about us. And there much less objectified or sexualized stuff about them, while about us it is the majority of our representation.

[–]florasis 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

I actually see more lesbians plots than gay.

[–]VioletRemi 8 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 3 fun -  (8 children)

Well, I do too, but it is only because I am explicitely searching for them. In average popular media there more gay men, and in general they are just there. While lesbians are often if added - only as a trophy or "for looks". Later years DC and few other companies started adding lesbians into mainstream media, like Poison Ivy + Harley Quinn, or in She-Ra. And I was really glad that in Adventure time they actually made Marcelina nad Bubblegum to be together in last episode, but I am sad that they were not brave enough to do that earlier, as they were afraid of being banned and loosing money in many countries.

Hm, actually, maybe nowadays there is more lesbian stuff than gay. I stopped watching mainstream media around 5 years ago. So I am speaking with 5+ years old perception in mind.

[–]florasis 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

No, actually, I really see more lesbians in normal media, without searching for it. Lesbian couples are more common, cause they're more tolerated.

[–]VioletRemi 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Seems times are changing, or maybe mainstream media that is popular here is a bit different to the ones in the west.

That actually interesting thing. Gay men are less tolerated here, but in movies and tv series produced here or in Russia there a lot more gay men, while almost zero lesbian couples. And mainstream media from the west that is popular here is often have some kind of gay men innuendos, but often no lesbians. At least it was like that before.

Here in general "strong woman" shows or movies or even games are not popular at all, even among women.

And in older times it was other way around, with Buffy, Xena, etc.

[–]carrotcake 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah same in here. Gay men are a lot more popular in national media. But i agree that in the US media lesbians tend to be more common.

In general, in series and popular media, if there is a gay couples, it is usually women. Recently they had the first major videogame, with a lesbian protagonist, the last of us 2. The 100 series had a beautiful lesbian couple, the end was tragic, but they were still cool. These two, from a soap in Spain, had me hooked, the younger woman is really married with a woman in real life:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GDmfQ5xRbA

Spain is fucking great in making amazing passionate love stories.

How many things are slightly or strongly different in different countries, even if they are neighbourhgs.

It is interesting to learn more about different situation with lesbians and our representation in the world.

And yeah, it is always only single gay too, almost never couples.

In gaming, thought, situation is different. Especially in japanese games - there like almost never gay men, but sometimes there whole game is full of overly sexualized lesbian couples (like there even whole worlds with lesbians only and one MC male).

      [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

This is so true. I notice it often.

Should be around same amount, biologically speaking. It is harder to find lesbians behind all those pseudo-lesbians, and behind pressure on women, that is true.

        [–]lurkergirl 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (19 children)

There is unimaginably more pressure on gay men. It's time to be fully honest with ourselves. Men have way more freaks sexually; far more MTFs, far more sadists, far more masochists, etc by several magnitude. There's likely something similar going on with gay men versus gay women too.

This opinion was very unpopular back on True lesbians too, but I don't see how you could spend good amounts of time with real world homosexuals and not agree with this.

        [–]VioletRemi 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (18 children)

And how that is connected with amount of gays/lesbians? Loving women or men is not a kink, it is innate.

No, it usually ends in tears or cringes in North American shows. Maybe there are better ones that are not from here.

              [–][deleted] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

She-ra and the princesses of power. Just be warned that “Woke” identity characters are shoe-horned in

              [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I only remember one character being like that, but at least it's a literal alien creature that makes sense in a scifi setting.

              [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Yeah I’ll give them a pass on the gay lizard thespian, but the trans and such I don’t

              [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Who were the other trans characters? I can't remember anyone else being confirmed trans, just a bunch of fans theorizing that such-and-such could be trans because of a flat chest.

              [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

They go on and on about the star sibling character and Peekablue as trans characters

              [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Not in the show. The only information I could find on those minor characters was from this Tumblr post made by an artist who worked on the She-Ra reboot. But thanks for pointing it out, I didn't pick up on that. (Probably because those characters barely made an impact or lasting impression as minor characters.)

              [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I mostly ignore it cause I still think it’s all bs that they claim even those characters. Like the artists just wanted more male characters doesn’t make them “you know” 🙄

Acacias 38, Maite and Camino, spanish soap. The younger girl is married with a woman in real life. It was great to see a lesbian character played by an actor who really loves women:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GDmfQ5xRbA

Call the Midwife has a tragic but then sweet lesbian subplot for a couple of seasons. And that's just a great show overall anyway.

I have better luck finding movies that fit this description than actual TV shows to be honest. The condition of lesbian cinema has improved rapidly in the past few years.

One Mississippi also might fit. Plus it's based on the real life story of how the comedian Tig Notaro met her wife. Warm, funny and real.

atypical!! fantastic show aside from the lesbian plot, great chemistry between the two actors, a slow burn but not two slow. And of course they get together by the end

If you like magic/fantasy shows, Motherland: Fort Salem (on Hulu) has a pretty solid lesbian romance. It's a bit more dramatic can-I-trust-her/is-she-on-our-side than will they/won't they. I personally enjoy the worldbuilding of the show but fair warning it has its cheesy, eyebrow-raising moments.

Season two of Umbrella Academy (on Netflix) has a relatively slow burn, bittersweet romance too but deals with more of the real world prejudices a bi/lesbian couple would face. Fort Salem is in a fantasy matriarchy so its really freeing to not deal with all that.

Supposedly Person of Interest has a slow burn lesbian romance but I've never watched it myself so grain of salt. And there's always Gentleman Jack <3
