Was it the academy of bards that had all the fic?

I read Jericho maybe 3 years back, and none of them at the time, either. I didn’t even know that they existed! I bet many people have real books that started as Xena fics and have no idea. I didn’t know until after I read it.

It’s interesting because sometimes when authors start with fanfic and then publish them as independent stories they lack dimension; dimension that fans of a show would already have in mind during their own readings of earlier permutations of a story. I’ve read some stories that were great which started out as fanfic, and some where I had to look them up after to figure out what the fuck was missing in the story. Lol. Jericho was good by itself

Island of Belliza was favourite. Use to read it over and over as a teen

Such movies only good when you watched them as a kid. Nowadays all 80-90s shows like that are super cringe, if you don't have nostalgia for them.

I don't really get it either, it was on TV when I was more into Dawson's Creek, Popular and Young Americans (Kate Moennig had me feeling some kind of way in my early teens - if anyone else saw that show). Plus I was never really into shows like that. It is kind of how I feel about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I have dated several women that were just crazy about that show but I was never really into it. I think maybe if you are from that time period when there were basically zero lesbians on TV, Willow and Tara (or I guess Xena) were characters people really latched onto due to the dearth of representation.

When I was a kid, I didn't care for the show. However, even as four year old me sat blopped up on my pillow looking at the TV, I remember watching scenes of them thinking,"they have a weird relationship that is different"-thoughts of a four year, that is. Same with that Batman cartoon. Ivy and Harley's relationship was 'different' as well, I thought when as a kid.

Back to Xena. Last year I actually sat and watched the show. Seasons 1 through 3, I liked. My favorite episode being The Debt pt 1 when Xena goes to Chin.

One thing I liked about the show that I think wlw content lacks now is conflict between the characters. Besides for "oh we can't be together", there's hardly any real substance.

Of course, I haven't seen every wlw content out there so maybe there is content out there in which the characters go through trials and tribulations.

It's funny because there was a thread about aggressive women. Xena was that and attempting to redeem herself and Gabrielle, the main influence. The two women were completely different in characterism and beliefs, even values.

Even though it wasn't an official wlw content, I'd say now, the wlw content regardless of the characters sexual orientation, homosexual or bisexual, the characters are quite the same and think the same. Maybe media likes to believe all homosexual women are the same.

I saw a commercial of it once when I was about 7/8. She terrified and fascinated me in equal measure: this giant woman running across the fields, throwing heavy things and breaking strong men with her look alone 😂.

I used to regret my father monopolised the TV and I didn't get to see it, but with your comment - perhaps it was for the best. :)

Wow, I think you just explained why I didn’t like the show. If I saw giant women, running in a field, throwing heavy things, scaring men with a glance growing up that meant it was hay season and I was being forced to buck bales into stacks chasing a baler and it wasn’t fun.

Oh bless 😂. Tis settled then - too many unpleasant associations.

I loved the show as a youngin. Tried watching it as an adult and didn't like it.

My mom used to watch this show and that was my main exposure to it, so it kind of ruins any sexual connotations I could otherwise get from this show. I haven't tried watching it during my adult life for this reason.

No, you’re not alone here. Even when it first came out I wasn’t a fan. I still don’t get it.

I liked it OK, but I didn't watch it regularly. I'm not into superhero stuff in general, so that probably explains it.

Yikes I forget it was that bad. Eh I put it under a nostalgic memory and allow people to like things I don’t like or get.

I think your ex girlfriend had a serious problem and I don’t blame you for being weirded out.

I watched Xena a little as a kid and when I had access as an adult and knew about the lesbian subtext, I watched it just to say I did. I enjoy fantasy and camp, so why not. I can’t say its a great work of art, but it had its place. It’s funny to see shows after it be so much less progressive than it managed to at times. The writing went down hill with Xena as it went on, lol. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and a lot of younger lesbians never engage with it now, I think I’m the only one of my friends who has (25-30).
