That's a great one - thank you! Some ebook shopping is in order.

Not that anybody wants to know, but the hotest scenes from the whole series to me are when they show Ann Walker's face at the moment Anne Lister "goes in". Them eyes close, them fine eyebrows go up and the whole face shines out a sort of wondrous pleasure. There's a word for that - beatitude. And there are those barely audible moans she does, that are just... Ughhhhhh

Anyway, Sophie Rundle I RESPECT your acting skills, nothing else :D

Ahha, I was just about to message you and ask to confirm on the book. I am leafing it on my kindle now looking for the topic you mentioned but so far unlucky :)

Edit: I think you highlighted sth essential to good rep:

built up intimacy, pleasure, tension, emotion

It's true. I became engrossed a second time. I need to get my hands on them dvd extras online somehow (I don't have a dvd player). I want to know what was the specific thinking behind each decision in the show. Appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction - my dms are open as the young ones say. :)

Remembered sth else. Paradoxically, Titanic with Kate and Leo, is good rep of a sex scene in general.

The scene was focused on showing hotness (the sweaty car windows nail it) rather than body parts. I mean it was so successful in doing that, that the hand sliding on the glass is part of our mythology of desire now. And it's not tainted by heterosexual dynamics, man and woman sex is not the first thing that comes to mind when I remember "the hand" :). I may be wrong...

I have sex from a loving place, no matter what I am up to with a partner, and EVERY touch of my hand or body on her, in the bedroom or not, is part of that same closeness. Probably helps that I am not a casual affection giver to people other than my partners, so when I am touching a woman’s body it’s most often a woman I am in love with. I honestly don’t see any type of sex as divorced from love, when I am having it.

I can watch things like below her mouth and think it looks pretty porny but have definitely done that. Lol. Blue is different because that scissoring was dumb and awkward, which is too bad because some of the other parts of the film were VERY realistic. I think it devalued something that could have been beautiful.

I’m a bit torn on the subject because I want them to stop representing us. I haven’t seen portrait, but one of the most accurate representations of being in love with a woman I’ve seen in a long time was a couple of bi women in a film called “lovesong.” One of them seemed to be a later bloomer and she was very much in love with her friend. Watching her emotions (it was Riley Keough) play across her face in the presence of the woman she was in love with is one of the most lesbian things I’ve seen on film, and I think many of us would remember that feeling. Especially in our first few lady loves. I don’t even remember the sex part because it wasn’t even the THING.

I wanted to add: Lovesong took the characters and made them seem human. Riley’s character was a person in love. I believed her. They didn’t need to add a bunch of scissoring, they showed her face and that was enough. There was nothing fetish about it. Despite the fact that one or both women had men in their past, present or future, it was not about the men. I don’t even think I’ve ever seen a film where women are involved with men but the men don’t even matter, aside from Lovesong. The dudes were not some demons floating around trying to ruin the lesbian fun, they were barely involved at all. That was nice because being in love with a woman isn’t about men.

          I agree.

And they do fetishize emotions, since they seem to include enough danger and pain and male threats in most lesbian connections on film, and don’t usually have enough actual love to balance any of it. Lovesong was not particularly happy, but it didn’t make loving women as a woman into some kind of fraught and painful, desperation-based porn scene and try to pass it off as love. There were more tender and caring moments in it than I’ve seen in so long. IMO, if anything, it’s good representation for bi women too because it doesn’t resort to the “slutty and up for anything” trope of them, either.

It is nice to see love between women, lesbian or no, portrayed as real, and heavy, but also light and beautiful. For once

Oh bless. Thanks for mentioning about the NSFW, I'm really not good at this stuff and was at a loss whether to tag it nsfw or not. I'll untag for now and add the psa - did I get that right? 😅

I mean is it really a nsfw post - I'm not sure anymore it's late where I am my brain checked out :)

I honestly don’t see any type of sex as divorced from love, when I am having it.

A thousand times yes to that. Also thank you for highlighting the redeeming quality of Blue - the rep of the way affection grows and wanes was pretty spot on, the scissoring and the length of the sex scene tainted some of it though.

And here is where I actually disagree - I don't want them to stop representing us, mainly because we can't and also because sometimes good stuff can come out of the bad rep. Bad rep has an important function - for us to point a finger at it and shame it for being bad so that it stops happening with this mad frequency and we get better imagery. Like Lovesong.

So glad you described what was great about it because I let the damned press convince me it's not about them being in love. But it totally is. The director did one great thing - letting the actresses take the story where they felt best. And it's all in the looks. Riley Keough and Jena Malone carry that movie! I wanted to shout at the screen - just tell her you love her, ffs! :)

          [–][deleted] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (38 children)

The breakup scene and the dinner party scene on blue were just excruciating. Very realistic. I felt sick. Also when Lea Seydoux interacted with Adele, she was very convincing as a lesbian, and when they saw eachother crossing the street. I remember seeing lesbians and it opening my mind like that. Opening up the idea that I can have what they have, those women. That curiosity being sparked. I think blue had some great scenes.

I’ve been Riley Keough in love with a bisexual woman I was friends with. Lovesong made me think she was at least bisexual. I think Jena’s character knew Riley’s character was not straight. I think Jena had been a little in love with her for a long time and waiting for Riley to figure it out, and when she did it was too scary and she bolted. Even Jena’s mom’s character, who was a bitch, was confused as to wtf was going on and what the hell her daughter was doing making that big choice she made near the end. There was a lot of subtext. You can read it in many ways. But Riley Keough was practically choking on her feelings. One of my favourite scenes is when they are driving or something and Riley is looking at Jena like she is made out of light, and the way they look at each other on the Ferris wheel or whatever they were on. I really appreciated that affection being translated. I experience love like that so I am super biased.

I want good representation but also want to hoard the truth. I almost want what lesbians share to be ours and not made into more of a commodity or fetish. Does that make sense?

It makes absolute sense what you're saying about rep - wholeheartedly agree.

Your reading of Lovesong is opening my eyes to what might have been going on in Riley's character's mind. When I was watching I was really relating to Jena's character: the part that she must've been in love with Riley for a long time, but had to suppress that, because it was not answered, they couldn't find a way to be on the same level with their feelings. I lived through a similar situation: being in love with somebody and having them reciprocate a certain sympatico in a way. But somehow we couldn't connect as lovers, it's like trains that never meet because of messy schedules. Like Jena's mom in the film:"wtf is going on?". :)

Everything you said about Blue, spot on, also this:

when they saw eachother crossing the street. I remember seeing lesbians and it opening my mind like that.

Oof, the feeling of clocking someone on the street and them clocking you with that knowing little smile. For that alone, Léa Seydoux succeded in her portrayal in my book :)

Yeah, lovesong. Riley’s face when her friend takes off. That feeling of shock and loss. It was the day after they finally boned too, I think. Riley was all “omg that’s what I am supposed to feel” and on some lezbo cloud and Jena is like omg. I thought it was super sad how Jena could only admit it when it was sort of too late. I also recently watched it with Pixels and I noticed that Riley was separated from her husband near the end there but they barely mention it. Like hell yeah she is because she’s a fucking dyke. She was super inexperienced, even with men, compared to Jena. A real dunce. She seemed pretty lez to me. Jena seemed like a legit bisexual, but with issues, but also like she did love her friend. Not evil. I like that they didn’t have her fiancé be some demon man, he seemed like a nice guy. It was hard to even hate him. I really liked that no one was a villain. They were all grey. Because that’s more what real life is like, and real life feelings are complicated.

That scene in Blue, Adele clocked Lea, but also that lea was with a woman, so it was like herself being seen and her actually feeling it.

Lea interacting with her in that bar was super lezbo too, tbh. She had the baby dyke on the back foot and she knew it. Lol

Jeez, your commentary is bringing back some intense memories from first viewings. Again, I must quote Galadriel from LOTR: "Some things that should not have been forgotten, were lost" - a dry spell in relationships is making me feel too much for them storylines.

What can I say, I'm just gonna reread your post and maybe chill down a little 😂 or maybe rewatch with the commentary in mind. Choices, choices :)

Lol! That’s the nerdiest comment response I’ve ever gotten. I heard the quote in cate’s exact voice tho. So I mean....

Cate's voice alone can get me on that lezbo cloud you were talking about.

And that is why, hot nerdiness is the hill I'm prepared to die on lol

Yeah she was a hot Galadriel for sure. I was wishing I was a lesbian ranger

I want a movie with a Buckskin-like character as the lead. Nobody, not a single screenwriter dead or alive can come up with such awesome zingers and situations. She should advise on film sets. That's our representation problems sorted. :) And Cate should play her lol

Whenever I'm knitting and ignoring my girlfriend she starts fingering then fisting the yarn ball while making meaningful eye contact and fake moans. I try to stop her before she tangles the yarn but she's insatiable. Lesbian representation needs more things like this. Playful and funny and mildly annoying.

          [–]Innisfree[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Loooool. Your gf has a wicked sense of humour!

And that's a great idea! Can be used in a comedic way (as demonstrated :)) and it also has some dramatic layers. Lesbians knitting has a rich history (I'm thinking of The Daughters of Bilitis and their lesbian book clubs with knitters, some independent women in middle ages who earned an income through spinning wool etc.) and we even have a whole mythology here: Ariadne and her red thread. It's a symbol of cleverness and independence - a myth ripe for a modern/feminist remagining.

So it seems, Celine Sciamma, we raise your 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' a 'Portrait of a Girl with Thread" and to your Eurydice reimagining we answer with a new Ariadne. :)

I never realised the true meaning behind the scene that you mentioned from a portrait of lady on fire. I found it a bit strange too but now, looking back it was indeed creative way to depict lesbian sex. I wish there to be more creative scenes like that one rather than the ones which lean more towards 'porn' side.

👏🏻👏🏻 Well written. I love this! It is so true lesbian sex is 🎶the best🎶 Got hot and bothered just reading about it lol. I don’t have much to contribute though. I love this thread.
