Saidit.net - New rotating banner system

Our new banner system has a bunch of cool new banners and you get a random one every time you load a page.

What do you all think of the new banner images?

I think eventually we will make it so that the banner changes once and hour for everyone, on the hour. But this requires a bit of javascript we have yet to write.

We might also separate them out in to nightmode-friendly banners so that when in nightmode only darker banners will appear (as not to blind you with bright lights). Is this something people would find useful?

Yes I like it and Yes a separate night-mode selection would be nice when the banner selection has bright white.

About bright lights, your monitor usually has 6500k color temperature which is huge when browsing at night even in dark mode. I don't know if this is common knowledge but I recommend f.lux on pc.

Also, what will you do with the logo? It doesn't really look right, maybe align it more to left?

I use f.lux as well, and I'll add my recommendation to yours, to anyone reading.

Lol d3rr said the same thing. I think it's fine and if you move it left it'll just crowd the tabs and other stuff on the left and look cluttered. But if you center it with the browser, then it does weird things when the window gets too narrow.

We haven't changed the logo from how it was, tbh I think it looks fine to me.

Where exactly do you imagine it would look best? Like the left edge of it should be aligned with what other feature on the page? I'm open to suggestions if you have one that looks good.

Well I think as we get bigger you will probably get demands for an icon, like /u/Riva did now. You would also need one for the mobile app. Edit: A user said the egyptian god Thot would be a better symbol for SaidIt and I think it's a good option.

For the site we shouldn't copy Reddit either and aligning it to the left kinda does that... The right side is more spacious, I would imagine random backgrounds but on top of it on the right side to be the logo with a solid color as background that would fade into the normal image background.

I used to use f.lux ...it keeps to conflict with my process lasso. After I uninstall it, I have problems fall into sleep.😫😴🛏

I hadn't thought about making seasonal banners, but I guess it's a possibility. If someone wants to make a couple and send them to me, we might put them up. 170px by 3k-4k px in jpg format.

I like it. Frankly the left-right question that was brought up doesn't bother me at all, esp bc its relative placement is dependent on how big someone's browser window is.

The fact that it's a dialog bubble makes it even more appropriate for it to be wherever bc to me it's like someone just chiming in randomly to the convo, which exactly represents what this site is.

If I had any nit to pick, it would be that I don't love the banners that are brighter/more vibrant, as I already must have my computer on half-brightness because reasons --but I doubt I am in the majority on this.

Yeah I agree.

We've picked our nightmode banners and they should be easier on the eyes soon. Only the darkest banners will be shown when in nightmode.

I prefer wide angle photos on the banner if you want to use landscape photos.

The jpeg quality should be100%...

I can see the difference with the original png in first sight...

I didn't work on that, but what was your original filesize? I think 1/2 mb for a banner is too big for mobile users. Maybe 4k is too wide and they should all less wide and repeating. I donno.

The biggest one is a 1.2 MB png, convert to 100% jpg should be around ~500 KB.

Was joshed looking for info on these gorgeous decorations, wondering from whence they came. Answer is here, but how about some more info, please?

These are truly lavish Waaaiiiid screen format pics. Is there an archive somewhere aggregating them?
Will be seeing the library expanded?
The idea of nightmode banners might be extended to other environment-sensitive selections. How about nation or state sensitivity? How about age or sex of user sensitivity? Preference selections?

About the automatic thumbnail feature... saidit has a non-reddit habit of searching thru posts for image features and converts them into a thumbnail to illustrate a title. I adore this feature, have been using it regularly.

Is there an auto-formatting function that converts large images into thumbnails?
How about auto-trimming, stuff like blank borders and text?
