Wait, why are there different gender classes for chess? Are the pieces heavier or something?

Short answer is because they wanted to get women into it back in the day. Longer answer is they still want to get women into it today.

Because men and women are on average different and those differences include interests and aptitudes as well as physical attributes.

The people who spent the best part of half a century denying those differences, and portraying any mention of them as a supremacist argument, have begun to reap what they have sown.

I think there should be a women’s and an open category in everything. That way women who wish to can compete against men, but still retain the right to compete solely against women.

And in sports or events where there is some physical contact (including soccer) there should be strict separation based on sex purely on the grounds of safety.

Now you're just going too far. If men can't change their name to Loretta so they can grope or bash women on the sports field, that's genocide!

Honestly, I agree, but I'd even go further and make a move 'if a woman chooses to compete in the open category vs. men, they surrender their right to compete in the women's category forever.' If a woman is talented enough to compete against men, then going back to the women's division when they find they aren't as good as they think they are is just as much an act of cowardice as a trans woman deciding to enter the women's division because they know damn well they're going to destroy the opponents where they wouldn't have a prayer vs. the men.

I do agree on the "strict separation based on sex" for physical sports, though I would argue that this rule should also exempt professional wrestling and only pro wrestling (pro wrestling being "fake" means that success is not based on talent but on "you will win this match because you're scripted to win this match", and because it's fake the opponents are working together and each doing their best to protect the other one from getting hurt, so the safety grounds is not an issue.)

There pretty much already is...Virtually all the mens leagues are technically open ones.

I don't think that applies to board games the way it does feats of physical strength.

Even if you could quantifiably "prove" men were smarter on average, the point of an athlete is they are exceptional.

The world chess rankings are strangely gendered.

I bet it has to do with levels of obsessiveness or something.

Women can play against men if they want to. But for women who might be too intimidated by male opponents, they created a female-only category for them, in order to encourage more women to get into the game.

So allowing trannies into their league would effectively negate the entire reason the league exists to begin with.

[–]alladd 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

ok that makes sense. it makes complete sense in a co-ed situation that women would have trouble assimilating to the extant culture.

Maybe it's that often in nerdy male hobbies, there exists a critical threshold of socially inept individuals that will drive away women, by swarming on them and such.

[–]QueenBread[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Nah. As a nerd woman, that's not it. It's a socialization thing. It's not ladylike to play with toys when you're grownup, while men can do that because boys will be boys. The times I felt genuine gender dysphoria because I was the only female playing Warhammer.... or when I heard the mom of one of my friends making an amused comment like "how can your wives deal with you playing with toys!". Fuck you lady, I'm a woman too.....

[–]ClassroomPast6178 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

while men can do that because boys will be boys.

Lol.

Grown men playing with toys is no more socially acceptable than it would be for grown women. The number of friends of mine whose girlfriends and wives stopped them playing DnD or Warhammer proves that.

Men’s hobbies, particularly the obsessive ones, like trainspotting, are merely tolerated and remain the subject of ridicule by society.

Until it suddenly became cool, coinciding with the mass monetisation of geekdom by Hollywood (and the proliferation of cosplayers with OnlyFans accounts), no one gave a shit about geeks and nerds.

It’s cool that you like Warhammer, but don’t kid yourself that the men who grew up playing it had it easy. My friends and I were bullied mercilessly for being into DnD and Warhammer.

Save your time, a man could hung drawn and quartered for doing something and a woman could get a scolding for doing the same damm thing and she would still claim the woman had it harder.

[–]wylanderuk 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Told you she would do it...

As someone who has friends whose wives nag them about how they play dnd or warhammer, can you imagine how that makes me feel? If for example you thought knitting was awesome, and everyone considered knitting "for girls", chances are you'd drop your interest in knitting. Same goes for girls who like nerd stuff.

[–]wylanderuk 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

No there is a single gender based class the womans and a open class...

But it could down to "the greater male variability hypothesis" Which makes the claim that males cluster more at the ends of IQ than women. IE more idiots and more geniuses while women tend to cluster in the middle and combine that with probably more men being into chess at higher lvl so you end up with a bigger pool of men.

This however is about as popular as a fart in a spacesuit with feminists as they tend to ignore the entire more idiots bit.

[–]alladd 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

atheletes are exceptional, though. i would put any female chess grandmaster against any male one. and i don't think intellect, or that kind of intellect, is measurable enough or quantifiable enough to draw weight classes around.

[–]wylanderuk 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah but if the hypothesis is correct there will be more men at that lvl than women. And since its pretty much confirmed that men are on average more inclined towards things and women more inclined towards people that will lower the pool.

Which if the quick search I just did as of nov 2021 there are 1700 male grandmasters and whooping total of 39 female ones and a title of womans grandmaster that has lowered requirements of which there is a whooping total of 317...

Also if the person that replied to me is right the top ranking woman chess player is in position 123 and the next highest is 304...

So I don't think you should be so sure about that.

International chess organization (FIDE) is controlled by Russians and they do not tolerate bullshit. In 2017 they made the female world championship in Iran and obliged all girls to wear Hijab according to Iranian Law. Feminists, of course, were livid.

The current vice-president of Fide is Nigel Short, a famous player who once said literally that women are naturally inferior to men in chess. Which is very funny because he lost to female players more than once.
