We who post on politics regularly have a skewed idea about how interested all Americans are or are not in politics and how much they know or care about.

I tested the waters of trying to educate my brother in law about the Russia/Ukraine situation a few weeks after it popped off and he said he'd just rather not know. Sadly there's probably a decent amount of people that just aren't curious or want to educate themselves on events that will have ramifications around the world for decades to come. And my brother in law is an all around good guy so of course I'm not going to put us on bad terms. You just wish more people would want to learn about something serious that really does effect us all.

Most people in the West are genuinely convinced that Ukraine is kicking Russia's ass and will re-take Crimea and march on Moscow by the end of the year.

And that Zelensky is courageous hero scrappily winning against all odds against the evil Russian hordes through his and his countries strength of will.

Counteroffensive going well?

Oh no...

They would think that's Russian propaganda.

So long as they can hide behind a lie with a technicality, their faith to a lie is unquestionable.

Such is the Empire of Lies.

The way you cunts are talking, you sound like you want russia to win. WTF?

[–]captainramen🇺🇸🛠️ MAGA Communist 🛠️🇺🇸 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

So? Better than the British winning

So??? Earth to captainramen, commies are the bad guys

And Russian oligarchs are commies?

Yea?

[–]stickdog 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, they are capitalists, as are all current Western oligarchs.

But it's different when we do it. We are dropping bombs of peace.

It's not different, because we 'officially' inherited the British Empire when Truman took office.

We were never supposed to be an Empire. We have lost our way.

[–]Newmug 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Ya I know. Why the fuck do you keep bringing up the brits? They've been the bad guys since 1066. This is why we have to stop bad guys.

[–]risistill me 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Bad guys since 1066, yet we're not trying to stop them. To the contrary, we're in a mutual aid society with them.

Maybe stopping bad guys is not really our agenda.

Because this thing between them and Russia goes back at least 300 years? That's fine, whatever. The problem is they lack the balls and the ability to fight the Russians themselves. They always hide behind someone else.

Meanwhile, America has no actual, organic beef with Russia. We're natural friends and allies. We only went down this road with them in the first place when that Southern Democrat cuck traitor Truman started the cold war for his masters in the City of London.

They also need a modern poet as good as Tennyson to describe the outcome :-)

Most of us looked into Ukraine and how they have swastikas, hatred, ignorance, bigotry and antipathy to others and want nothing to do with C14, Svoboda, or any of the other groups that murder and torture and are the outgrowth of 75 years of CIA meddling into that region.

[–]Newmug 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (24 children)

You can have swastikas, hatred, ignorance, bigotry and antipathy to others as long as you like. Thats your choice, and its called freedom.

But who invaded who? Which country actually acted upon their swastikas, hatred, ignorance, bigotry and antipathy to others?

[–]stickdog 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Ukraine was actively shelling cities in its own country before Russia invaded. Or did you not realize this?

[–]Newmug 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

This is a brain melter. Are you ready? Are you ready for this???

Russia invaded in 2014!

Ukraine fought back, by shelling the russians in the occupied part of their country, between 2014 and 2022.

With me so far?

Russia then attacked Kyiv in 2022, with the intention of taking over the entire country.

Ukrainians are still shelling russians, in their own country.

Do you understand this?

[–]stickdog 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Do you think it makes you somehow virtuous to cheer for and fund one side over the other in an ethic border war between two corrupt oligarchies thousands of miles away from you?

Not sure where in the world you are from, but I live here. I can 1000% guarantee you that any referendums held under russian occupation were rigged.

And of course the Ukranians were shelling in 2017, they were invaded in 2014.

If Canada invaded you, wouldn't you fight back?

If Russia wins, the western imperialist hegemony still has some checks on its power.

If Russia loses we're full speed ahead into an even more global, inescapable, pervasive low-wage police state.

[–]Newmug 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (14 children)

What????? If russia attacks a soverign country whatsoever, thousands of innocent people will die. Start there. Then worry about low wages.

[–]CrazyjanecreepyjeffReality Monger[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

The US was killing innocent people in droves for years before this current conflict broke out. You're providing an emotionally driven argument. Here's a quick explanation of the historical context for Ukraine and Russias actions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFgCJejVtFE

[–]Newmug 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Yea, the US were wrong too, nobody is disputing that. When your tax dollars went to Afghanistan, you should have been protesting.

That link is bullshit. Hedges basically says "Ukraine promised not to join NATO, then they changed their minds. Therefore russia has the right to kill them". Thats the most fucked up logic I ever heard.

Tell me, how did you like 9/11? Were you in Manhattan that day? Did you know anyone who got pulverised by the collapsing towers or who suffocated to death in concrete dust? Were you concerned where your tax dollars were being spent when the second plane hit, or when the Pentagon was attacked?

[–]CrazyjanecreepyjeffReality Monger[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Thats the most fucked up logic I ever heard.

It’s the same logic the US would employ if China or Russia placed missiles in Mexico or Canada. You’re kidding yourself if you think the US wouldn’t immediately go to war preemptively to prevent the missiles from even being placed.

I was in high school when 9/11 happened and subsequently the invasion of Iraq. My special interest in politics started with an English research paper about money-in-politics as it relates to campaign financing. I also worked at that age so yes I’ve been concerned about where my tax dollars have been going for decades now. I’ve dug into the circumstances of 9/11 quite a bit. I think it’s ridiculous the families are still having to fight the biden administration to hold the Saudis accountable.

[–]stickdog 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, I was fucking concerned. 19 Saudis supposedly pulled off 9/11. So why did the USA use this tragedy as an excuse to strip US citizens of trillions by destroying the lives of millions of Iraqis and Afghanis?

[–]Newmug 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

[–]BlackhaloPurity Pony: Pусский бот 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

I'd rather my tax dollars not go to being the world police. Especially not to the ass end of the planet like Ukraine, Afghanistan or Syria. Let it be Europe's problem.

[–]Newmug 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Its the entire civilised world's problem.

How did you like 9/11? Were you in Manhattan that day? Did you know anyone who got pulverised by the collapsing towers or who suffocated to death in concrete dust? Were you concerned where your tax dollars were being spent when the second plane hit, or when the Pentagon was attacked?

[–]BlackhaloPurity Pony: Pусский бот 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Nope. Still don't care. And I want the Patriot act ended. Considering the US helped create Osama bin Laden and he was radicalized by US forces in Saudi Arabia, it's far better for the US to be more concerned about our own back yard and less meddling in others.

[–]Newmug 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

So when russia and China nuke your back yard, will you start to care then?

Gutenberg creates revolutionary technology and immediately uses it to print the Bible. Then Martin Luther comes along and uses the same technology to spread different religious propaganda, leading the masses out of the dark ages. Now the liberals and idpols are Bible thumping like the southerners these days. EVEN some of the commies I follow believe they're spreading a version of WWJD. History reveals, that using our collective advancements to dumb everyone down with christianity and wokeness does not lead to a lasting version of happiness and revolution. Happy, uniformed people suffer from an underdeveloped idea of freedom. We need to spread enlightenment but ditch the fairytale. I want to be fucking free. Can't be free in a vacuum of reality. Maybe that's what VR should stand for.

Thomas Jefferson's addendum: "if ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?"

If you do read the corporate news, you're misinformed.

And there's yer sign... News has to be a collective experience at some capacity to bounce ideas off of people and ensure you're not being told a lie that drives you elsewhere.

Honestly, I usually post an article and deal with criticisms just to make sure I'm learning how to handle feedback and keep the mind sharp. The days of solitary news reading to think that a newspaper built towards corporate interests is going to inform you are just no longer what is actually happening.
