This is a 1st class satire post. Respect.

I don't feel the bannings were heavy handed by Reddit standards, but that's a different culture.

I'm a free speech maximalist. As such, I'm not a mod of anything.
I reserve the right to criticize anything on the merits, and I don't want to agree to a voluntary social contract in which I'm obligated to be stuck in the middle of arguments of others.

I have independent agency.
Free speech maximalists who ban others are hypocrites. I wouldn't ban people if I could.

However, sometimes actors aggressively sabotage the site, and they need to be dealt with. I like to help identify these characters. It's my hobby.

This might appear to be a contradiction, but shills can say what they want, and I can sniff them out and then call them out on their bullshit.

So I'm suing for peace with WotB, as the local free-speech-maximalist shill hunter.

When in Rome do as the Romans do, right?
However, WotB has been exiled from Rome, and they've taken refuge in the North among the "barbarians" (according to the Reddit culture).

We barbarians have a great deal more freedom here in the wilds of the North. People aren't punished for insults or nasty ideas. But repeat offenders of "crimes" are dealt with.

Censorship is a crime against knowledge.

Branding of those who speak of harsh ideas is frowned upon, as subtle as it may appear. Although it's actually a funny idea. I laughed out loud when I read about it.
Regardless, it's an ad homenim attack on the person. It undermines the information by branding the person a thought criminal, or similar.

Welcome to the North. Hopefully you can all forget about the moral bankruptcy of Rome (Reddit), and make a home for yourselves here.

Don't isolate yourselves. You don't know what you don't know. Let the facts reveal the truth, so the truth can set you free.

I can assure you that you need to know about some uncomfortable truths that you won't hear about elsewhere.

You won't like the truth. I don't like it either, but I choose to know. I choose to recognize painful facts, and to adjust my thinking according.

The slavers of history have brainwashed us all. The truth has become unimaginable. We've been schooled to believe that the Truth tellers are our enemies.

We're like the wildlings of the North, and some of us speak too plainly for some. But we have the backs of every would-be ally.

But our allies need to take the time to carefully examine the facts. And then decide for themselves.

We're all doomed to slavery if we don't do this.

So I'm suing for peace with WotB, as the local free-speech-maximalist shill hunter.

You might need to use other words than that, because they may not mean to you what they mean to others.

It sounds like what you mean by "suing for peace" is "making s/WotB behave like everyone else."

If that actually is what it means to you, you're wasting your keystrokes.

We at WayoftheBern stumbled across the Concept of The Turtle, and it's effect on ... let's say "certain people" ... quite by accident.

Those "certain people" of Reddit completely lost their shit, much like "certain people" of Saidit are losing their shit now. And it has been fairly effective at what you claim to want, namely "sometimes actors aggressively sabotage the site, and they need to be dealt with."

"Certain people" perceived this sub to be "The New Guy" and stormed in, testing the boundaries of what would be put up with.

In modern parlance, they fucked around, they found out.

CP: I'm not touching you
CP: I'm not touching you
CP: I'm not touching you
CP: I'm not touching you

Mods: I'm not banning you.

CP: WAAAAAAAAA!

"sometimes actors aggressively sabotage the site, and they need to be dealt with." There. Dealt with.

I'm not a Mod, neither here nor in Reddit, but I'm pretty sure of one Mod Decision:
The Turtle Stays.

If you can "sue for peace" (whatever that actually means to you), under that one constraint, then sue away.

It sounds like what you mean by "suing for peace" is "making s/WotB behave like everyone else."

It depends on your definition.

Does "behave like everyone else." equate to maximizing free speech, and minimizing censorship and ad homenim branding of accounts?

Free speech is a maxim virtue of a free society.
It's a morally defensible appeal to reason.

Are you defending "the turtle" as a morally virtuous position?

Does "behave like everyone else." equate to maximizing free speech, and minimizing censorship and ad homenim branding of accounts?

It's beginning to sound like "suing for peace" is closer to "demanding that things be done your way, and under your framing of issues."

Are you defending "the turtle" as a morally virtuous position?

Interesting question. Morally virtuous? Awfully high ground you seem to want me to claim or not claim.
Do you claim such high ground?

I think it's an entertaining solution at Reddit

It's also a funny idea.

But it's an ad homenim.

I don't feel the bannings were heavy handed by Reddit standards, but that's a different culture.

Bannings? Don't bannngs mean that one cannot make a comment somewhere?
I do not think that is the case here.

I do not think that is the case here.

This pseudo-nuanced understanding is a legacy of the moral bankruptcy of Reddit's admin culture of censorship. Reddit sanctioned the criminalization of free speech. Everyone does what they can to survive in these circumstances.

It's conditioned behavior. The result of institutionalized abuse by aggressive censorship.

I'm not criticizing the mods in any personal way. I try to understand their circumstances, which are probably worse than ever before. WotB is in self-exile.
Previous "allies" have betrayed them for personal gain.

They've volunteers, and they've been literally sold out for profit.

I'm completely sympathetic. I'm trying to build bridges.

Reddit admin aggressively censores certain ideas for a reason.
TPTB are afraid of the public learning/knowing the facts, and recognizing the truth.

Ideas that are censored should be thoroughly investigated.

Censored topics are often an indication of suppressed facts that should be recognized and understood.

Here's a thought that most haven't considered.

Are you aware of any museums in Europe that are dedicated to the native American genocide?

There may be one or two, but they're not common place institutions.
I think we'd all agree to this general assumption. The crimes occurred in the Americas, and memorials belong here, and not in Europe.

Following on this notion: Why are there so many Holocaust museums all over the US???

The truth can be identified by the absence of evidence that should exist.

Here a concrete method of investigation that anyone can do.

Find an encyclopedia that was printed before 1960, but after 1945, and look for an article about the Armenian genocide. You're almost certain to find it.

Now use the same texts to look up the Holocaust.

Do this yourself, and don't take anyone else word for it.

The facts as they were before censorship and revisionism took hold.
Don't hate the messenger.

Y'all are still thinking that this is a Reddit thing. "Certain people" in Reddit HAAAATE this thing, as much, if not more than "certain people" in Saidit do.

This is something that has been allowed in the Reddit/Saidit code, apparently the whole time. We discovered it, analyzed it, tested it, revised it, refined it.... and have been using it for years. Y'all have been aware of it for what? Two weeks?

To y'all, this is Something New. And much like the apocryphal Green Monkey Dropped Back On The Island, what is Different must be Destroyed. Not gonna happen in this case.

sometimes actors aggressively sabotage the site, and they need to be dealt with.

<Deals with actors aggressively sabotaging the site>

Sure. I'm a turtle in my flair. I'm not screeching, or wailing in distress.

Don't get hung up on the turtle thing. It's a flimsy accusation.
It is funny.
I sometimes laugh at crass humor, but it isn't exactly high brow on the debate scale.

I doubt that critical thinkers such as yourselves would hang your hat on that as a community?

Your arguments have intellectual substance beyond ridicule, right?

If you eliminated the "turtle", then you'd still be able to stand up on your own two feet, and fight. Right?

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Something that you might need to know....

Due to an overly long relationship with a narcissistic, habitually-lying gaslighter, I made sure to unwire most of those "buttons" that most people have, that some will attempt to exploit. So, statements such as:

I doubt that critical thinkers such as yourselves would hang your hat on that as a community?

and

Your arguments have intellectual substance beyond ridicule, right?

Do not have the effect that you may think that they would.

[–]Tom_BombadilNational status = freedom 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Do not have the effect that you may think that they would.

You wouldn't be a member of the WotB if you didn't recognize the institutional abuse of the Democratic party.

It's time to acknowledge you're also a victim of institutional abuse from Reddit.

A victim of admin censorship, and admin sanctioned harassment from other Redditors who were much more asleep than yourself.

It appears that the years of abuse may have damaged your sensibilities, and somewhat retarded your psychological and spiritual growth.

I'm not going to hold that against you. Hopefully you'll come around.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Figured you'd take that that way. Way to "double down" there.

Responding to "attempts at emotional manipulation do not work on me" with "Well, you're broken!"? That's almost textbook. If you consider Gentle Art a textbook, then it is textbook.

It's time to acknowledge you're also a victim of institutional abuse from Reddit.

Actually, we at WotB have been aware of the "institutional abuse" from Reddit since the day we walked in from our exile from elsewhere, and have dealt with it with open eyes.

Those selfsame open eyes that can see the "institutional abuse," not from Saidit itself, but from a small bunch of self-appointed gatekeepers of Saidit. And we are dealing with it the same here as there.

admin sanctioned harassment from other Redditors

I'm guessing that the irony of that phrase is lost on you.

[–]Tom_BombadilNational status = freedom 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I'm a turtle in my flair.

Really? <goes to look> So you do. Is there a point in bringing that fact to the fore?

Don't get hung up on the turtle thing.

What a great idea. Have you suggested that to all those people running around, all hair-on-fire about it?

If you eliminated the "turtle", then you'd still be able to stand up on your own two feet, and fight. Right?

In case you haven't noticed, or forgot I already said it, I do not have control of the Turtle Button.
So, I do not have The Turtle. Therefore I do have to "stand up on [my] own two feet, and fight." If you want to look at it that way.

Why do you view it as fighting? You seem to have all this warfare framing in your speech.

For example, this "suing for peace" that you keep saying that you are trying to do.

I was interested in a bit of disambiguation on your use of the term. In the warfare framing that you seem to fall back on, "suing for peace" tends to have four main definitions:

  • Negotiations for the conditions to cease hostilities, sued for by one who has the ability to cease the aforementioned hostilities
  • Negotiations to begin the negotiations
  • A surrender, with a request for terms of the surrender, or
  • A demand for the other side to surrender, and obey.

Which of those four is closest to your "suing for peace"?

It would not look too good on your part if you actually meant one of those definitions but allowed everyone here to make the assumption that you meant one of the others....

I know you're joking, but - if I may - for the others:

TEMPORARY bans for REPEATED dickish behaviour is at issue, not permanent bans for a few comments. (That's giving someone a second chance to be less dickish.)

This is better than the insulting, permanent 'I like turtles' tag on unpopular visitors who had no idea they would have to be self-tagged in this manner because they did not agree with other users in this echo chamber. (This just gets rid of people who have some sembance of self-respect and would rather not self-tag themselves with 'I like turtles' in order to have a conversation, which automatically prohibits mutual respect in a free speech discourse.)

None of what I've mentioned above has been in the sidebar (nothing about turtles, types of bans, taxes, temporary bans, permanent bans, etc).

I'm also not claiming this is a big deal. I'm merely pointing out the problems, and getting a lot of false responses (like yours in this case) that I've had to respond to.

Why is this on a Sanders sub also reflects how we feel.

False responses

Well that's certainly a new one. I mean... I'm typing out the letters and giving a response that accurately points to information in regards to how people moderate and do things in a certain manner. Might be a bit rigid to claim it's fake news because somehow it doesn't feel like it points to everything you want when it does...

Also not in the side panel - or at least I don't see it there. The persistence with this issue - that visitors should automatically, magically understand WatB's unusual shell rules and whatever - indicates to me that those arguing with me about this have some form of autism. If WatB is not explicit regarding shell or ban requirements, they have no argument when shelled users complain.

It is permanent, according to the information sent to the user who is required to like turtles. There is no indication anywhere that this is temporary.

[–]bootylicious 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (46 children)

Yes - it's expected to be permanent to anyone who gets the notice; and for the long period thereafter, the automoderator ban remains active, with absolutely no indication of a reversal of that turtle tax.

I'm seeing a major trend at WatB that many of the regular users don't want visitors to undertand WatB's approaches.

I'm seeing a major trend at WotB that many of the regular users don't want visitors to understand WotB's approaches.

It's not deliberate. WotB has been doing this for seven years at Reddit so we're used to doing things certain ways. New WotB members at Reddit have adapted quickly to our quirks, so we haven't had to do much work on new user orientation.

[–]bootylicious 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (44 children)

I've been a Reddit WotB member for years - since the time Bernie campaigned (I helped him) - and still knew nothing of the turtle tax, types of bans, inside jokes, what's considered 'dickish' particularly at WatB, &c. A couple years ago I unsubscribed because it had been overrun with misinformation that's spread by the right and/or the 1% perhaps 4 years go. There have been some concerns on the sub that relate to Bernie. And I know that Trump's PR fooled people into believing that he was an outsider, somewhat like Bernie, and thus many Bernie voters were fooled into voting for Trump (who helped push the GOP agenda, as their puppet, harder than ever. I and others knew Bernie was unelecable after the DNC did not support him, and then Hillary failed to campaign properly, while also worrying potential voters. Trump got the anti-abortion vote, which was arguably the main message that turned Christo-fascist voters in his favor. But I digress.) Anyhow: I've visited WatB for years and didn't know what I've learned in the past few days about the sub.

That actually is one of the features of The Turtle. It is not as "Glaring Yellow Star" as certain people have claimed it is.

People can (apparently) go for years and not see it at all. At least, not notice it. The Turtle is much more apparent to the recipient than to those who do not know about it. Its innocuousness, its meaninglessness, is deliberate.

It was never meant to be an identifying mark, although some do treat it that way -- it is merely an extra requirement on "certain people."

We've heard that a lot over the years, and more times than not, it turns out the person making those claims was actually thinking of SandersForPresident, not WayoftheBern. Lack of Turtles, lack of "inside jokes" etc.... it fits the pattern.

I explained this earlier, and won't explain it again. Essentially, I was at the sub for the period in which it was about this:

not a Bernie Sanders sub but it strives to emulate his WAY of building coalitions with political opponents on those issues where agreement can be found.

I don't know if anyone was 'shelled' at that time.

Within a year or two of the sub's creation it was hijacked by the right-wing misinformation one still sees today. I unsubscribed at that time. The quote above has been entirely untelated to WatB.

2019 was the year that others were gearing up for another Bernie run and some had to watch that heartbreak happen twice. The "misinformation" coming out was about the FBI and Russiagate which people were dealing with. The misinformation was the preparation for COVID to take over the news. The misinformation was the fact that Trump was targeted by the FBI right along with his followers similar to Nixon so the Deep State could support their agenda.
