A belated addition in honor of Senator Menendez:

Welcome!

You seem new. Dance parties on Friday nights have been going on for centuries of internet time, wrt the regulars of this sub & the Reddit version.

Got any cover songs you like?

I'm going to limit myself to covers by members of the "Melbourne Mafia" (musical associates of Nick Cave)

First off, a menacing cover of Billy Idol's

  • White Wedding by Rowland S. Howard, off his brilliant album Teenage Snuff Film

(alternate link if the above doesn't work)

Then two by Mick Harvey from his album Intoxicated Man that is all (English lyrics) covers of Serge Gainsbourg songs :

Next, an instrumental cover of the Greek song Mia phora thymamai (hat-tip to Caelian's Miss Piggy selection) by the Dirty Three :

Finally, a bit of a cheat. Certainly a musical associate of Nick Cave, but not from Melbourne. Nevertheless, here is PJ Harvey covering Bob Dylan's

(Hope none of the links are geoblocked; they all work from Australia)

Frente! - Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order cover)

Amber Asylum - Cardinal Sin (Dead Can Dance cover)

Dark Sanctuary - Summoning of the Muse (Dead Can Dance cover)

Tapping the Vein - Cornflake Girl (Tori Amos cover)

Lord Belial - The Trooper (Iron Maiden cover)

Oh, and as a bonus, a musician that does a spot-on impression of System of a Down did Britney Spears' Toxic as a SoaD song.

If System Of A Down wrote 'Toxic'

Another favorite: Miss Piggy sings Never on Sunday. Hilarious imitation of Melina Mercouri from the superb 1960 movie.

My favorite genre twist: The Muppets perform George Gershwin's Swanee with a pig oom-pah band.

Has anyone tried it with the lyrics "Vi... vek, Rama-swamy Rama-swamy, my Rama-swamy"?

H/T MAD magazine for twisting Swanee into Swami 😺

Chico Marx's wonderful cover of Victor Herbert's Gypsy Love Song in The Cocoanuts (1929)

The video has high-quality Chico covers from ten Marxist films 🎹

Roy Scheider and Ben Vereen sing Bye Bye Life in All That Jazz (1979). Brilliant!

Leon Redbone -- Champagne Charlie

I've posted Champagne Charlie before, but it's one of my favorite covers. The song began as an English music hall number in 1866 and was very popular. Leon Redbone sings Blind Blake's 1932 blues version which is quite different from the original.

Don't tell anyone, but I used to be a big Olivia Newton-John fan.

What can I say. I was young. Of course my tastes have changed a little over the years.

Your taste used to be so much better 😄

Again, what can I say. Listening to Olivia Newton-John won't help me get through a boring day of work, or help me stay awake on the drive home.

You have to imagine it like the sonic equivalent of a Michael Bay Transformers movie. The non-stop in-your-face noise and violence becomes poetic at a certain point.
