    We would rather have to have some sort of numbers for years past to know if the present situation is unusual.

    I'm not sure there really are good numbers for this sort of thing. It's like trying to ascertain the GDP of China. There's so many layers of lies it's very difficult to see the exact truth.

    If there are no good numbers, how can we possibly say the current situation is an unusual “epidemic?”

      Well the fact something horrific is so commonplace certainly qualifies as an "epidemic" in my book. Most people are under the conception this is a rare thing, not something in the 5-digit number of victims range

        I see. So normal conditions would be an epidemic, if it were sufficiently widespread? In that case we are suffering an epidemic of dental cavities, the most common ailment.

          The only way it can be fixed, and can end for future victims, is if we talk about it first. If we hide it because it is too painful, then we are essentially deciding that we will allow it to continue. It is very important to expose these things, even if they're very uncomfortable to mention sometimes.
