Sure, some of them stick to other Asians from the same country as them, but many of them want to step out of their comfort zone and not stick to their own kind. This often means befriending whites. Despite how many western countries have a significant local Asian population, many of these Asian exchange students seem ignorant of that. They mainly befriend whites or other non-full Asians and I've even heard of some having a "no Asian policy" where they refuse to befriend other Asians. If they are allocated to stay with Asian host families or paired up with westernised Asians as roommates, many will feel disappointed as they feel "robbed" of a true "western" experience.
It's sad when they see westernised Asians as perpetual foreigners in the West. Also, most friendships involving people living in two different countries don't last anyway.
