The tail was damaged, not sure how, we got him that way, but this morning I noticed the damaged tip was gone. I was worried about where I'd find it, but he seems to have left it on a paper towel for me.

Oh, yikes, you found it! At least he dropped it right into a paper towel! thumbs up

I was relieved to find it. There was a bright pink nub of new skin on the end, but now it looks mottled again. I'm a little worried he's actually just chewing his tail off or there's something wrong, possibly fungal. I'm going to keep an eye on it.

Maybe take him to a vet, make sure there's nothing wrong. If there is, the vet'll be able to figure it out within minutes. If not, he's good.

I will if it doesn't get better with a quickness. A vet visit runs about $300 here, it's not something I want to do to just be told it'll heal on its own.

Understood. You're right. If he's not biting or licking it and he isn't in pain, things should be ok. And if he seems happy and active, that's good. Sorry to panic!
