    Having a local or source repo is important.

    A lot of people writing software now look at themselves as some arbiter of morality and truth.

    A great example of this is Firefox.. Their recent manifesto reads something essentially like; "yeh we realize it's open source software, but we believe the purpose of our software is equally if not more important than the quality of code".

    This leads to things like, well if you voted for Trump or are a Republican you're a Nazi and you shouldn't be able to use our software.

    It's the same issue like guns. We know what's best for you, it's for your own good we are keeping you from these things, you're a bigot.

      I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to ban VCRs at this point. They want to rewrite history, so any evidence of the past is dangerous to their agenda.

      And video tapes can't be automatically and comprehensively revised as files on computers can be.

      Yep. That's one of my greatest fears, that all of our information will inevitably be stored in such an easily modifiable format.

      What happens when there are no books? What happens when the only source of information is Big Tech Company™? What happens when this company can rewrite the past, change the meaning of words, and dictate the distinction between reality and fiction?

      Taking the way that our tools are an extension of ourselves, books and the Internet are an extension of our memories. If they are controlled, it's modifying people's memories. These are an essential foundation for meaningful action in the world. Chilling.

      Wasn't the whole point of using the centralized site for source code hosting and management to make it easier for a random Github\Microsoft employee to remove anything they don't like? One press of button and you deleted someone's repository and all their forks. How cool is that?

      Now if only we had a distributed version control system where each user has a local working copy and the full change history... wait a minute.
