Those " trusted FBI " numbers are really some thing to think about....

You have raised a really good question and I gave it some thought before posting. Are you suggesting that a government agency might lie to us? Whahahaha. But seriously, if anyone has other statistics please post them. In a country of 330 million people, who else besides the FBI keeps up with these numbers? Here's a question: if you wanted to tweak these numbers to create maximum turmoil in the US, how would you do it?

Actually they're protesting police violence against blacks specifically, not white-on-black violence in general. Although there is a sort of "mission creep" happening that is over-generalizing things to drive racial divisions

Good points and I like that phrase mission creep. I've been thinking about this and these numbers must come from convictions. Duh. But the thing is, not very many cops are convicted for killing blacks or whites because it's not really murder if a cop does it, right? Sarcasm there. I wonder if the FBI even included deaths-by-police in these statistics.

Who knows. What blows my mind is the FBI didn't even keep these statistics about police killings, at all! They were like deliberately ignoring and not gathering info on the situation even though that's like their whole job. So random 3rd parties have to compile news articles to figure out the truth

So this table needs two more bars: blacks killed by police and whites killed by police. But then, as you said, the data is not available.

[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

It's available from 3rd parties.

But the reality is an American is 50x more likely to be killed by a cop than a European is. And if you're black American, put another 2.5x on top of the 50x. So the 2.5x is a problem, which BLM focuses on, but I worry about the 50x more personally, because it affects all Americans

[–]hennaojichan[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

That 50x is a chilling statistic.

Yeah it's messed up, and I honestly don't know how there isn't national unity around fixing this issue. It seems the only thing preventing it from being fixed are over-powered police unions and police lobby, and corrupted justice systems, and a corporate media that keeps people divided by race rather than unifying to fix shared problems. The more clearly I see it, the more disturbing it becomes.

Excuse the lag there. Not sure this is even relevant but over here the police have guns but they should be used only for self-defense. If a cop fires his gun it will be on the front page of every newspaper in the country the next day. And that cop had better have a very good excuse. I do not even remember one case where someone was shot and killed by the police. But there are lots of cases where, for example, four police go to a house to arrest someone and that person just runs away. The police can't shoot a person for running away or even if they see a robbery in progress. Of course, race is not an issue here and it is a different country.

I think you summed up the situation well but I do not see a quick solution.

the recent raynard guy who was shot by cops, I ead the article on it, ok he was drunk in a drive thru, ok he attacked a cop and grabbed the taser, ok sounds bad, but he ran away and was shot twice in the back? Stops being self defense there doesn't it. Sucks to have to chase him on foot but sorry cops you have to do that not shoot. Guilty of murder here.

Are you intentionally leaving out the facts verifiable by video, that Raynard not just attacked the cop, stole the taser, THE ENTIRE TIME IGNORING LAWFUL ORDERS TO STOP, then as he's running away TURNS AROUND and aims the stolen taser at the pursuing cops (which was also in the direction of the citizen vehicles in the drive-thru) AND FIRES IT? The cops are required by law to stop him by any and all means necessary at that point. Their lives and the lives of citizens were in danger. Tasers are AT BEST less-than-lethal. At worst, they have killed people. Officers are aware of this, and will respond as if it IS a lethal firearm.

Also the white bum who was probably drunk too got about fifteen rounds for just bad-mouthing the cops so at least in that case there was no discrimination. I mean here: https://breakthematrix.com/homeless-lives-matter-white-homeless-man-executed-by-four-police-officers-at-bus-stop/ That shook me up and I will remember not to sleep on the sidewalk in the daytime. Shouldn't joke.

an American is 50x more likely to be killed by a cop than a European

how about compared to countries with similar demographics?

[–]hennaojichan[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I posted this about a month ago but we all need a periodic reality check.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

it's the only thing there they could protest, they don't care about whites dying, and they can't protest against themselves for killing blacks.

[–]kissfan7 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

I think the problem is that a lot of killers in the second category are a) tax-payer funded and b) get away with it.

[–]hennaojichan[S] 7 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

A valid point but in the current environment any murder of a black by a white will probably get way more news coverage than the murder of a white by anyone. An example from today's front page is: https://breakthematrix.com/homeless-lives-matter-white-homeless-man-executed-by-four-police-officers-at-bus-stop/ If the bum had been black there would have been national outrage and rightly so. But, as is, he is just some white bum who was sleeping on the sidewalk and was executed by four white cops because he told them to get fucked. Will this story make the evening news? I doubt it. (Well, it did happen like last August.)

[–]kissfan7 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

So, change that.

If black people can start BLM, you can start MILM; Mentally Ill Lives Matter.

Of course the work done by BLM also helps white people not be victimized by the criminal justice system, so a second movement may be unnecessary.

[–]hennaojichan[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't have connections to the Republican Party like BLM has to the Democrats.

[–]beermeem 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

However, there are more of those killers in the 3rd category, so...
