I could go to the local college and audit any class I like.
but a parent can not even 'eavesdrop' on what their own children are being taught?

math teacher: "...so two plus two equals five, for extremely large values of two..."

seems legit.

I would enjoy auditing a seventh grade girls volleyball practice class, and definitely i want to audit the showering session after the game..

it would be nice to let the girls know that we have an interest in their well being.

To audit a college class, you need usually permission from the professor and must pay tuition for the class.

yep, that's how it's done!

It would cause unrest because parents would phone the school constantly concerning what a teacher said, did, or didn't do in class.

source? Do you have a link to a peer-reviewed article? Nice anecdote, bro.

The source of the complaints would most likely be the parents.

An anecdote is a "a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person."

I did not provide an anecdote but rather just a general statement which may or may not be true. It's just my opinion.

As a teacher I am very happy when parents get involved in their kid's education, however there have been some situations that are detrimental to learning:

  • Parent is sitting next to the student during video lecture, distracts them and the rest of class by talking, often giving out answers to the student or making snide comments about other students or their houses.
  • Parent helps student during exam.
  • Entire family sits around watching lecture, making some students too nervous to participate during class discussions.
  • Students from well-known families uncomfortable with other families recording them during lessons.
  • Parent harassing their kid during class to participate more or take notes differently.

My school has regular lecture and discussion events where the whole family is welcome, but I want my students to be able to focus on classwork while we are in class. I'm not teaching any political agenda during math class. If this is a concern in their other classes, they should definitely take it up with administration.

    I think this is it.

Trust isn't there. Trust between teachers and students is eroded in the USA.

It's not like this in other countries. Trust is there in most classes.

I get parents listening in. It's kind of annoying. I'm trying to adapt.

It's still a major power grab from me as a teacher. Anyone could record me, probably take what I say out of context/manipulate and probably get me banged up somehow. Likewise, anyone with access can record what these kids say and use it against them in 30 years time when they're running for president.

The correct approach in this instance would be to have them sign a waiver that they will not disturb the lectures or aid their children in exams. Perhaps some other provisions as well, but the point is that it should be concise, not vague, so that the content of the lecture isn't being concealed.

You don't have a right to separate parents from their kids. They are not your kids and you don't know what is best for them.

And how is that supposed to work when the parent's aren't allowed to know what is being taught in the class? Obviously no one is going to include "brainwashing" in the syllabus.

If the kids use Chromebooks and Google Docs with a school account, the teachers have access to when they posted their work and how many changes were made. Parents can't see this shit, but teachers can? That's fucked up.

I agree its bullshit, but you can go into the privacy settings and change if they can see what/how many times you edited it (cant remember if the time date it was posted was also an option). If my kid had to do this, I'd go in there and make the privacy as secure as I could

It's not eavesdropping if you record it, and then watch it later.

A parent could claim they were looking for "Terrorist Activity" like the NSA.

That is wire tapping and they would absolutely love if you did that and admitted it.

How is it that he majority of parents are stupid enough to go along with this? Why is the school board not being immediately reformed?

Home school for the motherfucking win. Avoid the indoctrination. If you can't do it yourself, find other parents around you and voluntarily form a cooperative where you help each other out with childcare, etc. Where there is a will, there is a way, and this Prussian model of socialist indoctrination has caused more than a little bit of bullshit.
