Multiple European Union states are breaking with post-war liberal conventions and openly imprisoning prominent political opponents and intellectuals for ideological crimes.

The tactic being used by these governments is “rule through law,” as opposed to rule of law. The strategy is commonly deployed in nations like Saudi Arabia against journalists, intellectuals and opposition figures who are targeted for repression first, then selectively prosecuted using often vaguely defined existing laws after.

The decision to arrest Golden Dawn’s parliament members was made in 2013 by the conservative government of New Democracy, led by Antonis Samaras, who decided to make the highly controversial move shortly after a meeting with the World Jewish Congress and other American and European Jewish organizations. Benjamin Netanyahu, Shimon Peres, and other Israeli officials also lauded the crackdown.

Greek law grants members of parliament with legal immunity, a clause that has allowed the political class to get away with decades of rampant corruption and crime. Shortly before the arrests, the communist, liberal and conservative parties in the Hellenic parliament voted to strip Golden Dawn members of this right while keeping it for themselves. The Greek state is considered one of the most corrupt in Europe, with a corruption perception index of 48 — higher than African nations like Senegal (45).

The prosecutorial theory behind declaring Golden Dawn a criminal organization asserts that it is a National Socialist organization, thus it adheres to the Leader Principle (Fuhrerprinzip). Lawyers representing the state argued that this makes Nikos Michaloliakos and the rest of the party’s leadership personally responsible for everything their members and supporters do.

These parties were a dead-end anyway.

Your criticism is correct. Actually most supporters had left Golden Dawn for similar reasons. But still, the way "justice" is used against members and former members of the party is only complimentary to the current climate against nationalists, patriots and conservatives, where you can be attacked in the street or have your property damaged and your attackers will be instantly justified if they claim you are a "fascist".

So while the party was destined to fail due to its leadership and its wrong direction, there should also be awareness about the current events and the imprisonment of people based on strictly ideological grounds.
