Notice how opportune this is for globohomo. Instead of getting their remaining people out, the bombing can effectively serve as an excuse for attempting to delay ('we've been interrupted, we need more time!') as well as an excuse for taking more Afghans with them ('See! There really is a threat! So we must take more Afghans!). Two birds with one stone. The Islamic State, who I've barely heard anything about in two years, suddenly seem to be wheeled out yet again right on time to serve a role as a bogeyman to justify staying longer and taking more people.

Indeed, I can't even figure out what Islamic State's Wilayat Khorasan branch would do this for, as it doesn't seem to benefit them in any obvious way at all. Surely they understand that it will at the very least encourage the West to stay longer, and at most, it may lead Western states to overcome their general aversion to war and decide that they need to re-enter for some time. What's the word for things like this? 'False flag' is one. How about 'gay op'?

I guess the closest explanation I can come up with is that maybe they know that those trying to flee tend towards being the worst type of Afghans (trannies, queers, feminists) and they want to get as many of these people as they can before they escape to the West where they'll be beyond reach. Either way, Afghanistan (part of Wilayat Khorasan in IS' terminology) would be rid of them whether they were killed or not, and it seems like letting them fly away is less risky. They believe that Allah will cast them all eventually into Hell anyway, so it does not make much sense to take such a large risk just to send them there sooner.

There's essentially a nationalist Islamism against a colourblind globalist Jihadism clash here. Islamic State is extreme-Left on race (I read recently that they burned all books in Mosul University back in 2014-16 that contained mentions of race or ethnicity, although such works weren't their only targets), whereas the Taliban are essentially "Pashtun First".

I'll be paying attention to how the Taliban change the education system in Afghanistan. They definitely have a 'Gender Studies' program in Kabul University (see: https://web.archive.org/web/20201023003233/https://feminist.org/news/kabul-university-to-open-first-gender-studies-program-in-afghanistan/), and I'm sure that it will be one of those fields abolished and everyone involved in propagating it in serious trouble. Good riddance. Islamic State removed almost all of higher education excepting a few hard science fields like chemistry (in Mosul University, they tried to turn the chemistry faculty into a chemical weapons production plant) at the universities they controlled in Iraq/Syria. The Humanities and Social Sciences were basically abolished with the obvious exception of Islamic Studies. Most of those fields are certainly no loss—'Gender Studies', 'Black Studies' and 'Indigenous Studies' are clearly unscientific, are not accepted as sciences even in today's Clown World, and should be axed everywhere. The rest of the Social Sciences and Humanities also need a serious clean-up. If you've ever studied Sociology you'll know the whole field has shifted from Far-Right to Far-Left over the course of its 170 or so years of existence.

Theres no indication that the U.S. will stay beyond its stated deadline. Not yet, anyway.

I haven't heard of anything yet either, but this provides all Western countries currently there—not just Americans—with a golden opportunity to make a case for staying, particularly with the Western media putting a huge amount of attention on this bombing right now.

Now, I don't think they'll stay either, because I don't think the new Taliban rulers want them there. They want the West out, and then they need to eliminate both the non-Pashtun "National Resistance Front" rebels up north along the Tajik border and Jihadist opponents. The rebels appear to be supported by the Indian media which is exaggerating their accomplishments, just as the collapsing government was supported by India donating large amounts of equipment, all of which was swiftly abandoned and now belongs to the Taliban (or Iran, with plenty of troops fleeing across the Iranian border), but they look like they'll be crushed soon. It is said that the Chinese media is already praising the Taliban, thus taking the opposite side of the Indian media.

So all I can see happening is either:

  • A sudden invasion threat is made, which leads the Taliban rulers to extend the deadline because they know they would swiftly lose what they've spent two decades trying to regain if they refused, or;

  • A bungled evacuation with some people who were supposed to be evacuated literally left behind. I think this will be the likely outcome past August 31.

I've also heard that the US and the Taliban are sharing information to fight Islamic State. Could be just a wild theory doing the rounds.

The POS Biden is currently blowing hot air over the dead Americans. "We will not forgive. We will not forget." Yeah, whatever, Joe. Did he learn that one from Anonymous?

[–]literalotherkinNorm MacDonald Nationalism 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

That's not a risk you idiot and if more soldiers had access to the info we do and understood that they were risking their lives for absolutely nothing then we'd have less wars and less dead soldiers not more. We're their friends not phony creeps like you who want them half way across the world dying to 'make life better for the Afghanis'.

You're actually sickening when you do this phony 'support the troops' lie and your reasons are transparent.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Did I claim that we should "support the troops"? That's not what's at issue. The issue - which you seem to have missed entirely - is that the response to dozens of people losing their lives in a suicide bomb aattack shouldn't be to piss all over their dead bodies (by saying that they died in a gay way). Secondly, the soldiers obviously died while helping people, as have thousands of other soldiers over the past 20 years. They did not die in vain. Why does this have to be explained to you? It's really ironic that you'd refer to me as an idiot in this context. Even if both of us are incredibly stupid - let's consider - only one of us insists on pissing on the victims of a suicide bombing.

[–]literalotherkinNorm MacDonald Nationalism 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

They died for nothing is my opinion and in a colloquial school yard use of that term that's pretty 'gay'. That's my opinion and the opinion of many others here. Im not 'pissing on them' I want them safe and at home helping their country not guarding poppy fields, defending child rapists and making sure women can study crap at Kabul university. In other words I want what's best for them. You want them half way across the world dying for this shit. You are their enemy; I'm their friend.

Does anyone here have sympathy for these soldiers? Within a year of invasion, we knew the mission in Afghanistan was over--Bin Laden escaped to Pakistan and the Taliban was all but defeated yet, the war continued. The mission in Iraq was also bullshit because weapons of mass destruction did not exist. However, even with ALL of this PUBLIC information, Americans continued to sign up for the military and many of those signed up because they wanted to deploy in the Sandbox. That means these people signed up to go slaughter innocent Afghani and Iraqi civilians--what other reason could they have? Does an economic opportunity provide a valid excuse for those who signed up voluntarily to slaughter innocent people (GI Bill, etc)? In my opinion, because the information about these wars was wide-spread and PUBLIC--everyone who signed up to serve in these wars is complicent in this debacle and deserving of ZERO sympathy.

If you’re expecting the masses to make informed decisions based on their own research, then you’re going to be forever disappointed. That’s just not how most humans (especially high trust, conforming societies like Europe) evolved. It’s a great trait to have when your leaders are good people, but devastating when they’re a hostile foreign entity.

The only people to blame are the enemy, and ourselves for not trying harder

I’m not American & I don’t really know how your class culture works over there. From what I have heard it’s a lot less ingrained & the lines are more blurry than in Britain, and a lot more Americans identify as middle class even if they’re quite poor.

Maybe that would explain some of it. I’d also guess there’s a lot more poor white rural types staffing your frontline infantry units and a lot more rich kids, overweight black women, etc sitting behind desks in glorified office jobs in their bases.

In the UK the vast majority of soldiers are from white working class communities (officers are 90+% rich kids). They’re just normal lads like myself & the people I grew up with. They’re not ‘zogbots’.

Yes I definitely have sympathy for soldiers but none for the officers or politicians. Most of the effective core of the army are young working class whites who have very little options and see the army as a way to learn a trade, get an education and serve their country. In a perfect world these young men would be doing honourable service for their country like most of their ancestors have. I don't blame them at all I blame a system that leaves them few other options. I definitely would tell any young man NOT to join the armed forces because like we say they will just be fighting ZOG wars for women's rights, Israel and homosexuality but many just don't know that.

That being said many on the DR are former soldiers who realised we are right because of their experiences in the armed forces.

Top post in /r/all is this

Can anyone explain why this is not among the cruelest responses to the sacrifices of those Marines, as well as Afghans? (Perhaps this way of thinking was one reason M7 removed DAR from /r/all? This post mirrors the opinions of ISIS members.)

Oh boy, look who decided to resort to a pseudo-patriotic faux-outrage today! I bet anything if those dead Marines were found to be Republicans you wouldn't be sperging out like this. No way, you'd be cheering!

Your attempts to get this off s/all aren't going to take off. This post has 9 insightfuls and 2 using 'fun' either as an alternative upvote or as a downvote. In other words, few or perhaps nobody agrees with your stupid view about this post. That is, of course, why you are drawing attention to it—hoping that a faux-outrage will lead to the moderators taking action against this sub more generally. It is the same reason why you sperged out real good when you were banned for less than a day from here.

Here's the best thing any reader can do today: block socks. If you hate Redditors, well, this guy has been one for many years. It is the single best thing you can do on this site.

Yep. His goal is simply to try to get this sub off of s/all and preferably banned. This is why he has to raise these faux-outrages, similar to how he wrote a winding post when he was banned from this sub for less than a day. He was, of course, trying to get the admins to believe that this sub was not abiding by the rules required to remain on s/all. He seems like one of those AHS types trying to 'deplatform hate' or some nonsense. He will continue to do this bullshit with the aim of trying to deplatform the sub. I've obviously triggered him real good with his response below this. I mean just look at how angry he is! Probably because my comments land far too close to the truth.

It's just the tribalism in America. The Democrats have taken ownership of the same war that they used to call the result of 'Right-wing, Republican warmongers' or outright 'racists wanting excuses to bomb browns', because quitting it reminds them of the weak idiots they are. Now all of a sudden many of them defend the continuation of the same damn war. Luckily I don't think these people are going to win out in that regard.

It's no different to how they were all anti-vax until Biden was elected, when they suddenly and mindlessly flipped to being pro-vax. They flip their view on a wide range of issues based on who is in power and nothing else. If Trump was there right now and wanted to stay, they'd all be pro-withdrawal instead.

They sacrificed their lives for nothing. The blood is on the hands of the people who began the war. The people who began the war are nearly as sickening as the people crying crocodile tears now over the fate of the poor Afghanis and soldiers now. Where were they when the thousands of soldiers who have died in this God forsaken hell hole for no conceivable reason? Where were you? I'd Ike to see ONE post you've made weeping for the soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq before today. The only kind response to this whole decades long disaster is complete withdrawal and only disgusting cynics are asking people to weep over this.

The only kindness in war is a swift ending and that's what we're finally getting. If you think it's cruel to realize these soldiers died for nothing along with the thousands of others who died -- not to mention the Afghanis -- then go weep your eyes out with bill kristol, Lindsay Graham and Jenny Rubin.

No - his comments are crystal clear. He also wrote in short sentences so that others like you could potentially understand.

Many in Afghanistan had better lives and opportunities in the past 20 years thanks to the Allied presence. The Trump Admin decision to abandon them and thus support the Taliban is what caused this escalation of violence. The Trump Admin's deep ties with Israel, Russia, Turkey, China, and Pakistan also prompted this withdrawal, which will directly benefit those countries. The Marines sacrificed themselves for Afghanis. They're heroes. It's that simple, regardless of one's anger about US geopolitics (though I doubt you care or have given this any serious thought.)

I could use a drink - after today's series of arguments - but I rarely touch the stuff. One of my favorites is Woodford Reserve, though I also like Macallan and Balvenie triple cask, and I actually prefer red wine. I've become so accustomed to people arguing with me - often with insults - that I figure they want to see a response from me in the form of arguments and similar insults. Rather mixed results today, however. :-)

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't why you bother, people are dicks to you here and it's not like you're changing anyone's minds. I don't even read it anymore. I skip over the fights.

Balvenie is good everything they make. It's just a good all around scotch everyone can enjoy. Sometimes people want to dismiss it as "basic" but whatever, who cares what they think.

I buy that kinda shit for other people. It's too expensive to just get drunk off of. I prefer Volska, it's a bottom shelf vodka but it's clean and cheap. It's no fine whiskey but it does what you need it to.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes. Thanks. I was genuinely curious if anyone at DAR could offer a reasonable explanation for saying the Marines died in a gay way, because the post had received a lot of upvotes. I shouldn't have been surprised by some of the responses, but I wanted to respond because I think some on Saidit speak with the same language as religious fundamentalists, without thinking about the human or associated costs. I should take a break.

I agree regarding Balvenie, which I think was the first to offer a triple cask option, which initially I could only locate in the UK.

I like that vodka seems to go well with any flavoring, or even with coffee. There was a Van Gogh vodka that was mixed with coffee. For what it's worth, here is a list of vodkas I discussed recently with a Ukranian friend, followed by three favorites:

Derevenskaya Samogonka (also called Pervach; Samogon is a derivative)

Golden Lion (can't find this one, but was given the name in English)

Zolotoe runo (English trans: Golden Fleece)

Zolotoye Koltso (Golden Ring) by Kristall

    Pshinichnaya

Stolichnaya (must be the original [i.e. not poddelka]), 'Stolichnaya Noch'

    Flagman

    Flargship

Gzhelka (Cristall) <DM> (popular in Tver, Russia)

    Dovgan

    Smirnovskaya (not Smirnoff), 'Suharnichek'

Ukrainian Gorilka (red pepper vodka - [not black pepper])

Peisahovka (Jewish, 60% alcohol, sweet flavour)

    Perzovka (a pepper vodka)

    Saproshin (Topaz factory)

    Kutskova

    Russky Standart (Russian Standard)

vodka from Arkhangelsk (mellower water used)

vodka from Tverj and Tambov (snow water used)

vodka from Rostov on Don (honey vodka - no headache in the morning)

    Grey Gooze

    Charka

    Istok

    Gospoga Oficeri

    Red Army

    Ikon (no hangovers)

The favorites have been: Derevenskaya Samogonka (also called Pervach), Flagman (#2), Gzhelka (#3), and what we actually drink most often: Grey Gooze.

Thanks for the response - which at least offers some form of explanation.

The problem is that - regardless of who started the war, who supported the war, and the many other circumstances of the war - the tragic deaths of people in the bombing has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with any of it, nor does it warrant this: "Marines die in the gayest way possible." What explains that kind of comment? Nothing that I know of.

Moreover - ISIS said they planted the bomb. Which countries supported ISIS in Syria and the region in recent years? Did you know that the US and Israel partially supported them with weapon supplies and that Isreal and Lebanon arranged for the purchase of priceless artefacts from them? Should ISIS be exterminated? Should those who support ISIS be exterminated? Should those who make comments like - Marines die in the gayest way possible - be exterminated? What do you think? I'm obviously wanting all of these people to be dealt with appropriately.

The Marines and the allies have not died in vain, and have supported a better way of life for Afghanis for 20 years.

Is this a troll or are you drunk? "The Marines and the allies have not died in vain, and have supported a better way of life for Afghanis for 20 years."

That statement is factually untrue. The military industrial complex turned Afghanistan into one giant fucking grift. Every facet of the puppet government was rife with corruption/crime and that corruption spilled out into the general public and became the largest industry in the country. In addition, only a very small minority of Afghanis wanted to promote and legalize the values of Globohomo: homosexuality and transgenderism. I'm sure all the Afghani widows and orphans are really thankful the marines stayed for 20 years to create, "A better way of life for Afghanis."

Yes - of course there were problems - which are unavoidable in that part of the world. The Allies were there for a relatively limited purpose. There were some benefits to their presence, which don't bear mentioning here, especially in light of your cherry-picking superfluous concerns like 'Globohomo' which isn't in the vocabulary or interest of most people, especially in Afghanistan. This topic of Middle East geopolitics is obviously not your specialism.

That's right, our military mission was destined to fail once it switched from the destruction of Al-Qaeda and the Taliban to so-called, "Nation Building." As you said yourself, (I'll paraphrase) very few Afghanis have shared cultural interests with the West.

If you use an internet search app to find the information, you'd know that the lives of women improved substantially in 20 years, and that your tax dollars paid for billions in reconstruction source. There were many additional benefits. And of course there were problems. That was not unexpected in that region. See also this.

Can anyone explain why this is not among the cruelest responses to the sacrifices of those Marines,

First you'd haven't to make the affirmative argument. Why is it 'cruel' to say these marines died in a gay way? There is no higher way to honor a soldier then saying that they should die for legit and noble causes. The comment is directed at the mission not the soldier. (there are legit criticism of soldiers though but that can be for another thread)

Also calling a statement cruel and 'shaming' someone for their tone is tone policing and it's not allowed here. You've been warned about it and temp banned for it.

edit. I now I just saw you told someone to kill themselves in another part of this thread. Do you have anything to say for yourself publicly on DAR before I ban you?

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (52 children)

You've always wanted to ban me, so no surprise there.

It is NOT tone policing to ask the question in a debate sub: "why this is not among the cruelest responses to the sacrifices of those Marines, as well as Afghans"? Moreover, tone policing potentially relates to anything in a debate, especially at Saidit, where you can see responses to my posts that are essentially tone policing, claiming that I'm making these comments because I am a faggot, or Chinese, or ESL (?), or a trans women, or whatever. Obviously, this isn't the most mature of places, and no one really follows the guidelines, as you should know by now. A claim of tone policing against someone is an easy way to avoid debate and personal responsibility. Let's consider the question without the "tone" you refer to. Is it a fact that "Marines die in the gayest way possible" in the recent bombing? No, it's not a fact. If you want to say that the gay comment references the mission, rather than the soldier, this is just not true. What is more heroic than trying to help people to safety and potentially a better life elsewhere, while in a war zone, and however dying for your sacrifice because of a religious fundamentalist suicide bomber? Moreover, because of the ISIS religious hatred in this case, the soldiers are also martyrs, in several religious contexts. What would be a gay way to die? I don't know?: when doing something that's gay. It just makes no sense. And what kind of opinion is the phrase, "Marines die in the gayest way possible"? I don't know. Hence, I asked DAR. Is it not a cruel response to their sacrifices? This I wanted DAR members to answer. Some of them offered answers. Some of them didn't follow Saidit or DAR guidelines. Hence it's a normal form of "debate" on Saidit. Do whatever you want.

Do I not have the right to respond at the same level of the pyramid to your insults? Am I to be nice to you when you insult me? Think about that for a second. When you insulted me, you lowered the discourse to the bottom of the POD. Any response from me - at the same level as your comment - or furher up the pyramid, did not break the rules. I was not the original one to lower the discourse; you were. Consider the golden rule and follow Saidit's rules (or think about the feelings of others, or think about not bullying others) and no one will have the right to respond with insults.

Moreover - let's look at your first response to me, where there are insults:

The people who began the war are nearly as sickening as the people crying crocodile tears now over the fate of the poor Afghanis and soldiers now.

Those would be my crocadile tears, correct? Did you hurt my feelings?

Where were they when the thousands of soldiers who have died in this God forsaken hell hole for no conceivable reason? Where were you?

Another insult? I've organized and attended protests in London, where there were over 100,000 people on two occasions, and 10s of thousands on other occasions. I also paid to support musicians from Afghanistan leave their countries and go on tour.

I'd Ike to see ONE post you've made weeping for the soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq before today.

Another insult, where you question my honesty?

If you think it's cruel to realize these soldiers died for nothing along with the thousands of others who died -- not to mention the Afghanis -- then go weep your eyes out with bill kristol, Lindsay Graham and Jenny Rubin.

And the worst kind of insult, comparing me to the assholes, Kristol and Graham. I don't know who Rubin is.

(I was indeed responding to your insults.)

I was kidding. Calm down. Also none of the other things in my original response are personal insults that lower the tone they're observations.

As usual you won't take responsibility for your own behaviour.

        I was kidding. Calm down.

There is absolutely nothing in your posts - other than "silly goose" - that indicates that you are kidding about anything.

Also none of the other things are personal insults that lower the tone they're observations.

        Yes, they are.

As usual you won't take responsibility for your own behaviour.

Name something you want me to "take responsibility" for. I am kindly responding to your abuses and accusations. What exactly are you expecting after you've insulted someone in ALL of your responses? Should I say: thank you for calling me a faggot. Have a wonderful day.

What exactly are you expecting after you've insulted someone in ALL of your responses?

Not much. You should really be asking yourself that question though, Socks.

Also this is my final word on the matter and it's a response to a mod:

Dude it's totally fine. We traded insults. Don't ban him [socks] on account of me and I was just kidding when I said it hurt my feelings. I know it wasn't a threat or anything it's just internet bantz. All I'm trying to point out to him is that he started insulting people so he got the same back so he shouldn't complain nothing else.

        [–]literalotherkinNorm MacDonald Nationalism 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Take responsibility for the fact that YOU started insulting people last night. It's a simple point and it's undeniable.

Also no nothing in my original comment to you before you started with the low tier insults was a personal insult.

What exactly are you expecting after you've insulted someone in ALL of your responses?

You called me a 'fucking idiot', I called you a 'faggot'. You're the only one whining and trying to make up lies about 'look mommy, the bad men insulted me first.'

You started the insults last night. Just accept it, stop lying and move on.

I'm an adult male I don't go around complaining if people hurt my feelings. Hopefully any other reader would understand that but if you can't then so be it. Be pedantic and continue lying and playing the victim.

Any response from me - at the same level as your comment - or furher up the pyramid, did not break the rules. I was not the original one to lower the discourse; you were.

This is my first comment to you before I went to bed last night:

This is your first response to me to a comment which wasn't directed at you:

No they've not - you fucking idiot.

YOU started the insults, hypocrite. YOU LOWERED THE TONE. You got exactly what you deserve and acted in the exact same way you complain others do.

        Don't make up lies.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

As I think you've now seen, I responded to the insults in your first post here. And when you compare me with Kristol and Graham, the gloves are obviously off.

When you tell me that I am making up lies, that's another insult.

In any event, my main concern was not about your insults in the first post, but about your comment that "they sacrificed their lives for nothing." They've not. The insults about crocodile tears just made it worse. It's not phony for someone to mourn the loss of those lives.

        [–]literalotherkinNorm MacDonald Nationalism 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Comparing you to Kristol and Graham -- and the comparison is apt in this case -- is not a personal insult.

When you tell me that I am making up lies, that's another insult.

        Stop making up lies then.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yes, it is an insult. And the comparison is definitely not 'apt', which is another insult. Nor have I lied, which is another insult. Now let's see, how many insults have I received from all of your posts? A bunch. Thank you so much for all of the insults. I've been asked to let you know that I don't want you to kill yourself, and that I am sorry for suggesting it. My apologies.

        [–]send_nasty_stuffNational Socialist 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

You've always wanted to ban me, so no surprise there.

I'm literally the only mod that voted to let you come back after that first ban. We tried to give you a chance because many of your posts at least had evidence and reasoning. However, telling people to kill themselves is unacceptable.

It is NOT tone policing to ask the question in a debate sub: "why this is not among the cruelest responses to the sacrifices of those Marines, as well as Afghans"?

You're not getting banned for that.

Moreover, tone policing potentially relates to anything in a debate, especially at Saidit, where you can see responses to my posts that are essentially tone policing, claiming that I'm making these comments because I am a faggot, or Chinese, or ESL (?), or a trans women, or whatever.

None of those people called to have you killed. It was just adhominem which you also engage in all the time. Low pyramid adhominem is not a ban offense. If it was you also would have been gone a long time ago.

Let's consider the question without the "tone" you refer to. Is it a fact that "Marines die in the gayest way possible" in the recent bombing? No, it's not a fact. If you want to say that the gay comment references the mission, rather than the soldier, this is just not true

Then you should have leveled these issues with OP in a civilized way instead of coming into this thread like a wrecking ball.

What is more heroic than trying to help people to safety and potentially a better life elsewhere, while in a war zone, and however dying for your sacrifice because of a religious fundamentalist suicide bomber?

This would have made for a great debate and a lot of people would have engaged you. You didn't seem to want to have a real debate though.

Some of them didn't follow Saidit or DAR guidelines.

        And neither did you.

Some of them didn't follow Saidit or DAR guidelines.

You're the only one that called for violence though. You're welcome to make an apology in a separate thread. But there's no expectation here that people are not going to throw insults around. That's not something we'd ban you or anybody else for because everyone occasionally engages in it. It's only when it's a pattern that it becomes a problem. Just ignore people that do adhominem.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I'm literally the only mod that voted to let you come back after that first ban.

        Thank you.

I've always liked debates, and there are some on DAR who will genuinely make an effort to debate and sometimes surprise me with good arguments. And occasionally I'll respond to verious people in one thread, as happened today, and the number of thread comments surpass 100. Not that this is an excuse but: I'm obviously upset about Afghanistan, and I don't want to respond kindly to users who repeatedly call me names, especially in the context of the recent bombing. The Taliban have been in the process of erasing much of Afghanistan's impressive culture, as have ISIS, and the US and Israel have helped both groups develop. I've never liked the US military presence in Afghanistan, and protested in 2001 against sending troops there, but I also don't like the way in which the US has abandoned its supporters in various wars, twice in Iraq, recently in Syria, and now in Afghanistan. It's been a pattern of abuse for over a century. I am also reading comments by Americans and others who don't want Afghani supporters of Allies to emigrate. I think also of the Afghanis I've met over the years. I shouldn't generalize, but the folks I've met have been so much nicer, genuine, interesting, and generally 'good', by contrast to many others I've met from neighbouring countries in the region, or other migrants in general. They're also not as belligerent as I am or as Westerners are, which is one reason the Taliban easily reclaimed territory. The loss of Marines and others is also sad. In any event, I am sorry I am so prickly today in this thread. I will not complain if I am banned.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The problem is that they've "manned up" for centuries source, at a cost of millions of lives, and in the past 30 years, hundreds of thousands of Afghanis died - directly or indirectly - from conflicts in Afghanistan. Could they have done more to expel the Taliban? Potentially, but the real answer is much more complicated.
