Russian DM Shoigu has released casualty figures for The Ukraine. He is claiming 61,207 Ukrainians killed and 49,368 wounded. Russian dead are claimed to be 5,937.

If these numbers are even remotely accurate, it is absolutely catastrophic for The Ukraine. Note, the numbers for Russia are only for the regular armed forces of the Russian Federation. It does NOT include losses among the Donbass militias, who up until now have doing a lot of the actual frontline fighting, nor does it include losses among auxiliary and mercenary forces like the Wagner group. Nonetheless, it seems quite likely that losses have been disproportionately heavy on the Ukrainian side compared to the Russian.

Highly unlikely, just like how Ukrainian government claims about 10k dead Ukrainians and 61k dead Russians is highly unlikely.

61k casualties is actually not that crazy if you include everyone in the contested areas (i.e. the breakaway republics militias, civilians there) as "Russian", although it may be somewhat exaggerated.

Ukraine has certainly had far higher casualty ratios though and 100k+ isn't infeasible either.

I'm willing to believe the Russians can hold their occupied territory, but no way are they at Wehrmacht levels of superiority. Ukraine still has a functioning airforce and they sunk a flagship. That's unheard of in a one sided war.

The problem facing the Russians isn't that they have taken alot of casualties (they haven't, from all that we know), its that they literally don't have enough troops to hold a continuous frontline. They are spread very thin on the ground.

The Ukrainians took 5 times as many casualties as the Russians did in their Izyum offensive, which the West trumpeted as a major victory. Alot of the soldiers involved in that operation were civilians with brief training; many of them were men in their 30s, which is not really a prime age for soldiers.
