I've never understood the "glassy eyes" description... do sober, healthy eyes exhibit more of a matte or eggshell finish? I would prefer my eyes look like glass, I think.

In general, when it is said that someone's eyes look glassy, it means that they have a listless or unfocused look that may lack luster, be shiny or glazed.
