Partly but also indulging in a mental illness is costly for the body so if you have other stresses to deal with the brains has to choose one or the other.

Sometimes this doesn't last which is why stressed people can suddenly seem to have a breakdown out of nowhere (often when things are actually easing up).

Most of them are. Depression, anxiety, ADD, these are not 'illnesses' so much as symptom of a rotten society that is inconsistent with the social needs human evolution has given us.

This isn't true, although some disorders are reported less frequently in non-Western countries. Many disorders are also reported less frequently among people of certain non-white races who do live in Western countries.
