I think you can send a request to the FBI and they have to tell you within a certain period of time if you are being investigated or not. However, if you weren't being investigated before you sent the request, you probably will be on their radar after they receive your request.

I have a friend who's son was scouting filming locations in New York City a few years after 9/11. He was in film school and was taking video of a bridge. My friend was paid a visit by two local FBI agents because someone wrote his license plate down. The car was registered in my friend's name. He was on a list for years afterwards.

My way was to enter Canada on business back in 2015. Short trip 3 days to Vancouver BC. At entry after leaving plane I went to Passport check and was directed to large office barren empty except for chairs. Then the interrogation commenced lasted about 2 hours asking everything from my birth to date and I essentially told coppers nothing but fuck right off. I kept asking same question over and over "why are you holding and interrogating me" and finally twit bitch copper slapped my Passport in her hand and said "our government has no interest in you but your government sure does". As a patch holder to a 1% I was not at all surprised. I told them repeatedly "as a US Citizen with no warrants from anyone on the planet either release me out of your country or in make up your minds". Wound up they released me into their country with warnings I would be tracked and watched. So the fuck what I was not in Canada to do any crime. Just business.
