I have always hated Twitter, it is inane social media. A site that allows fewer characters in my post than Saidit allows in the title, is clearly not made for talking about anything real or in depth. You can share cute little slogans about shit, like yay Ukraine, or yay Vaccines, but this medium is not suitable for seriously addressing complex issues, and this is by design. Don't think too much, get your opinions from controlled snippets.

Frankly I'm not sure why Elon acquired Twitter - What is the lifespan of a social media site before it gets replaced by a similar platform with a new design? My Space, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Tik Tok. These things do not look the best long-term investments, as the barrier to making a competing social media site are really not that high

I was trying to reply to a comment and I kept hitting post but nothing was happening. Then I noticed a red -17 next to the button. My first thought was I had been banned for 17 days and it was going to count upwards until I was unbanned. I googled it. Lol, didn't realize it was just telling me my comment was too long for twits.

Also Saidit is focused on topics of discussion while Twitter is focused on personalities. So generally everything on Twitter is either clicking the like button or leaving a hateful comment.

Yes following people rather than topics is another thing I really don't like

The entire design of Twitter brings out the worst in people. Tribalism and hatred are promoted and thoughtful discussions are ignored. Sad to say, but maybe that's why Twitter is so much more popular than Saidit.

You're right, but that's only part of the explanation. Don't forget, Google and the media giants decide who succeeds. It's impossible for most people to discover saidit, whereas Twitter and reddit are on every page of the mainstream web.

Why did he buy Twitter?: To control information that can benefit the .001%, to develop the 'market' for that information. No other reason. A smart move by him. Very bad for the rest of us.

I agree that purchasing Twitter gave him a great deal of power over discourse now. My point was more that these platforms only seem to be able to maintain market dominance for a few years at best, as a new gimmick will soon displace it, so 44B for a couple years of sway seems like a really steep price

Alrighty - his current networth is $186 B, and 10 years ago it was $10 B (or less). In 2 years his net worh will likely be well over $210 B, thanks especially to controlling information, IMO.

So you got blocked by Elon and now you're mad?

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun -  (5 children)

I don’t know if I’m mad. I just want to @ famous people and call them the n word.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Why? Literally anyone could do that.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

You get banned if you do that.

There is no real free speech. One could argue that there never was but its absence has been reinforced by hate speech laws and the weaponizing of language by those with political agendas. We have been divided against ourselves by soulless demagogues and one of the principle casualties is the ability to express ourselves.

Yup. I have been telling people this even before he bought Twitter. Elon Musk doesn't support free speech at all, it's all just rhetoric.

He says "Freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach." Semantic games.
