But other than that you had a nice time?

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (8 children)

Yeah, it was alright actually. Bought a souvenir Phantom of the Opera mask, drank a lot of fairly decent champagne, a lot of nice food. People just suck.

That's good. I'm avoiding town myself in case I get aloo snackbar'd.

I just ate an entire newspaper

Did you at least finish the crossword first?

[–]DELINQUENTFELON 2 insightful - 4 fun2 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

I'll do the crossword after I poop it out

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Mm. I'm in the area several times a year, I try not to let trigger happy religious nutjobs put me off.

[–]jet199Instigatrix 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, I was in London on 7/7 and know people who were on the trains so I'm a little bit more risk adverse.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Hm. I've narrowly avoided various Muslim events, stayed just a street away from the Bataclan attack in Paris, and left Brussels days before the metro explosion. Idiots won't stop me from living my life, I'll just moan about it instead.

[–]jet199Instigatrix 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, I normally wouldn't but I don't want to give my money to woke arts idiots who hate me and would happily see me ethnically cleansed for the sake of diversity either.

The local culture in London has become a cesspit of human overpopulation and lack of respect. People climb over monuments and litter on the street, they dress like the homeless and are rude to staff in local eateries.

Just read up a bit on Elizabethan culture. The English have always been smelly pieces of shit, crammed into small spaces like sardines.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

It hasn't always been as bad as this. There have been times in history when people were better dressed, well spoken, and not fighting to walk down a street through 2000 people in 100 meters, many of whom are shoving food in their fat faces. The population of London is about 8million, there are up to 30million tourists per year. It's unsustainable to opate any major tourist hotspot without significant impact on the local community.

Even just back to the 90's, it was a better place than it is now.

There have been times in history where the royalty and the nobility were well-dressed and well-spoken. The rest of you Londoners were crammed into filthy hovels, covered in lice, and dying of the plague. They dumped your bodies into mass graves and forgot your names.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I think all shit cities did that. Paris threw them in catacombs.

[–]jet199Instigatrix 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Even when people were living in hovels they generally wore smart clothes in public and dressed up to go out.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Even when I was a kid, people would dress up nice to go to town, or to fly, or do anything more than go to the supermarket. People have lowered the tone to the point that it's better to stay home. I recently saw a guy take his partner to a restaurant in his work hi-vis waistcoat, this sort of thing ruins the experience for everyone else.

[–]Musky 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I think that has to do with the nature of the clothing at the time. It wasn't mass produced. People didn't own extensive wardrobes. They were wearing their best bespoke clothing because it's all they had.

And you didn't just throw away an old shirt or pants. There are parts of modern clothing that are basically just decoration these days but hems, collars, and cuffs are high wear areas designed to be able to be replaced. I wouldn't be surprised if the front pocket actually originated as a patch job.

People did that because they had to. Now they don't when we have Vietnamese child laborers sewing up $20 Walmart outfits.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

It can cost less to dress smart than in a chavs uniform. Knowingly and proudly entering a venue which has a smart/smart casual dress policy wearing Nike trainers, tracksuit bottoms and a sports top carrying a Vans backpack doesn't quite count as merely wearing the clothing of the day. There were times when people would do their best, people hardly even try any more and it's sheer self entitled rudeness.

Ah, the tourist "industry." I wager the use of "industry" for things like that help cover up the removal of actual industry that, you know, produces something.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Very possible. Also makes use of a generation incapable of contributing to actual industry as their only skill is liking photos on social media.

It has to do with fighting on the wrong side in WWII.

It's a direct reflection of one's self respect, and respect for others. Because Narcissism is rampant due to internet culture. Also, it's insecurity as well. I had a guy tell me once that the Harrahs Buffet in Vegas was better than the Bachannal at Ceasars. He was raving about it. This was literally blue and yellow slop versus well cooked and decent cuisine from all over the world. But because he was inherently uncomfortable in a nicer place with a cultured attitude, he disliked the food. It's all part of it.

I just had dinner a few weeks ago at the Keg Mansion in Toronto on vacation and there were guys in hoodies at the bar, if I owned the place they wouldn't even be let in. This was a $150 a plate meal.

I won't even leave my house in the middle of a project in work clothes to go to Home Depot without changing first.

I hear you. It's mega frustrating, but there will always be a segment of people that care about themselves enough to act accordingly. Fuck the rest of the uncultured swine.

Carl's Jr will be on your shirt in 30 years. Idiocracy is a real thing.

These parasites could have seen a shitty photo in a book or online, but they chose to attend in person and take a photo themselves without taking note of the careful brush strokes

Bang on, I was at the Tower of London watching hordes of people taking photos. What I noticed most was that they had to be in every shot. I watched a 20 something go from place to place, turn and take a selfie with every object! EVERY ONE! He must have snapped like 30 -40 photos in the time I was watching him. What a loser!

I take an absolute minimum of photos when I travel. Before I take a shot I ask myself "Can't I find a photo of this item/scenery on google?" Unless I think it's an exceptional, unique shot I spend my time enjoying the moment not thinking about who will see my (boring to them) photos. It's disgusting to watch this narcist behavior.

only to have tourists who decided to arrive in trainers and polo shirts, spending the entire time on their phones while ordering shitty Budweiser's.

My god man, I put on a clean, rip free pair of black jeans and a button down shirt and people everywhere are like "Wow Mr.Fancy pants! Why so dressed up?" Like really??? I guess I also brushed my hair and my teeth too! I can't believe this passes for fancy!

I hear your frustration.

Wait did you just say textures of the oils? AMERICA GUNNA INVAAAAAAADE.

Well most tourists are retarded and that's just how they are and how they were, depends though, what tourists are they, Asian, European, 'Muhrican? Worst by far I believe are Asians and American ones.

Welcome to 2023 where nobody gives a damnnnnnnnn!

America doesn't invade because of oil. That's a leftist fantasy. They invade because America is run by Jews. Their invasions benefit Israel.

These parasites could have seen a shitty photo in a book or online, but they chose to attend in person and take a photo themselves without taking note of the careful brush strokes, the textures of the oils, the vibrancy of the colours.

Uncultured cunts. Everyone know you need to lick the paintings to feel the taste. Smell the statues to enjoy their stench. And touch the plaques to understand what is it like to get the same disease as the past visitors. I myself tried to get intimate with the Mona Lisa once, but there was a glass in the way, and then two guards threw me out the museum. Because the guards are uncultured cunts.

Have you ever heard of "the ugly American"? This is far from a new phenomenon.

When I visited the British museum I was shocked to see visitors posing on and letting their children climb all over antiquities, ancient statues. That wouldn't be allowed in an American museum but apparently anything goes in Britain.

[–]Drewski 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You're being melodramatic, culture isn't dead. There's always going to be a few idiots around, you've just got to let it go and enjoy things regardless. If someone wants to take a selfie with everything, let them. Don't let it ruin your own experience.

I would argue that Chinese tourists are the worst; loud, rude, taking pictures in inappropriate places, not following rules and cutting in lines. I'd put Russians and Israelis second, they're often really cool talking to them by themselves but you get a group of them together, especially drinking, and they can be extremely obnoxious. I'm not giving Americans a pass, we can be stereotypically loud and clueless, but we're far from the worst. I guess it's a matter of opinion though and one bad experience can sour you to a whole nationality.

That said, you want to go somewhere where people are way more polite and respectful, go to Japan. Not only are they respectful of others but they have more self respect, and don't dress like slobs or make a fool of themselves in public. Tokyo is a huge city, but very clean and you won't get harassed like many other places.

I had a similar experience at an archeology muesum at a major state university in America. The way people casually walked by without any awe for what was surrounding them was utterly gobsmacking.

[–]QueenBread 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think it's always been like that. One person appreciates art or science, for each fifty people that don't. The difference is that there are some periods in time where the fifty people who don't understand art will pretend they do because it's the trendy thing to do at the time. But, in moments like this when culture isn't valued, those people go mask off.

We're living in the world of Nietzsche's last man.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No we're not. Human behavior has been shit for centuries and millennia, just in different ways.
