Christianity (and associated cultural practices) always had flaws. One particular flaw in the economics of monogamous European Christian societies was that many women exercised only informal power and laws were codified to prevent women from taking formal social and economic power. Initially, perhaps around the late Middle Ages, this was not a problem, because women's labor was necessary to the survival of households, and (in part due to sexual repression) women had high levels of informal social power. Every European man, from the churls to the kings, needed to wear clothes, and a huge amount of clothing production was done by unpaid women in their homes. However, when industrial advances eroded the importance of women's unpaid work at home, women began to become increasingly frustrated with their lack of economic power. Meanwhile, most children were raised within homes to be apprentice farmers; children were underpowered workers, not consumers.
As long as the Christian ethics of marriage were respected and children were regarded as assets, monogamous marriage was the foundation of social relationships. Industrialization contributed to the undermining of Christian monogamous households, particularly because children were no longer apprentice farmhands, but rather useless consumers or underpowered factory workers. When mass production led to consumerism and children were educated in government indoctrination centers masquerading as schools, Christian marriage was deeply threatened. The killing blow came with 20th-century feminism, which exhorted women to stop following the dogmas of Christian priests, and to instead follow the dogmas of Jewish feminists. In the twinkling of an eye, women were persuaded that smoking cigarettes in public was a form of "liberation." When war production needed women to work in factories, capitalists realized that female workers would increase corporate profits and undermine Christian resistance to capitalism. Hormonal birth control and legalized abortion were crucial steps in the Gramscian march through the institutions. The final two nails in the coffin were no-fault divorce and a judicial culture of maximizing state power by oppressing divorced men. Punitive alimony and biased allocation of child custody to ex-wives were just two tactics designed to break up the family unit for the benefit of the powerful social classes -- government officials and ultra-wealthy plutocrats.
Currently Western countries have a massive sexual divide in political preferences. Unmarried women and a few sexual perverts in government office favor ultra-leftist policies that would have been unthinkable just fifty years ago. Married women and most men have drifted to the political right. The pendulum has swung unsustainably far to the left. The pendulum will eventually move to the right, but there is no guarantee that core social institutions will survive the re-adjustment. In particular, the military is of high importance. It is not likely that Western militaries will function without traditional, patriarchal men in positions of authority.
