I’ve literally never seen any of this terf vs queer drama IRL. It’s entirely online...

Someone said this and I always wonder where people are able to totally avoid the queer bullshit in real life. I'm not a very social person, I'm not in any way active in the LGBT community, yet I and my girlfriend have been exposed to the "fuck TERFs" and "cis lesbians are shit" and "hearts not parts" rhetoric from people we know. We drive down town and what was supposed to be murals for the black community has way too many trans ones to ignore. We don't go to anything LGB related because we learned quickly it's overrun by trans and every combination of straight queer you can imagine.

It's of course not an every day occurrence but it's there.

Here in Brazil Big Brother is airing, and it's hugely popular. Some of the contestants are social media activists, and they do the same thing inside the show as people do on Twitter, bullying and harassing other contestants. Twitter users are hating the harassers, but I find it hypocritical since the same people do the same thing on social media.

People don't fully separate their online personas from real life. Of course, exceptions exist. Someone might be super liberal online but then live in a very conservative town, so they keep this liberal persona only to the internet.

I think things can be more comfortable if you already have a partner and a close circle of friends, so you can avoid other "LGBT" groups in real life. But for us who are looking for dates/friends the situation is different.

Yes, making friends. I don't know how I will ever make friends who aren't straight. Like people mentioned in the reddit thread, it's easier to find similarities and friendship with straight people than those in the community anymore.

The unfortunate truth.

As a black Southerner, I never hear black people talking about this shit irl. I see black libfems online but never encounter them in person. Never heard "trans women are women" irl.

I've been hanging out with liberal cishet people a lot in the past years because they accept me more. Since they're also monosexual they understand my sexuality in a way that not everyone in the queer community does right now. I'm not attracted to someone's gender, but to their sex/visible sexual characteristics, and all the cishets I know are the same.

It's refreshing to read this type of comment on Reddit. This seems like a good sub, or at least the thread got good replies. I feel like there are no subs like this for gay men right now.

This sub is still welcoming of "transbians" though. It's more the last-refuge of a few lesbians on reddit than anything else, sadly. :/

I noticed that, but the replies of this thread at least seem to be supportive towards actual lesbians.

As for gay men most subs are already on the side of "obviously gay men wanna have sex with transmen". The notable exception is AskGaybros. But frankly that's pretty much the only good part about AGB, I wouldn't go there expecting a mature conversation with friendly people.

Actuallylesbian is not nearly as awful as actuallesbians. I think the mods removed a post about "genital preferences" with the first sentence being "some lesbians like dick" or something like that.

This comment:

Honestly all this stuff is said online, it doesn't mean anything in the long run. Just chill, like what you like and ignore the silliness.

This sounds nice and all, and might be true in some areas, but people have been fired for liking tweets, fired for expressing discomfort at gender neutral bathrooms, doxxed for things they say online even slightly critical of trans bs, etc. OP seems to understand that, since she made sure to express her support of trans people and didn't want to be 'polarizing' or 'divisive' with her post. Sad she has to tiptoe around her true feelings.

Sigh, I saw that post yesterday. I like that that sub exists, and that the comments are mostly sane, but man, I'm wondering where all these people are living that all this "online" rhetoric isn't bleeding into their everyday lives. Like it or not, modern society doesn't have many boundaries between the online world and the "real" world, especially for those of us on the younger side. I agree with the commenters that most of the rhetoric originated online--that's a big part of the problem--but the cat is certainly out of the bag now.

Wow-- in so many cases, it's as if they walked right up to an open door, then turned right around and went back, all the while complaining there was nowhere else to go.

What a refreshing sub. I'm surprised it's still even on Reddit. It might get removed for the name, which is too similiar to the other one.
