Removing under rules 2 and 3. This is better suited for s/GenderCritical or s/ThereAreTwoGenders.

Some people are starting to reclaim it as a male beer gut lol.

It was inevitable that such would happen.

The original proposal dates back to 2019. For the nerds in the audience, here it is: https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2020/20190r-swollen-belly-emoji.pdf

Choice quote:

One’s sex does not dictate the capacity to care for children in the home or work in the market. In the same way sex equality law has aimed combat harmful sex stereotypes, there are a great deal of parallels regarding how one’s sex does not dictate the capacity to cary children.

This is not a new phenomenon. Pregnancy has been indiscriminate of gender throughout history but it is only now being formally recognized. The British Medical Association’s (BMA’s) advises to use ‘pregnant people’ instead of the stereotype term ‘pregnant woman’. And, although ‘a large majority of people who have been pregnant or have given birth identify as women’, there are intersex men and transmen who get pregnant.

Jessica Clarke, a law professor at Harvard University, suggests that, ‘law could see pregnancy not as something that only happens to women’s bodies, but also as a bodily condition experienced by people who do not identify as women’.

Interestingly, the proposal does acknowledge this emoji can be used for things like being full after eating Chipotle.

It was inevitable that Apple would add it. It was already part of the Unicode standard. Google already supports it, for instance.

Yeah and it's very alarming that those huge compagnies support that ideology

They support whatever gives them more money. If there's more money to be had by pandering, they'll pander. Just as everything turns rainbow in June. The only ideology they have is cash

This is the same Unicode Consortium where a single guy threw a fit and shot down the proposal to add more faces to the poop emoji because he thought it was too crass.

The fact that a handful of people have so much power over the tools that people use to communicate is so disturbing.

My dream of a crying vomiting devil poop emoji will never come to fruition because of monsters like this.

To be perfectly frank, this doesn't wig me out as much as the "Mx. Claus" emoji. For the most part, the "gender" of emoji really just manifests itself as short, medium, or long hair. The "bearded lady" emoji 🧔‍♀️ just ends up looking like Jesus, not a sideshow attraction. And the "pregnant man" emoji just ends up reading as a pregnant lady with short hair: 🫃

"Mx. Claus" on the other hand? 🧑‍🎄 That's straight up a fictional character made-up by Unicode. That's not how standards are supposed to work, they're supposed to describe the world, not define it

Maybe it's one of these people.

Eh, this one I don't mind so much, yes, it's stupid gender jankery, but it's also just screwing around with computer code. It's not much different than XKCD's "vomiting rocket ship" comic. We have more important things to fight back against than some emojis that will probably get even less use than the mailbox emoji and the saxophone emoji.

How is random reddit posts more important to fight against than apple placing emojis that states that men can be pregnant xD
