I like that at the end of the article, they say "Editor's note: Facebook is among NPR's financial supporters."

Lines are hardening fast, and it is quite clear to all who is on which side.

Apps are overrated, and 9 times out of 10, just useless distractions to your day. A phone is a great tool but when it becomes a must hold in my pocket obsession you have already lost the battle for control of your life. I challenge any phone junkie to turn their off for 24 hours.

I challenge any phone junkie to turn their off for 24 hours.

Funny you should mention this. I decided four days ago (Jan 5th) to do just that. I have had my phone on only when I needed to make a call since then, and once when my wife asked me to in order to get hold of me if she needed to. I wouldn't classify myself as a phone Junkie though. I didn't do it because of apps though. I did it because I'm sick of Google tracking my life 24 hours a day. I decided enough, and keep my phone off now. It was WAY easier than I thought it was going to be. Your phone needs you more than you need it, and I decided I was going to change that. I lived just fine for 30 years without a cell phone, I think I'll do just fine again. *edited to put date in

They are an insidious technology alright, mine's locked down as far as overt tracking goes but I never have it on when I'm on the road. As for apps, I call them craps, they might shave 30 seconds off ordering a pizza or allow me to remotely operate my camera but I can live without that. Fuck All Apps!

I see you're mature like me. I lived through the beeper/pager era, they has txt back then even, though you had to call through a message and girls (they were all girls) in the control room would type it out and send it to you. then came the gen-1 pack phones and all the way up to these smartphones. Nice tech but somewhere along the way it went from being my phone to being 'someone else's' phone. But everything in the world has turned to shit in the last 30~40 years.

The average millennial has no idea what it's like to buy a quality tool or a quality tent or BBQ, you can still get them but you'll pay the appropriate inflation adjusted price from the 1980's. Everyone buys the cheap crap, cheap furniture that wobbles and eventually breaks, the only thing that has maintained quality at the base price end is cars I think. But not american or euro cars, I'm talking Japanese cars lol. rant/

Agreed! We live in a throw-away society anymore. Companies build stuff just good enough to make it through the warranty period and maybe a bit longer. Then you throw it away and buy another one. People used to get TVs fixed, quality boots and shoes resoled, appliances repaired, Not any more though, Throw it out and buy new. A big part of the blame (most of it, actually) lies with the companies that make the crap. They build it like crap on purpose, fully knowing you'll throw it away and but more, in their quest for the almighty dollar! Speaking of quality tools, I was fortunate enough to buy a nice set of Snap On tools and a top and bottom tool box (Napa, to save a few bucks) when I went to a tech school for aviation maintenance. That was 1991, and I still have all if it, and it all still works, and it is all still in great condition. 30 years old, and I'm sure it will last for another 30. They certainly don't build stuff like that anymore!

Today, the media are playing the same role the church used to play during the dark ages, in obstructing any scientific and civilizatory progress. They are the force of evil, unifying all human vices in them: addiction, laziness, greed, hatred, stupidity. The media are the diagonal opposite of science. They live off of dramatization, simplification, polarization, and outright lies when it serves their narrative. They feed the addiction of a spoiled and bored people for entertainment.

Of course theyre always trying to accuse you of what they themselves are doing to you. But there is a very simple and distinct criterion to tell good from evil, truth from lies, justice from tyranny: censorship. Never once in human history has silencing others been a tool to protect truth, justice, and the good. So whenever some lefty tries to blame you of being what they themselves are: there is your win-all argument. Censorship. They will try to weasel out of it by word games of course, saying it isnt censorship, or that it is legal. But it doesnt matter how you call silencing others or by which means it is done, or if it's legal or not. It's totally irrelevant.

That's so true, most humans are idiots 😔

I'm neither a righty nor a lefty, because the left did/do so many problematic things too. Your comment is very well written, thank you for sharing this.

And end users can also flex their power by abandoning those platforms. Which Trump avoided to do.

[–]awdrifter[S] 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

You'll never get enough of the sheeps to abandon those platforms. Just look at how many people are still using Reddit after the great purge rather than switch to Saidit.

Can I just say for a moment, That I love watching you alt-right snakes turn on each other like rats in a sewer that have run out of shit to eat?

Can I just say how delicious your tears are? Watching you be betrayed by your own "Would Be GOD Emperor". It is what your evil deserves. Not only that, but to see you double down on it - begging for more punishment, telling yourselves lie after lie after lie - so that you MIGHT whip up enough courage in yourselves to give it one last push in a few more days. Its pathetic and it is sad. Must make you shiver to think that your evil bullshit has come knockin' at the door to hand you a cold plate of Karma.

Watchin you people turn on your own, I think is the most beautiful part. I love knowing that any one of you that has the BALLS to actually DO ANYTHING - Will be labeled Antifa after the fact. You turn on your heroes that actually have the balls to make a statement and make them your boogy men - because that is what cowards do - and all of you are cowards to the last. Your tears and frustration bring me such joy. It Shows the true colors of the Alt-Right. Rue it you Nazi Fucks. Reap it and waller in it like the pigs you fucking are.

This is why Fascism constantly fails. It never stands together in the face of adversity - because each fascist is an island that is only worried about protecting itself - Because Evil cant ever trust Evil. So fuck you and your conspiracies and your wicked bullshit. Ill be drinking your tears as you rip yourselves apart on the evening news.

I got like one paragraph in on this comment before I stopped reading because you’re just repeating the same cringe.

Your idea of someone who voted Trump is a child’s level straw man that exists in your head. No different from actual neo nazis who think everyone who disagrees with them is a jewish shill.

Oh cool, Trump scapegoating his base because he is a Zionist hack and then the neocons split and become democrats again but also populists on the right. Who would have thunk it!

I really don't know why Trump (or someone on his staff) didn't see this coming and prepare for it. They really should have had a presence on other platforms.

        [–]madcow-5 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Same. A lot of people are shaking their heads over that right now. He didn’t even need to switch platforms. He’s the president, and he’s rich, he could have had people build his own platform to act as his megaphone. The president shouldn’t be dependent on any third party company in this way.

        [–]FediNetizen 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If his team had made their own Fediverse instance it would have become bigger than Gab overnight, and they wouldn't have been beholden to anyone. It's not too late, honestly.
