Certainly, Chipit. My apologies, my comment is horribly reactionary. First -the article:

The main problem is the assumption in the headline:

Liberal democracies by definition regulate abuses like this. The digital control of so much of our lives will be used by those who reduce regulation, in order to horde wealth, and historically that happens with right-wing parties. Liberal democracies historically limit the abuses of the wealthy, in favor of the 99%. The author does not show how this new digital world will be abused by so-called Liberalism. Instead he focuses on Trudeau as one of these abusers, as if to critique Liberalism in the same breath. The problem is: this problem of controlling cash flow is as old as federal reserves, and somewhat older. Even with recent digital changes, nothing really changes. Authoritarians will continue to try to abuse the system by deregulating it. Liberal democracy will be the only way to challenge these abuses.

    You might be thinking of neoliberalism, which is relatively new. Liberal democratic statecraft dates back to the Enlightenment, and if the basis of the US constitution. Look at the trends in progressions toward plutocracy, dating back to 1776, or dating back to the 19th century, or back to WWII, or back to 1960. In all these cases, the anti-democracy authoritarians led the way. What starts out as a "liberal" democratic republic inevitably declines with the rise of the authoritarians. See also Spengler's 'The Decline of the West'. Any criticisms you have of the democratic process have been promoted by these authoritarians. And as we see with Putin's latest, the authoritarians are winning. Your agency in your country's success is now a small fraction of your father's agency.

    The essential fact of liberalism is based on the individual. Moreover, the individual has rights, especially inalienable rights, and the state exists to protect and/or enhance rights.
