Gonna try to take a break from most public social media for the next couple weeks starting tomorrow for life's due diligence. Can't be too ambitious with the goal. Will most likely relapse into some random internet arguments about nothing..

Man, I always think of multiple off-topic questions to ask you guys during the week and then on Sunday, I can never remember them.

Do you carry a phone around much? If so, maybe you can use a notes app to quickly jot down random ideas in shorthand(a few words) until you can get to thinking about it later on.

I actually do that all the time! The trouble is that I don't currently have a centralized place for all my "random thoughts" haha, I usually write them in whichever note I currently have open for that day. And then I forget which day I wrote the random thoughts on and don't go back to look. Maybe I'll start a Google doc or something for Sunday questions, lol. I appreciate the suggestion, haha.

Do any of you non-mod people ever check the mod log? I've noticed something interesting lately, which is a bunch of reported (and later approved) comments that not only don't break any rules but also are in no way controversial or offensive to anyone in the LGBdroptheT camp. I'm talking about comments like this, this, this and this. It's by no means a majority of the reports but those examples are just a few. I can't be sure, but I think the TRAs who hate-read us are reporting things, and if so I find that fucking hilarious. Don't they know this isn't reddit?

We have AutoMod set up in this sub, like we did on Reddit.

I don't mind sharing this particular bit of our AutoMod config ... we have several rules that will report comments and/or posts due to using certain words, so mods review and make sure it's genuine users and NOT TRAs harassing us.

Most of those comments triggered an automatic report due to using the word "TERF". The longer paragraph by "yousaythosethings" was triggered due to a full phrase that we put in as anti-brigading measures. Your comment actually got triggered because of "terf" as well, because it's in the URL of one of your hyperlinks, LOL

The majority of what we set up hasn't been needed as much as we needed it on Reddit, because the majority of people on SaidIt are mature adults who know how to stay in their own lane and not target others just because they disagree. We keep the AutoMod rules going in so that in the future, as we and the site grows, if it becomes more like Reddit then we're already accustomed to doing the work.

Omg! You know, that possibility occurred to me but I thought all automod comment removals also showed up in the mod log and I didn't see any associated with the comments that I linked. Anyway, thanks for the intel.

AutoMod doesn't remove items by defaults, you have to tell it what to do (approve, remove, report, filter, and spam).

AutoMod doesn't leave an entry in the log if all it's doing is reporting. Because in that event, reporting a comment or post, it's acting like a user not a mod. The report reasons are customizable though (similar to a custom text entry), so us mods can see why it was reported and then approve/remove as-needed.

Using TERF as an example ...

We don't want to automatically remove a comment every time someone says "terf". That would be like half our comments, LOL, and it would be a graveyard in every comment section until mods get online. So we report the comments instead, so we can double-check the way the word is being used isn't negative towards users.

But we do remove posts that say "terf", which is a hang-over from Reddit. Most of the time, a user saying "terf" in a post was using it derogatorily towards us ("fuck you TERF, TERFs need to die", etc etc". So we do have AutoMod remove those and also report the posts to us so we can make sure we're not being brigaded.

99% of the time, what we're doing with TERF is overkill. But we'd rather stay in the practice than be caught unaware.

Awesome info, thanks again for explaining things.
