This just in: Switzerland legalised gay marriage and adoption rights.

We had a referendum in our country back in May 2015 on the subject. We were the first country legalise same sex marriage by popular vote. 62.07% voted yes, which is only slightly lower than Switzerland's result. Much like in Switzerland, there were concerns in Ireland about same sex parenting, even though same sex adoption was legalised two months before the gay marriage referendum was held. But unlike Switzerland, where the focus was on lesbian couples accessing IVF treatment because the children would not know who their fathers are until they turn 18, in Ireland, the focus was on surrogacy. In Ireland, there was no law allowing or prohibiting surrogacy, but the lack of regulation meant that a lot of Irish people who become parents through surrogacy went to Ukraine, India, Mexico and the USA. There were concerns that if gay marriage was legalised, male-male couples would go to America or Ukraine, have kids through surrogacy, take those kids back to Ireland and those kids would potentially have no way of finding out who their genetic mothers are. On top of all of the ethical concerns about surrogacy. While I sympathised with the surrogacy concerns, being against surrogacy myself, I voted yes. Nowadays gay marriage is not talked about anymore. But the surrogacy debate is still ongoing. Recently, the government banned commercial surrogacy, but is still unsure whether or not to legalise or outlaw altruistic surrogacy. Hopefully they will outlaw it completely. I hear that all forms of surrogacy are banned in Switzerland, which is based.

I still think is immoral to have a majority deciding if the minority can get equal rights.

That’s the way things work in Switzerland. Hence why I’m against direct democracy.

In Switzerland women got the right to vote super late and only because men gave them permission through referendum. Before that they had been denied multiple times by males voters. It's absurd.

This is why decisions should be decided by legislators, not voters. Most people are easily influenced by the media and don’t bother do research on certain issues before voting on these issues. Most people don’t even read the constitutions of their own countries.

To be honest, I’m against universal suffrage, but it shouldn’t be based on sex. I believe that in order to be eligible to vote, a person should be over 30, a net contributor to the economy, not be a duel citizen, and pass two exams by at least 60%, one on history and the other on the constitution. Whether that person is male or female shouldn’t matter. But I don’t agree with people who don’t understand their country’s legal system voting in elections or referendums. Though in my opinion, referendums should be non-binding.

Well the far right in Australia forced a referendum on the issue, having convinced themselves they would win, and were completely humiliated.

If anything, it was a good way to figure out who of my family and family friends won't be invited to my future wedding because they voted no.

I am, however, confused by his translation of one of the anti-same-sex marriage billboards. Don’t “Kinder mit einem toten” and “enfants avec un mort” translate to “children with a death?” Why is he saying “children without a father?”

Un mort is a dead male. Children with a dead male. I think you're meant to make the connection to father from there. My french is a very rusty though.

I suppose that still makes more sense, but it’s still not completely coherent. Absolutely no one dies when lesbian couples have children. The sperm donor just agrees to provide a necessary component and never talk to anyone again.

He said "Children with one dead", as in there is no mother or father in a same-sex couple. Metaphorically, the lack of the mother or the father means one of them is dead.
